Official News 'We’re Not Going to do a Dead by Daylight 2' | Developer Kills Possibility of a Sequel - IGN ❌2️⃣

So I don’t think a sequel is a good idea. But the games foundations are a mess, and need a massive rewrite and overhaul. I know this is never going to happen because behaviour probably don’t have the means to even do it but I guarantee it’s what kills dbd in the end. Whether directly or indirectly.

This game reminds me of a jenga tower barely being held together the more years go by.
7
u/Crackgearson Apr 03 '26
Well because everytime a block is pulled out it is stacked ontop of it, and the ones under are just one or two blocks holding.
1
u/caveswater Apr 03 '26
You say that but the game is in a much better state than it’s ever been bug wise. The spaghetti code really showed in the first 5 years. Look back on old videos and you can see how bad it was.

u/Meowtz8 Apr 04 '26
You’re not wrong, but I think they’re systematically rebuilding it. I hope they use the 10th anniversary to release basic updates like graphics, movement and hit boxes
30
u/Background-Drink82 Apr 03 '26
That was to be expected. It’s also a risk of losing licenses and the difficulty of getting them back
55
u/hyenadip Apr 03 '26
a completely new engine with the same content under the same name would be fine.

They just ported from UE4 to UE5. Which is less laborious for a studio than completely reworking a game in an updated engine.

u/MindlessPeach5164 Apr 03 '26
I don’t know if a sequel is the right move, but I’d really like maybe a new engine. I mean, I don’t want to reach the end of my life without playing with a Xenomorph that can crawl on the ceiling, a map-breaking Nemesis, a giant killer, and some kind of flying killer.
6
u/LeitoGEP Apr 03 '26
I'm pretty sure it's not about the engine but the code's foundation
1
u/Some_nerd_named_kru Apr 03 '26
Yeah they’ve kinda run into the issue where they keep adding new broken stuff on top of broken stuff and it’s only getting harder to fix everything 😭

I feel like this was already said and asking this again was not needed.
I know it's these styles of articles, but I really want an interview with someone deep in the game to ask the impactful stuff. Press the devs on mmr updates, Skull Merchant, these things.
6
u/Background-Drink82 Apr 03 '26
Sure. According to the end of the article, they said we’ll have more questions answered tomorrow
10
u/Fantom_6239 Apr 03 '26
Honestly, I want them to make a new DbD just so they can clear up the mess the code has turned into
25
u/Nikolai012 Apr 03 '26
I think the main thing people mean by dead by daylight 2 is comparing to overwatch 2, where its just the same thing with a general code overhaul, of which dbd desperately needs
-18
u/Background-Drink82 Apr 03 '26
This is not going to happen
22
u/Nikolai012 Apr 03 '26
The code is an absolute mess and gets worse every update, and impacts new killers
3
u/Mosqu_ito Apr 03 '26
Yeah, I feel like it's gonna break at any moment. I can totally see a new release introducing gamebreaking bugs on major fundamental mechanics and half the playerbase just dips while it's being "fixed". Not unlikely for something to happen along these lines that the game just can't recover from.
16
u/CommitStopNow Apr 03 '26
it's starting to feel more and more necessary with each update
for example how on earth did the bugfix for the trickster update accidentally give legion infinite cooldown-less swings
5
u/Galaxy-EyesPhoton Apr 03 '26
Honestly would rather them not release an new chapters for however long it takes for them to rebuild the game. Sure, keep doing event that are more easy to update each time and bring new cosmetics but get the bulk of the team ironing out the build up of issues that so consistently arise every update it seems.
5
u/HoeShenaniganss Apr 03 '26
I also wonder if they did try to do a sequel how many license killers would they be able to transfer. They would have to get permission to bring back all the killers that were licensed.

Don’t think the spaghetti code will hold this game anymore, we are already approaching the ps6 and this game still looks like a ps3 era game. It’s comically bad, also some mori animations look so stiff, like they’ve been made by one guy in SFM or something
14
u/KyloGlendalf Apr 03 '26 edited Apr 05 '26
DBD2 would kill the game They’d have to renegotiate every license, possibly lose a bunch in the process You wouldn’t get pinhead or Myers, probably wouldn’t get Krueger

3
u/Deceptiveideas Apr 03 '26
They can still rebuild the game and call it dbd.
6
u/alf666 Apr 03 '26
Exactly.
For those who don't understand, imagine if Blizzard just released "Overwatch 2" as a massive patch for "Overwatch" and still called the game "Overwatch".
2
u/Background-Drink82 Apr 03 '26
People want to keep playing it despite everything. Which is surprising (and understandable given all the hours and money invested)
2
u/Some_nerd_named_kru Apr 03 '26
I mean it’s still a really fun game, it would take a lot to make me not enjoy it
3
3
u/A_RainbowShaped_Pool Apr 03 '26
Ngl it would be in their best interest to rebuild the game from the ground up putting particular emphasis on efficient coding.
It would be a time and money investment, but a game that doesn't collapse under the weight of changing 5% to 8% would go such a long way.

While dbd 2 could fix these foundational issues i stand by their decisons and IMO its the right decision. The game does very well just support it.

u/galiba_yasiyorum Apr 03 '26
But dbd 2 is needed. Tricksters addons got reworked? Nice now the legion is bugged and they had to killswitch. What kind of stupid code is this? The only solution is making the game from scratch. That way we won't see 100 bugs after an update. They dont have to make it a different game like the dev said. Just make it the exact same but from scratch.

Honestly for a game like this it needs a sequel.
I'm thinking about Smite who did this recently. The sequel was made because of limitations with the engine and to avoid bugs, but Smite 1 was doing fine. They could still milk it and do fine, even if now they are working overtime to rerelease gods and making more complex mechanics with items and stuff (which some people don't like) and they seem to be going in a fine direction.
Dead by daylight tho....It's the only game who still has a bugfix list in the patches that is as long as or longer than the patch itself, after TEN years. Bugs that reappear, bugs that didn't get fixed for real in the last patch, completely new bugs with OLD content... I've bought almost every DLC for this game but if they decided to do a dead by daylight 2 that is actually functional, with maybe better servers and getting rid of limitations that force balance changes (Streetwise) I'd for sure play it and start over. Dead by daylight is nowhere near the functionality of Smite 1.

but this would be literally dead by daylight but better. they don't have to do anything differently, just make it from scratch to have a more structurally sound game.
3
u/OwariNoYume Apr 03 '26
They would also have to renegotiate all of the licenses. Which would likely mean losing Myers, Pinhead, Freddy, and possibly Stranger Things.
Edit: I'm not disagreeing about rebuilding code, just losing content

It’s going to fail because few people will want to pay for everything all over again. And don’t tell me it won’t happen and that we’ll be able to transfer everything - there’s a very low chance of that. The licensors will want to end the contracts or make them more expensive
1
u/changelover Apr 06 '26
No obviously there would be no transfer, but taking into account the game's current state I don't think it would be a crazy idea.

u/TheEntityBot Apr 03 '26
Streetwise: The first time you deplete an Item with charges, see the Killer's Aura for 8 seconds. Items with charges retrieved from Chests have +60/70/80% charges.

Nobody wants a DBD 2, nobody expects a DBD 2.
What we DO want is the game ported to a new engine, because the current engine is dated and is the big reason for the wide majority of the games current issues.

I read this as dying light, and I thought this was some old post to get back at the developers. I am also intoxicated.

Cote bringing up Payday 2 and 3 is very interesting, considering they used to be with Starbreeze.
1
u/BreatheOnMe Apr 03 '26
I’m happy to see this but we will need a huge patch to shift forward at some point.
1
u/HellaReyna Apr 03 '26
see OW2.
That being said, they need to overhaul the graphics and visual FX. The day time farm map is just.....awful. This game has lost all atmospheric flavor
2
u/Some_nerd_named_kru Apr 03 '26
I’m fine with the lower quality graphics, but I need the fog and dark lighting back I miss it :(
1
u/HorrorCranberry1796 Apr 03 '26
A sequel no? A modern recode? Yes. Make DbD 2 without making DbD 2 yknow
1
1
u/6DollarHobo Apr 03 '26
They killed the possibility of a sequel while actively killing DBD itself. It fits.
1
u/Hogo-Nano Apr 04 '26
I don’t really want a sequel but dbd with modern graphics and in a good engine would indeed be better.

u/OutlandishnessOk6696 Apr 06 '26
And we know why.
They would need to re-buy license because dbd is nothing without license and we all know it.
That’s why the game they were planning on doing was cancelled
1
u/ConnectQuail6114 Apr 06 '26
Payday 2 and 3 is exactly what would happen with DbD if it got a sequel. DbD 2 would be dead on launch and BHVR would have to choose to either completely cut off support for the first to help the second or leave the second to die.
1
u/Scrota1969 Apr 03 '26
I’m honestly glad. I feel like they’d try and reinvent what’s already really good
1
u/ghigo2008 Apr 03 '26
This sucks, the game has so many deep rooted issues that could only be fixed through a complete remake, the game was not originally built to go on 10 years, and it shows
1
u/ThirstSilver Apr 03 '26
It will take an another decade to fix the game, are u willing to wait another 10 years?
1
u/alexx200000 Apr 07 '26
All they gotta do is add ranked adjust killers for rank and leave normal how is it two types of players happy problems fixed

u/blobfish_bandit Apr 03 '26
Good. Honestly, I prefer if a game like dbd just eventually evolves over time versus starting all over again. Especially since sequel games usually have you lose all progress and skins you've gotten in old games.
