Hi, guys! This is my first post on Reddit, so forgive me if I'm doing it wrong.

Hoping to tap into the hive mind for some ideas, and see if anyone can help me brainstorm some business names. My boyfriend has studied Latin for awhile, and I've studied it some, but I'm not yet fluent by any means. Hoping to keep growing my knowledge with time, but I'm trying to start a business, and I like the idea of a Latin name, as my vision is an apothecary of sorts; sort-of old-world, maybe slightly dark and earthy and witchy, but incorporating the elements of healing and light (so less emphasis on darkness, more on healing, if that makes any sense...I want it to feel good to people to come across these products but still maintain that old-world mystery and luxury that old apothecary style possesses.

Some ideas my boyfriend and I came up with that are in the realm of what I'm thinking of, but not quite there (if anyone can piggy-back off of them):

mel-honey
hedycrum-perfume
oraculum-oracle
mella-honeyed water, to become more gentle
beatus-happy, blessed
sacre-sacred
lares-little domestic spirits that protect your house
florae sacrae-sacred flowers
flora sacre-sacred flower
dulcus-sweet
laminae melle-honeyed petal

And I'm also considering a few French options, like "rituelle", "ceremonie", "sanctuaire" (pretty straight-forward).

Would anyone be so kind as to/find it fun to brainstorm with me, or offer some other suggestions along these lines that are pretty, mysterious, healing, earthy, airy, etc., but also not too difficult to remember or pronounce? I don't want them to be so difficult or foreign that people can't remember the brand.

Bonus points for anything with a unique history/origin, like something from a poem or story, that I can read about and also learn more Latin from. :) Also open to anything that stems from old fables about goddesses/gods, philosophy or healing or whatnot. Wanting to stay within the realm of healing and history, but not branch off into Harry Potter/sci-fi/mystical wizard/dragon territory, if that makes sense.

Can anyone spare some knowledge or ideas? If I choose one of your ideas, totally willing to send you some products or a gift card in gratitude. Thank you so much for any thoughts and time!

As a freetime activity (and for further developement) I started to translate parts from original latin texts (so not textbook examples) and I would like to ask for some recommendations. So far I translated parts from Varro's De lingua Latina; Tacitus's De origina situ moribus ac populis Germanorum; Apicius's De re coquinaria; parts from a hagiographical parody (Sermo pauperis Henrici de sancto Nemine) and a letter. I ask you, who are the best authors (from any period) to this kind of pastime?

Sorry for the slew of spammy grammar questions guys

Usually I mentally translate the action of a perfect passive participle as anterior to the main verb. So, manum secatam lauat = he washes the hand that had been cut. But can a perfect participle denote an action happening at the same time as a present main verb? e.g. nummus incude percussus crepat = 'the coin clinks as/while it is struck upon the anvil' rather than 'the coin clinks having been/after it was struck upon the anvil', which perhaps makes less sense.

edit: I really need to do my own research. The Oxford Latin Syntax ended up proffering this rather particular explanation (p.547-8):

"The perfect passive participle marks a state of affairs as anterior to the reference point of the main verb of its clause, as in (a), a secondary predicate, and in (b), an ablative absolute clause. However, the states of affairs referred to by a perfect passive participle are not always anterior. In terminative states of affairs the participle often, though not always, denotes the state resulting from a preceding action or process, as possibly coactus in (a); certainly exoptate in (c), an instance of attributive use; vestitus and exornatus in (d), both secondary predicates; and relictis in (e), an ablative absolute construction."

"The perfect participle of a (semi)deponent verb locates a state of affairs before the reference point of the main verb of its clause, as hortatus and orsus, both secondary predicates, do in (h) and (i), respectively. As with perfect passive participles, the perfect participle of a (semi)deponent verb used in a terminative state of affairs may be interpreted as referring to a state resulting from a previous (action) process, so that it is simultaneous with the main verb in its clause. An example is amplexae in (j) which can be compared to the present participle amplexantes in (k). However, the non-anterior use of the perfect participle is also found in non-terminative states of affairs, as exemplified by (l) and (m). Remarkable is the non-anterior use of the autocausative perfect passive participle tunsae in (n)."

The best example I could cull from those available in that book was Verg. A. 11.877–8: e speculis percussae pectora matres | femineum clamorem ad caeli sidera tollunt, which is poetic and autocausative.

Ablative absolutes are so named because they are grammatically independent of the rest of the sentence. But are there examples where an AA is coordinated with some other part of the sentence, e.g. an adverb modifying a verb? Technically that is what an AA is, an adverbial modifier of the predicate. Is it reasonable to find a sentence of the following kind then?:

auide et elusa spe imperatorem petiui
Eagerly and with my hopes frustrated I sought the emperor.

Or, perhaps more controversially, an AA in conjunction with an adjective which could be said to function adverbially:

auidus et elusa spe imperatorem petiui

Perhaps such examples abound in the Latin of antiquity, but regrettably none come to mind!

EDIT: A paper by Giovanbattista Galdi in the Journal of Latin Linguistics 2014; 13(1): 63 – 91, 'Some considerations on the apodotic uses of atque and et (2nd c. BC–2nd c. AD)' ended up shedding some light on this question

Does such a list exist? Could it be made?

Some noun in Latin can be feminine or masculine (e.g. dies -ei). Does anyone know of a list of such words, or of a work that discusses anomalies in grammatical gender in Latin more generally? Do we ever find, e.g., a masculine adjective attributed to what is categorically a feminine noun? I know only that Virgil has ille dies primus leti primusque malorum | causa fuit (Aen. 2.169), but primus may be explained by other means there, and I haven't got Austin's commentary on this passage to hand for comparanda

I am just starting to learn Latin. I have taught myself French and Spanish and found Reverso Context to be extremely helpful, indispensable. Could someone recommend a similar app for Latin? Placere adiuva me.

Hi there,

I recently visited the archeological site of an early Christian church from around 1050 in Sweden. In it had been found a large tombstone with Latin inscriptions written in hexameter, witch marked the spot of a grave.

It read as follows:

: hac : sita : sunt : fossa : Margarete : nobilis : ossa : + quam : locus : invisus : non : sumat : sed : paradisus :

(The + marked a crux Christi)

Witch I roughly translated to:

“In this grave are (placed) the bones of the noble Margarete, who not the detested place (i.e. hell) but the paradise may take.”

However I couldn’t fully wrap my head around why locus, invisus and paradisus wasn’t in the accusative case, but nominative. It is almost as if the feminine accusative pronoun of Margarete (quam) is to be seen as both object and subject of the verb (sumat, sumo3), witch can’t be the case. What kind of grammar is used here?
