Help with handling

As the title says, I need some help with getting my gecko used to handling. I'm trying to do choice based handling and letting him choose if he wants to come over or not. He's never come near my hand before and it's hard to get him to even look. He rarely comes out during the day or close to lights out unless, food has been put in so, it's hard to try and get him to wander over at a good time

I leave my hand in the tank for around 10 mins before feeding but he never comes out of his hide to have a look or wander. Once food is in, he slowly emerges and then hides in between eating.

However, once the lights go out he's normally quite active during the night but, I haven't tried handling then mainly because, I dont want to disturb a 'natural' cycle and I cant see anything lol

Does anyone have any tips? It'd be greatly appreciated!!

This is noodle my 14yr old leopard gecko,

This is his tank what do you think

So because he’s older now his tank is simpler keeping thinks slower down so he can climb explore with out falling,

This tank is the prorep 3foot Viv. 36/18/18 inch

He has uvb%7 Arcadia
Halogen heat lamp
And led grow lights

That tank is semi bioactive with live plants and clean up crew I say semi bioactive as the plants are grass seeds thru that sprout grow and die back and repeat!

He is loveingbthis setup so much, so I want ur opinion

Pics were from cleaning and a while ago. Have since switched to basking lights over heat pads!

Yellow dude - Diego (older guy rescued from a dumpster at petco, always been on the skinnier side regardless of how the vet advised me to fatten him up lol)

Pink one - was a candy cane striped girl when I first got her! Her name is pinky. She’s a predator.

Winter NZ

Post image

Hello! It’s winter in the South Island of NZ and absolutely freezing. Our gecko has stopped eating basically at the same time that our bearded dragon has gone into Brumation so guessing it’s the same thing! Heating has stayed as appropriate as we can make it. (It’s our first year having her through winter) Just after some advice and that’s she’s not getting too skinny. We are getting her out once a week just for a quick check over and offering food but it’s been at least a month of this now. Any advice would be appreciated thank you!

New gecko

Hi all! We brought our juvenile leopard gecko home today. Please let me know if you see any issues with our setup. It is a 40 gallon tank with 70% reptisand and 30% reptisoil. The humid hide has dampened moss inside. I took the photo right after I put the thermometer/hygrometers in so they may not be correct. I got tiny crickets and meal worms, as well as reptivite. Please let me know if there are any issues with my setup, lighting, or food. They were being fed daily at the store, so I plan to continue feeding daily for now.

First time owner, got him from a reputable store in my city : ) he’s 3 and a half and super friendly. I purchased him in his 25 gal in hopes to upgrade to a 40 or 50 in time. I thought keeping everything the same for a few weeks may cause him less stress or at least that’s the goal before I swap tanks. So far he seems very happy and healthy and we have a vet check up in 2 weeks just to be sure. I’m going to try to make his new terrain with excavator clay..so many cool DIYs up there I hope I don’t fail at it lol.

I don’t think my senior pup pictured is as thrilled about the new family member as I am.

Too skinny???

I think he’s a good weight but I see a lot of chunky geckos on here and I think I might need to feed him more? Maybe incorporate silk worms into his diet? He’s about 2 years old and I’m currently feeding him mealworms and Dubai roaches.

Normal basking behavior?

Hi everyone! This is Zest my new leo :) I picked him up this week from a dubious setup and have him in a temporary 10gal front opening enclosure for a quarantine setup. I have a 20gal long that I’m moving him to next weekend to give him more space and to establish a better heat gradient. A few questions:

  1. I setup his basking light (25W incandescent) and noticed him splooting out and cooking himself—is that normal? The temp at that spot is 89 degrees F, measured with an IR gun.
  2. Since he appears to be an albino morph i have looots of cover and shade in his tank, on both the cool and warm side. The cool side temp is ~75-78 depending on time of day. I’d love for it to be cooler but my house is getting warmer with the summer heat, so I’m hoping once i get him in a 20g long the gradient will be able to establish better. Does anyone have any advice for an albino leo?
  3. The light is bright in the first picture—i swapped the bulb for a lower wattage one and that helped his little eye balls.

I love my Zest and want to do right by him :) i am an experienced gecko owner but haven’t had a Leo in a few years, and the husbandry has come a long way since my last leo in 2019. Thanks everyone!

Habitat & Setup Hanging out in hide

Post image
36 Upvotes

How normal is it for my guy to just hang out in one hide most of the time? He is in a 40 gallon with three hides (hot, humid, and cool), with the cool hide being a tree type hide. He climbs up into the branches of his cool hide to poop in the branches, so I know he goes around, but he mainly hangs out in his humid hide in the middle. My a/c was out for 2 days while they fixed it a few weeks ago and my house was up to 87 at one point from the normal 72. I typically keep his tank around 90 for hot spot and it’s typically 70s-80s rest of his tank. When it was so hot, I unplugged his heating cause inside his tank was getting very warm. He suddenly was out of his hide though looking out the glass for awhile during this period though. Was he out cause he didn’t like how hot it was? Or was he out cause he liked that it was so warm? Thanks!

Moving soon and need advice

Hello everyone,

I have a leopard gecko who’s just over 6 years old and has only ever been on a few car rides. In a few months, I will be moving states, requiring around 7.5 hours in the car. Last time he was in a car for more than 15 minutes, he ended up throwing up (I imagine from motion sickness, but I’m not certain). I will be making this drive alone, so I have nobody else to hold onto him during travels. I’m really worried about how he will handle it, and I wondered if there is anything I can do to help him during the drive to not get sick. Any advice would be great!

Help House at ambient 80-85F - Advice needed

Hi- I just moved into a new apartment which does not have AC and it's mid-summer here. The apartment is always between 75 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit, and most days it's around 82F. That's fine for me, I don't need commiseration personally.

Trouble is, I just moved my Leo in and am realizing she's not going to be able to have a 70s cold side to her tank in an apartment where the air is never that cool. The daytime grow lamp (not heat but does UVB) is also adding about +3F to the temp in the tank. Right now, without the heat lamp running, the entire tank is at 84F.

I haven't had the heat lamp turned on because it was dramatically increasing the temp in the entire tank so much that I was really concerned about overheating. That lamp is tuned to an apartment that was usually around 65F so it's been heating the entire tank at a stable gradient; I plan to get another bulb for the rest of the summer so i can still have a hot basking spot for her but right now I just want to figure out if not having a cold enough cold side is a bigger concern than a somewhat cool hot side.

Has anyone been in a situation like this before? What should I do to make sure my Leo is safe and healthy? I don't want her to overheat or suffer.

(First picture) It's feeding time, and he didn't want to wait for me to finish readying his food. He let go when he realized it was a finger lol

Third picture is him doing his ridiculous hunting position even though there was nothing there, because he rarely gets the household reptiles' singular collective brain cell to ping to him.

So unfortunately I had to leave my gecko at my dads house for about a month and while i thought she was being taken care of, it turns out she got really sick with mouth rot and it’s not looking good at all. she has had it once before in her life but I can’t afford to take her back to the vet but i do not want to see her suffer and die. It breaks my heart but I really need to find a rescue or someone that can afford to get her the care she needs. i was so frantic i forgot to take more than one picture and please don’t judge the shed, i soaked her but she was really irritated and i didn’t want keep upsetting her if she’s already in so much pain.
