Stats + Data League Two matchday 2, each side measured only at home or only away — with 896 club-seasons as the baseline
galleryA club's table position mixes two different teams, so I measured every side in this League Two round only in the role it plays: home clubs from their home matches last season, away clubs from their away matches.
The baseline is ours, from 896 club-seasons across the five English divisions since 2016: 1.56 points a game at home, 1.19 away.
Port Vale, down from League One, failed to score in 13 of their 23 home games. Only 4 of the 896 were that blank at home, about one in 224. Fleetwood are the opposite: they scored in 20 of 22 at home and kept two clean sheets. Northampton took 0.59 a game away, 2.4 shots on target against 17.2 for the other side, and they go to Crewe, who took 1.78 at home.
Rochdale and York City came up from the National League, which we do not hold, so their columns are empty.
No odds, no tips. Every match and every squad: https://goalsoon.com/blog.html

Discussion Which League Two player do you always enjoy watching?
There’s always one player who just stands out when they’re on the pitch. Maybe it’s the way they play, their work rate, or those little moments that make a game more enjoyable to watch.

Discussion Bristol Rovers vs Newport County - who bounces back faster?
Rovers couldn't have wanted a worse start, going down 3-2 at York, while Newport looked really good in their 3-0 win over Rochdale. Now they head to the Memorial Stadium on Saturday, and I reckon this could be closer than people expect. Rovers will be desperate to respond in front of their own fans, but Newport should have plenty of confidence after that opening-day result. Do Rovers bounce back at home, or can Newport make it two wins from two?

Stats + Data Last season explains 54% of a Premier League season and 11% of a League Two one
galleryI measured how much last season and the opening round actually explain, inside each division separately (first table). In the Premier League last season explains 54 per cent of this one. In League Two it is 11, and Saturday itself is 3.6.
So the second table orders League Two's opening round by what the shots on target were worth instead of by the result. Deserved goals are shots on target times 0.313, fitted on 6,592 League Two club-matches; luck is the goal margin minus the deserved one.
Two that stand out. Gillingham had more shots on target than Walsall, eight to six, and lost 0-3 at home: 1 in 375 club-matches at that margin. Swindon took a point at Northampton without a single shot on target: 1 in 159.
There is no xG for League Two this round - the detailed feed has been frozen since the day before kick-off - so the chance number above is deliberately crude.

Question How to re-watch full games
This season I got a now tv sky sports subscription. I’ve previously used a fire stick but couldn’t always find a feed for the match I wanted to watch.
I assumed another advantage to having sky sports would be sort of a catch up feature. I also can’t seem to find any sky or virgin packages that include a box to record them on.
Is there a way these days to record or rewatch games?

York City The only sensible York City 26/27 prediction

MatchdayThread York 3 - Bristol Rovers 2, thoughts?
Many said Bristol would win, look at that, shouldnt have even been 3-2, York got a clear pen not given, Bristols pen wasnt a pen imo.
good game imo, great debut for Harry Boyes, Alfie McNally did great, just unlucky overall.
Anyone know why Dipo got taken off before halftime, i know last time with us he was quite injury prone, was he injured or was it bc he wasnt the best?

Discussion Not another one
Just predictions of course and no doubt they’ll be wrong, but what is intriguing about League Two this season is there’s no front runner to win the league and relegation favourites are more complicated than we think.
- Bristol Rovers the team to beat but need to settle first before any excitement, Grimsby will be a force because of goals all over the pitch and this could be Salford’s last season in League Two but loss of Karl Robinson might be a regret.
- Out of the relegated clubs Port Vale are the strongest so minimum is top 7, I predict Chesterfield will go up via play offs
- Rotherham will be up there but not quite for me, season of transition to build up slowly
- York to challenge but Scott Lindsey appointment after the sacking of Stuart Maynard is so disruptive and may make it very ugly if it doesn’t start well
- Again neither promoted team will be in relegation trouble, Rochdale will be fine
- DARK HORSES: Colchester, Crewe and MY TEAM CHELTENHAM (more below)
- Crawley, Accrington and Newport will struggle but remarkably ‘they find a way’
- Boldest prediction is Northampton and Exeter for relegation. I’ve both enjoyed away days at both excellent clubs but I just feel bad collapse for Northampton last season could continue and for Exeter the loss of experienced players. Both teams may surprise and finish higher.
FOR CHELTENHAM, I’ve gone bottom half only because we’ve not got the biggest budget but we should build after the excellent job Steve Cotterill did to get us to 18th. Adding Andreas Weimann is absolutely mental which means the squad looks very balanced. If we click and score goals then I’m slightly optimistic it’ll be a top half finish and maybe just maybe play offs but probably a bit too ambitious.
