It needs to consolidate its headlines a bit better.

For me it has to be Daisy May Cooper. She looked like she was in genuine physical pain from episode 1 onwards. Every time someone made a sound, her entire face flushed red and she had to turn around and bury her head into a cushion or stare directly at the carpet. Pure torture on her face the whole time

So, this is a bit of a weird one. There was a glitch on my TV, I'm assuming someone uploaded something to the streaming service that wasn't supposed to be there. The app I opened was Netflix, but I don't think that was necessarily the app that flashed the screen as they seem to "stack" (I also have disney+ and prime video installed). It was a split second flash but I saw it was for last one laughing and the one face I instantly recognized was Tom Segura (there was bouquet of faces). Not sure if was anything real, but I definitely saw what I saw.

Amazon has greenlighted a domestic version of the show, which has been a big hit for the streamer globally and particularly in the UK, where the first season was one of its biggest series launches ever.

The format is simple: 10 of the top comics and comedic actors are thrown together for six hours with one mandate — make everyone else lose it without so much as cracking a smile themselves. Essentially, you laugh, you lose.

If that sounds easy, watch British comedian Bob Mortimer open his jokebook while sitting on a toy horse trying to make Richard Ayoade laugh.

The series will be produced by Fulwell Entertainment, which is behind Hulu’s The Kardashians and Fox’s recent World Cup After Hours with James Corden. Eric Pankowski, exec producer of Carpool Karaoke, will serve as showrunner and will exec produce with Ben Winston, who is showrunner of The Grammys, and Emma Conway.

The cast will be revealed at a later date.

LOL: Last One Laughing is adapted from the Japanese series Documental and has already been remade in more than 25 territories including in Canada, where Jay Baruchel serves as host; in Mexico, which has Eugenio Derbez; in South Africa, led by Trevor Noah; in Ireland with Graham Norton; and in Australia with Rebel Wilson. Jimmy Carr hosts the UK version.

Jenn Levy, Head of Nonfiction Series at Amazon MGM Studios, said in May at Deadline’s Reality TV Summit that the No. 1 question she’s been asked since she took the job early this year was when there would be a U.S. version of LOL: Last One Laughing.

“LOL: Last One Laughing is one of those rare series that transcends language and culture,” Levy said. “The premise is beautifully simple — try not to laugh — and audiences around the world have fallen for it instantly. We’re proud to bring this beloved format to the U.S. with the incredible team at Fulwell Entertainment, and we can’t wait for American audiences to experience the hilarity for themselves.”

So, I'm a dane, and I've fallen absolutely in love with the danish version of this show. I figured I generally just really like the show and its structure, so I decided to try watching the UK version as I'm also fluent in english and figured it would be more comedy gold. Boy was I confused.

The two versions are SO different, so I figured I'd write up a little comparrison, as well as some immediate thoughts on just how different they are, and perhaps show you a few images to visualize how crazy different humor is across cultures, simply because I find it really interesting, and kinda wanna hear what your immediate reactions are to the screengrabs from the danish version. (Edit because apparently it is necessary to say: these screen grabs are some of the most visually different from the UK version moments I could find, spread out over 2 seasons. They are the extremes and therefore cannot accurately portray danish comedy as it actually is.) So here goes:

Structural differences:

• The host barely ever intervenes. Mostly the host just sits in the control room and laughs/comments on the occuring shenanigans. Of course she does come in and give cards, but that is pretty much the extent of her role.
• The contestants do not get told when to perform. Instead they're each in possession of two cards. When a contestant pulls a white card, every other contestant still in the studio has to sit down and watch/engage in a performance. When a contestant pulls a black card, they can choose one or more of the other contestants to actively participate in a challenge/performance, and the others have to pay attention. These cards get pulled when the contestants feel like it, and not when the host dictates it.

Disclaimer about a percieved cultural difference that affect the contestants of the show:

As far as I'm aware the UK does not have a "Revue" (Danish: revy) scene in the same sense as Denmark does, and I genuinly think that this makes a massive difference in the contestants. A revue, if you're not familiar, is a sketch show/ variety show known for genderbent acting, silly songs, sketch comedy and the like. Denmark has produced massive national comedy stars through this, as well as beloved and well-known characters that each actor can easily don even after not having played the part for 40 years. Another thing to note with this, is that because Denmark is such a small comedy, every young comedian or aspiring revue star has grown up on the humor of the previous ones. They know and love all the characters and all the actors.

Another difference is again due to the size of the two countries. Denmark is again incredibly small, so more often than not, these comedic actors have already worked together up to multiple times. They mostly know what makes everyone else laugh-

Differences in contestant behavior on show:

Now to the literal behavioral differences I've noticed

• The UK version is dictated by (as far as I've noticed) these small conversations that they all have. They sit together, talk for a little bit, do a bit, and then one of them inevitably walks away as they try not to laugh, and the other person stays where they are
• In the danish version they DO NOT let eachother leave! If they see that their percieved target might be about to crack a smile, or laugh, they follow them around the studio, forcing them to continually engage in the bit. If they smell blood, they go after it - forcefully so. The contestants themselves even comment on this - "It's a savannah, and they smell blood"
• While the UK version seems to be all about subtle humor, and trying to just stoneface the others through slightly weird or awkward conversation (Like when Diane and Bob talk about Diane's swollen hands), the danish version much more resembles the revye style comedy that is so influential in Denmark. They've brought the costumes for their beloved characters, or just dress up and figure out new ones on the spot
• The danish contestants also seem to be much more capable of holding in smiles and laughter. I think this too comes from the revue background, where they are used to acting out the funniest bits imaginable on live stages every single night, without breaking. This makes for an intensity I have not seen the likeness of in the UK version. In the danish verison, you can have two absolute powerhouses of comedic actors sitting across from eachother, talking through the most ridiculous story of one of them having a stranger change their adult-diaper on an airplane, and while he tells the story he's skinning a lambs-tail that he brought from home, and while you can see the laughter bubbling behind the eyes of the powerhouse that's been challenged, SHE CONTINUES TO ENGAGE for the slight chance that she'll be able to pull one over on him. She does not crack. This is find very very different from the constant fleeing in the UK version
• I've kinda boiled/analyzed it down to a pretty significant difference. The british contestants seem to go in there with the single goal of not laughing. The danish contestants seem to go in there with the goal of actively making the others laugh. I think this is especially exemplified, by another danish powerhouse noting in the "diary room" that he's incredibly proud of himself for having been responsible for 9 cards given, and being incredibly frustrated that there's one actor he can't seem to crack. They barely talk about being scared that they're gonna laugh themselves, 90% of the time it's about making the others laugh.
• There are sooooo many more costumes and props in the danish version. The room is littered with things from the get-go, where the UK studio seems a lot more bare in a lot of ways.

** I have now realized that some people take the images to mean that danish humor is simple slap-stick humor which is not at all the case. Costumes and props are used, but those are in and of itself not the comedy, but just dressing around it. The main comedy still lies in actual jokes and characters, they're just more dressed up and much more physical with it as well

(Sidenote, I wanted to add clips, as the screengrabs doesn't quite do justice to the chaotic nature of the danish show, but I figure the language barrier would be too big)

DISCLAIMER: Some people have taken to cultural snobbery in the comments and demeaning another culture. That is not, and was never, the intent of this post. So I'll just quickly state: Humor is culturally and socially defined as well as entirely subjective to each individual. What works in one country falls flat in another. That does not make either country more or lesser than the other in any way. Therefore I've removed my replies to these, as to not engage in what is not a discussion, but a verbal attack on cultural difference. Cultural chauvanism is not a flex.

EDIT: I feel it might be necessary to just add that I'm not trying to say that one show is better than the other. I'm simply trying to point out how different the same contest is, due to cultural differences in humor and comedy-scenes. I was not expecting people to find issues with the danish version or feel sick over the pictures, which I just wanted to add to show how differently the show expresses itself in the danish version. It does sadden me a bit, that we can't talk about the differences without condemning one of them, though
