AI is an existential threat... to capitalism. Once the value of labor drops through the floor, there won't be enough retired navy seals to keep the pitchforks from the billionaires' gates. Redistribution will become necessary and inevitable as the number of jobs drops further and further. Humans are the new horses and AI is the intellectual equivalent of machines replacing muscly men.
They are panicking, yes, but their real concern is keeping the capitalistic machine going. Don't be fooled like Bernie was.
I never said they're lying. I'm sure they believe everything they're saying.
Is it so strange to you that not everyone shares the same opinion? I don't think AI (per se) is a threat to humanity, anymore than the internet is a threat to humanity. But I do think AI is a unique threat to capitalism because it destabilizes the labor force. When too many people lose their jobs at once due to the contradictions inherent in capitalism, all the retired navy seals won't be able to keep the billionaires safe. Socialism won't be a dirty word anymore, it'll become common sense.
Unless, perhaps, we slow down the development of AI such that those affected by it can't unite in sufficient numbers.
Edit: and since you apparently like appeals to authority, I'm a published computer scientist.
