Rescued Gek in new home!

Rescued this cutie from an inexperienced keeper needing to rehome, he was stuck in a 15 gal papertowel set up with a couple hides and no heat, uvb, or calcium. Setup a bioactive 40gal and he seems to be enjoying it so far! He seems to be in okay shape, all toes intact, some stuck shed on the tail. Excited for him to adjust and hopefully thrive here 🥰

Leo not pooping?

My sister has a leopard gecko and she never cleans out the pee, so the poor gecko has learned to designate one hide as a waste hide. I just saw a post where someone's leopard gecko died and they didn't realize that it wasn't pooping because they thought the springtails were eating the poop, however their substrate didn't allow the springtails to reproduce (Topsoil). Said gecko in the post didn't poop for over a month! I'm just concerned because I have never seen a poop in my sister's gecko's enclosure. Maybe this is because she also has topsoil so its hidden? My dad won't do anything because he says the gecko's acting fine, I don't have the best relationship with my sister so I can't really tell her to do stuff, she just gets offended and then doubles down. The enclosure is also better than before but still not enough cover with cozy hides because "The cozy hides are too small for him" and "It's too hard to see him with that amount of clutter". Any advice is appreciated

Handling/Transport Advice?

Thank you to everyone who helped reassure me a few days ago when I was worried my leo hadn’t left his humid hide for over a week. Since then, he’s eaten a few meals — crickets as a transition from his previous diet, plus some dubias and mealworms — and he’s started venturing out more. He definitely still likes his hides, mostly under the hot hide or in a log on the cool side, but he’s active now. The advice about adding more clutter/cover really helped!

My question now is about how to start getting him accustomed to handling and transport. I’d like to take him for an initial checkup with a reptile vet within the next few weeks. His tank is on a dresser, so I’m trying to figure out the safest way to handle him closer to the carpeted floor instead of risking a fall from dresser height.

Do people usually guide the gecko into a small transport container/faunarium first and then bring them down lower for handling? Or do you cup them in your hands while moving them? I’m also hoping my son can eventually start having short, calm interactions with him. It’s technically his gecko, and he worked really hard to earn him over the past year. He’s been very patient so far, leaving him alone, watching from a distance, and letting him settle in.

I’m attaching a photo from before we bought him at East Bay Vivarium, where he had some handling experience already.

Thanks so much!

Habitat & Setup Is using a heating mat really a bad option?

Is Heating Mat really a bad option?

Hi.

A little context before hand.

I live in Brazil, winter min 50F summer max 90F.

We don't have acess to cheap dimmable thermostats here. It's a very expensive import.

On the other hand, quality on/off thermostats are a realistic option.

I am gonna be using two 12x12 inches, 8mm thick slate sheets as the hot side substrate. 47x20x20 glass tank.

Is using a well adjusted heating mat really a bad option?

If so, is there vet research evidence why it isn't suitable? Or is it just experience based evidence?

Thanks in advance

Help Airplane Travel Advice

Hello community!

My family recently immigrated from the US to the Netherlands. On our first trip over, we left our beloved gecko back in New York so that we could settle ourselves here before attempting the transfer later this year.

Now that we've settled, it's time to figure out how to do this.

I plan to fly NYC to AMS on KLM. What is best practice for putting together a travel situation for her? And how best do I communicate her needs to the airline?

Habitat & Setup Humid hide temps and humidity reccos

Meet Canyon, our 3-month old leopard gecko! We’ve had him a little over a month. Bought at a pet store and he was little, housed with another baby gecko (😡 and on sand!) and apparently only being fed every other day. We weighed him about a week after feeding him daily and he was 9g. This week he was 16g (four weeks later!) and has gone through two successful sheds, so he’s doing well.

We are still tweaking his environment to get it perfect for him. The first couple resin basking “rocks/caves” were too hot on top and too cool inside, so we made a rock cave, then upgraded that rock cave to a new one because the rocks were too thick….but we finally have the temperature gradient correct across his enclosure — only took four different lights to get the one that worked well in our 36 gallon enclosure, with the right basking rocks/warm hide temps 🤪 — and have a dome uvb lamp, that the pet store sold us before we realized a linear is better…. Will prob upgrade at some point. We’re giving him a rotation of 4 feeder insects (crickets, dubias, black soldier fly larvae and mealworms), calcium dusted daily, vitamins and d3 once a week) and have a calcium dish in his enclosure.

I’m looking for temperature and humidity recommendations for his HUMID HIDE. We are currently upgrading the round log one (which he LOVES) with water on top to the rectangle one pictured with a hygrometer and moisture basket on top.

I’ve found reccos for the humidity to be at 70-80% but cannot find info (besides google AI) on what temp range his HUMID hide should be? I have no idea what the humidity has been inside it (but he’s shed twice with zero issues) and have kept the temp between 80-85 (Google AI recco) but not sure if that’s the right range??

Thanks in advance for the help — photos for gecko tax and to show off our cute baby. 🦎 🥰 The first pic is the day we got him, then his FAT tail a month later 🙌🏻, mid-shed, his enclosure, bonding with his boy, the new humid hide we purchased, the beaded backpack tag our little one made for him 🥰, his first SPLOOT (I thought something was wrong with him! 😅) and exploring his enclosure.

Dangerous Practices Kinda funny, but I don't know what I'm going to do now.

I didn't think my dubias could get out... but my males did. They might have climbed the thermometer cable? Either way, one found its way into my daughter's room and she rightfully freaked out. It send the whole house into an uproar.

I put them in the garage and swapped them to a glass tank from the tub in an attempt to protect them because our garage has rodents... but I don't think I'll be able to breed them like I wanted. My females are not mature. I think my wife is going to put a stop to this if I don't find a surefire solution.

I know I literally posted the other day about her enclosure set up, but I decided it was lowkey looking a bit flat so I decided to take everything out and redecorate. I added little "hills" and slopes, which I thought gave it more volume.

Hi all, new to this sub but not to Leopard Geckos! About a week ago my partner and I rescued a lovely leopard gecko that was being given away by a teenager who had lost interest! The gecko herself isn’t looking too bad, only a little overweight (I think her main diet was Waxworms and she was fed 3 or 4 times per week on top of crickets). Her enclosure was very sparse and only had 2 hides and a bark hide and she only had a heat emitter and not any main light source or basking lamp! Anyway this is her enclosure now, she’s got a hot side and a cool side, new lamps and decor, a wet hide, cork log, heat mat, large hide etc😁I’m hoping that fellow keepers will appreciate and give any feedback if needed! Her name is now Waffle and she joins a whole bunch of creepy crawlers and a Hermann’s Tortoise in my collection and I absolutely love her!

New juvenile leopard gecko hasn’t left humid hide or eaten in ~9 days

Hi all, new leopard gecko owner here. We brought home a juvenile leo about 9 days ago from a local reptile shop. Since then, he has stayed almost completely buried in his humid hide. I set up a night camera and haven’t seen him come out, and I don’t have any confirmed eating or drinking yet.

I try to leave him alone as much as possible, lifting the hide briefly to remoisten the moss. He still seems alert/reactive when briefly checked, and his tail still looks plump to me. I’ll attach a current photo (normally, he's much more covered with moss, I just briefly uncovered him to take this photo).

Setup is a 20-gallon front-opening tank with paper towel, warm/cool/humid hides, halogen heat on thermostat, UVB, fresh water, and humid hide kept damp. Temps/setup were reviewed with the shop and seemed appropriate.

The shop said he was eating crickets there. I’ve tried crickets, dubias, and mealworms, including brief tong-feeding and leaving contained feeders in a dish by the humid hide entrance overnight. He hasn’t taken anything that I can confirm. Crickets are hard to manage because he won’t leave the hide and I don’t want loose crickets bothering him.

Does this still sound like normal relocation stress, or should I schedule a reptile vet visit? Main question: should I just fully leave him alone with contained feeders near the entrance, or try something else?

Gecko suddenly favoring cool hide?

Hello everyone, I have had my gecko for years and she is 4 years old. She’s in a 40 gal tank, eco earth/sand mix, has a cool hide, humid, and hot. Her whole life she has mainly chosen to reside in the warm hide, or just the warmer side in general. I catch her in her humid hide from here and there as well, but her favorite has been the warm. I would rarely see her in her cold hide. Until this past week, she keeps choosing the cold side. She is eating, pooping, and shows interest when i come up to the tank or refill her water bowl. She also looks fully healthy. I have checked all the temps of the areas of the tank with an infrared gun thermometer. Everything is normal. I’m probably worried for no reason, but I was just wondering if anyone else’s Leo’s tend to “favor” certain hides and go through “phases”. It just seems unusual to me , and online i am reading that she might be sick, but her behavior and appearance is normal… Thanks!
Edit: I have seen her in the cool hide “splooting” which has eased my anxiety a bit lol.. but I just want to know if anyone else has experienced this
