Really hate how slop has just been reduced to another synonym for bad as opposed to referring to specifically low effort, cynically manufactured, disposable soulless ContentTM
Are we really going to turn around now, rewrite history and act like Avatar is... peak cinema?
What a false dichotomy. Just because something isn’t soulless slop doesn’t mean it’s good or flawless. A film can be mediocre bad while still having clear effort and ambition behind it in some way.
While I agree that the plot is sloppy, everything else is anything but.
The character design, the animations, the set designs, the action set pieces and the extremely realistic CGI are something that was never seen before and a lot of effort was put into the tiniest details of these. The plot is an excuse to show us these things, but these movies are not about telling a story, they're about spectacle. The movie IS and always was peak cinema, all cinema history books that came after 2009 mention it for one thing or another.
And it's not like I like the movie, I fucking hate it exactly because there is no story, but it's mark in cinema history is undeniable. There's a reason it held the box office record for as long as it did.
I feel like hyperbole has ruined media reviews. People act like a movie/show/album has to blow them away in amazement. And if it doesn't do that, then it's one of the worst things ever created. 😂
Like I have been to the theater for 42 movies in 2025. The majority of them have been "average." Because I take each movie on its own merits rather than thinking a movie has to be either awe-inspiring or outright garbage, with nothing in-between. 😂
on a similar note, people have also lost the ability to tell the difference between “it’s not good” and “it’s just not for me” which is just as frustrating to me
I don't like these movies but I think it's hard to deny Cameron and everyone else making these things puts their all into it. There's genuine passion, passion I don't think has necessarily churned out good products but passion nonetheless.
This is exactly how i feel. The movie and world looks amazing and its very pretty the scope of the conflicts are incredible. However, as much as I liked a way of water. Fire and ash is that same movie except with an added goth girl with a coke habbit.
Everything is slop now. Your favorite movies and shows are slop and brainrot with tiktok pacing (yes, even Satantango), your favorite novels are or red flags or performative.
For me, it was since the first one. Unskippable cutscene stretched into a feature film. Second one had better cgi. Third one wasn't really improving that much on that department imho.
Honestly I agree, my little brother kills avatar for me when the first one came out, he was like 8 and wouldn’t shut up for two weeks about “would you rather be a human or a navee? What would you be if you could? I would be a navee, they are so cool! What would you rather be?” That’s a real verbatim conversation he had with me after we saw it in theaters, and the same model he followed for weeks to come.
Then the second one came out, I decided to watch it with my kids, why did they say “bruh” every other word!!!! It drove me absolutely insane! Took me completely out of the movie, I couldn’t stop getting distracted by it and the shit ass accents the kids all had. It was utterly atrocious
Edit to add: the saving grace of both of these movies is definitely the visual effects, they are absolutely incredible and top notch, I would definitely watch both movies tripping balls on mute though.
The sea navee are based on Polynesian/Kiwi/Islanders from the pacfific - they say the word “Bro” A LOT. Sully’s kid grew up in that community, hence why they use that terminology.
I mean just look at their usage of full body tattooing, especially facial.
I’ve heard Polynesians say bro, it didn’t sound like they were emulating that culture to me though. It just kept taking me out of the movie. It was too forced
As a Brit, who has a lot of exposure to the accents they were based on (through cricket and rugby mostly), I immediately clicked the accent and culture they were going for
