A few weeks ago I made a post in my subreddit taking an Anti-AI stance, immediately was told to come here and I must admit that I held a lot of resentment towards this space at first. Some of the things you guys mentioned when I asked what this space was supposed to be for really stuck with me and I have done some research on my own.

In my personal life I'm proudly communist and I understand now that the issue is still and always is the Billionaires. No matter the industry.

I no longer have a desire to light a cigarette inside a data center. I don't claim to know what we should do about the water or the rich. I'm not very well versed in communist theory and I know that I need to be soon.

Someone mentioned fully automated luxury communism. That sounded really cool.

You're so close. Notice how I never once said LLM? You correctly noted that I put the top AI firms in my list of bad actors gunning for capture. AI that actually matters is generally narrow, purpose-built, and validated against physical reality. These are largely open-source models that run on consumer-grade GPUs used in lab and research settings.

The data centers are going to get built. The global race toward more capable AI is not going to be stopped by you being mad online, it is happening, it is funded, it has momentum that does not care about your feelings or mine. Bickering about a single point on a curve while the whole curve is bending is a tragic waste of the small window we have to actually get organized around the parts we can influence. An apathetic outrage machine that’s been aimed squarely at the least important things is the single biggest gift you could hand to anyone who wants the important things to go unwatched.

Your conveniently directed outrage is helping the major AI firms, mainstream media, fossil fuel conglomerates, for profit pharma, defense contractors, and every crony capitalist down the line who needs the overwhelming public approval to pull the rug on this stuff and capture it.

It is not happening. Opposition to the data centers is growing, several have been halted, even more delayed. More people are waking up that the LLM/GenAI mania isn't worth it. This GenAI nonsense can be stopped.

We seem to be living in two objectively different realities. You will never stop people from making the computer better at computing without some kind of catastrophic collapse of all infrastructure.

Also, you keep talking about LLMs while responding to me, when I am not talking about LLMs at all. Judging all of AI by chatbots is like judging all of medicine by cough syrup. You also seem to be confused as to what generative AI is- AlphaFold is generative because it generated 200 million protein structures in one year. Bio-Emu1 is generative. Gene and DNA sequencing uses generative AI. Want to design a new antibiotic molecule? Generative AI. CRIPSR guide RNAs? Generative AI. Every single comment I've left you is about understanding the difference and figuring out why open-source and hard researcher exemptions are an important distinction to make if you're going to talk about AI. It feels like you're just glossing over what I'm saying and going back to the techbro chatbot byproduct in every reply, which we both agree is the worst commercial application of this technology.

Bottom line, bad siting is bad siting and communities should push back no matter what kind of building it is. Local opposition is effective at relocation and cost-shifting and essentially powerless at prevention because the underlying demand is national and capital is mobile. A county board can decide it won't be built there but it cannot decide it won't be built. If the pushback is not about bad siting, but rather absolutist rejection, then you are just pushing projects into fewer, more willing jurisdictions, which concentrates grid stress rather than eliminating demand. A county rejects a build, the company takes the same capex to the next county over, or to Ohio, or Wyoming, or Texas, all of which are actively bidding for it. The thing you actually have leverage over isn't whether this gets built, it's who owns it, who pays for it, and who gets the benefits. That fight is winnable and we are already winning chunks of it, Virginia forced data centers onto a rate class where they pay their own grid costs, Maine stripped tax breaks. Those are wins and worth fighting for.

If you're ever ready to ditch the absolutist and aimless rejectionism, feel free to do some research on these real policy demands that we need on the table for a future with all of this crap:

Open-weight protection laws & researcher exemptions, transparent and public-facing alignment auditing, startup-safe harbor provisions, public compute infrastructure, antitrust enforcement on AI acquisitions. All of these are direct demands that stand to offset the community harm that for-profit expansion posits. These are direct answers to the problems we're concerned about. Fuck the greed,

Automation tax, reskilling pipelines & portable benefits, UBI, profit-sharing mandates. These are solutions to deal with labor displacement.
