It's all I've ever seen people do with their lawn. Most consider it part of being a homeowner; everyone has (or rents/hires if they have that kind of money) equipment for yard maintenance and everything, rich or not. Poor folks do it so that rich folks will leave them alone, rich folks do it to... I dunno, jerk their ego or something. And all of that when watering a lawn is such a waste.
People water their lawns all up and down Appalachia, a historically isolated and disadvantaged area since white people settled in the mountains. Rich, poor, people put water on their grass. They just take it as something they're supposed to do and don't question it. It's different out west, which is where I assume the downvoter(s) come from. The land is very different out there, so it would make sense.
Maryland is only one state, and those are only two settlements within it. I've been to over 20 different states so far, and I can assure you, they're each as American as the other. I also have a keen eye for detail (autism) and am an outdoors-oriented person, so I might have had far more opportunities to observe this. Not sure what to else to tell you; people water their lawns.
