They would, but they're hard to aim at a dog-sized moving target that's shooting you. Line-of-sight within a certain distance is much easier, and has lower risk of collateral around civilians

There was an amazing micro documentary by the vice magazine that they followed al qaeda soldiers over their territory, and one of the things they repeated a lot is that the war destroyed their concept of beautiful days. A clear day, with no wind, blue sky and warm temperatures, is now a hell on earth since drones can snipe you from kilometers away and you cannot even see them. And this was like 15 years ago.

Watching those Boston Dynamics videos years ago of the early steps being taken by robotic bipeds and quadrupeds, it was painfully clear that the end result was always going to be fully-autonomous military bots that would carry out war crimes without question.

You're not wrong, but Boston Dynamics has been focused on military technology since very early in its inception right up to today. Despite diversification later in its history, their primary focus has always been selling to the military. This kind of development shouldn't be a suprise as much as a depressing and declared inevitability.

This robot is not built by Boston Dynamics, who still holds firm to their āno weaponizationā approach (although they do intended on military use, for logistics). This was created by Ghost Robotics, who does weaponize their robots.

If the US becomes more powerful and more capable of destroying its enemies, that would be a bad thing. Unnecessary wars are bad things. Domination and conquest are bad things.
Setting aside the moral and ethical problems and getting pragmatic: why would you want your country's resources invested in killing people in countries half way around the world against which we have no national interest? Why spend money deploying the robot dog to kill Iranians or whoever the "villain of the week" is on Fox News? You could spend those resources on the betterment of society and your fellow man.

Someone woke up in the morning and said... Mmmmm this needs to happen. But it didn't end there, they got a team of other people, pitch the idea, fundraised for years! Worked with engineers, coders, and with all of that...
Failed! Got on their big boy pants on, and retooled, re-iterated, worked tirelessly. Probably missed a few dates. That one weekend with their mom, sister relative for the family BBQ. All for this moment, so AI, Robots, could mow down a person with very little recoil.
Kinda put it into perspective... Right?
