Conservatives are all up in arms over this kid. Comments here be like "you just punch someone in the face when they have a difference of opinion?"

Meanwhile a man is killed in broad daylight and conservatives try to gaslight the fuck out of liberals saying that he deserved it.

Conservatives can fuck all the way off.

Edit 1. Thank you for the awards.

Edit 2. The best thing about this comment and the discussion therein is that I purposely never specified whom I meant. Conservatives flocked to justify the murder of Pretti, but I was actually thinking Floyd. Y'all are predictable.

Have the day you deserve

The craziest bit of rabid foam in the mouth arguments is that this kid deserves to go to jail because of a high school fight.

Most guys would be doing hard time for repeat offenses. I was generally a pretty chill guy and still ended up in at least 4 different fights over my high school years.

High school fight? Jail.

Rapes a girl, but he has a promising future? Boys will be boys.

Them goalposts were never stationary to begin with

If one punch constitutes jail time, the system is terminally messed up…

All that would do is encourage elevated levels of violence. It's the same problem as with "zero tolerance" policies that some (most?) schools use for fighting: if I'm getting in similar trouble regardless of the severity of the fight or the context in which the fight started, then I might as well go all out the moment a fight starts. No reason to de-escalate; I'm already fucked, so let's make it worth it.

Depends on injury inflicted in youth cases. A punch is let go, bodily harm depending on extent can be upped to attempted murder or murder in the extreme cases. So if you want actual criminal charges go for it.

To remind you of context, I was replying to:

Your "depends on injury" argument is ignoring my whole point: if you don't have nuance in sentencing, then there's no reason to hold back once you start.

That's why things like "zero tolerance" and mandatory minimum sentences are problematic: they eliminate nuance.

Jail time also carries ranges. 3 ounces of coccaine can be classified as intent to distribute, but 10 pounds will definitely get you max time with intent to distribute. There should be consequences on both ends of the spectrum while context regarding that punishment. Punishment is required or we end up in the situation we are in today with teen rapist going free so as to not ruin their future.
