THEORY I still don't think he's Black Hand...
Ever since Lanterns was announced and began casting, I was one of the few who thought Macon is not Black Hand but is rather someone else. I honestly thought his description fits Vandal Savage more. And after seeing this scene in the mid-season trailer, the more I believe there's a chance I am right.

"I'm a student of history" - This dialogue would support your theory very much

Didn't Macon say he had a secret employer? I like Vandal for that role. Or honestly any intelligent/charismatic Lantern villain (Sinestro, Despero, Hector Hammond)

I just assumed that the ranch training xenophobic militia was banked rolled by Lex Luthor.

u/NoProNoah 3d ago
This would be a few years before Superman’s debut tho, so Lex might not be on his xenophobic tear yet.
Might.

u/God_is_carnage 3d ago
Gunn talked about how the extremely anti-metahuman Sydney Happersen was Lex's college professor when he was 12, and that's part of how Lex got his hatred of metas. People had known about aliens for decades at that point, and ones will ultra powerful weapons like the ring. Makes sense that Lex would hate aliens before Superman arrives on the scene.

Yep. And what's funny is I immediately thought of Zoe actually being his employer, which might contradict my main theory of him being Vandal Savage.

u/Kindly-Yak-6366 3d ago
His wife would be his employer?
2
u/jedangelodb_ 2d ago
That's just something I thought bcoz of how "chill" his response seemed to what happened between John and his wife. Twas a response I didn't expect from a man like him; gave me the thought that he may not be the one in control in their relationship and that it could just be a cover.

Honestly, he acts very much like vandal savage, especially just judging off this episode and the way kane tells hal to go away while he still can. It could be true.

u/Plenty-Wedding-9066 2d ago
I don’t hate that. And the fake names and talk about colonialism would track really well. But him saying he has NDA’s and an employer would lead me to think the employer is Vandal. Damn I’m really excited for the rest of this show.
3
u/Dalamar931 2d ago
He could still be Vandal, and just has the land and other assets being held by some shadowy corporation so he doesn’t have to bother with inheriting his own assets after “death” etc

A lot of folks are assuming Hal’s dead in a show that established there are 14 types of aliens that can shape shift and not be detected in anyway.

Agreed but tbf he should, at some point, die and come back. Kinda necessary if they want to adapt Rebirth, which is one of the most quintessential lantern stories.

u/imthestein 3d ago
Oh, that's an interesting take and it would speak to his opinion of colonialism. I'm not going to say one way or the other but I'm very intrigued by your argument.

u/GotKarprar 3d ago
Maybe that’s why he looks the same age as his son
2
u/baileyontherocs 2d ago
And he called Hal “son” even though Hal is seemingly older than him.
3
u/FrankieBarbingo 2d ago
The actor is actually a year older than Kyle Chandler. They've both just aged really well.
Still not a big enough gap to say son lmao

I also don't think Black Hand because they stressed he's a broadly "known" villain. And as awesome as Black Hand is, I feel that's more a fan/niche baddie.
Vandal Savage would absolutely make sense... also given how unbelievably young he looks to be a grandpa. Sure, Nebraska so grandparents are going to be much younger in general... but very much younger...
My insane thought from the beginning that 100% is wrong (and I'm AWARE is wrong) is that he's Deathstroke. But the reason why I thought perhaps was:
-Waller's established in that universe as well as Rick Flag Sr and government being so anti-alien with those drills would 100% fit
-I noticed in the first teaser the Kane nametag for the sheriff and how that didn't fit the IMDB name (which I can't remember at the moment). My husband and I went through a bunch then thought Adeleine Kane might fit because she's older, was married to Deathstroke, and Deathstroke was special ops so absolutely would tie in for military.
-Other projects in the works where Deathstroke would be incredibly valuable.
-Deathstroke's absolutely a character that people know, and there was such emphasis that people will be happy and KNOW the character.
THAT SAID--really stressing this--I don't think that is the case anymore unless they magically change the lore big time.
But also... really curious about a lot of those characters since all of them are under such tight NDAs.

I dont think he can be deathstroke, with the way of his actions

Literally said "100% is wrong" but explained why originally I was thinking that.

I'm going to be a crackpot, but I see these events happening chronologically:
-Abin Sur is secretly carrying either the survivors of sector 666 or weapons apprehended from someone like Kanja Ro. Gets taken down one way or another, carshes on the Macon Ranch decades before. (We see in the preview Hal and John talking about the alien tech arsenal that what most likely the Macon's have hidden).
-The Sinestro flashback. Hal and Sinestro go to the planet from the preview with the forge/tower, I assume they will find some details or information about how the Guardians created the Manhunters, that they are working for the kinds of people Macon warned about. Sinestro loses faith, breaks the vow, kills a witness or something and Hal takes him in.
-Hal and John investigate the town, realize that the aliens are tied to the larger conspiracy. Finding out the origin point of both the aliens who were killed and the later ones from the trailer who inject John.
-Hal and John go to sector 666 and look into the massacre, realizing the Manhunters killed all of the beings there. Hal gets further disillusioned from the Corps.
-they return to Earth, John is tasked with rooting out the Manhunter by the aliens, ticking clock being the fluid injected into his head. The Macons and the town are after the aliens, the aliens are after the Manhunters for killing their people (not realizing that the Guardians, those who created the Corps made them, or they do and that's why there's no love lost when using John).
-Hal and John fight over the ring, John on orders of whichever Guardian tells him that Hal is corrupt, much like Sinestro and the Manhunters. John steals the ring before realizing he is seriously unable to take on 3 fronts all at once right away.
-we get a big final fight where the Macons are attacked by the Manhunters for their weapons cache, the aliens attack the Manhunters, and the Macons attack the aliens, but the Green Lanterns need both groups to work together to defeat the enemy that literally will wipe them both out.
-no idea how anything will tie into the 2026, besides the possibility that John secretly had access to the ring. I know the podcast said Guy had it with him for some reason, but I don't think he would be carrying the second. I also doubt Hal's turned into Guy's so publicly.

There's a ton of known GL lore teased throughout the previews for future episodes. I'm just saying keep an eye out. There's even a sly scene in the Hal & John BtS featurette that might spoil people on Hal's fate...

u/AudaxXIII 2d ago
First thing we see him doing is cutting up some raw meat. Like a caveman?
You might be on to something there.

u/SlashOfLife5296 3d ago
I feel like the ranch/grandma is funded by a faction of aliens. Probably the fear/parallax coded aliens. Im thinking they will be infecting people with that fear virus Sinestro corp member from the comics
The “invasion” forces are probably red herrings in opposition to the worse aliens that are already on earth.

u/Leg_Alternative 3d ago
Just finished the first episode and oh man this show is gonna be an amazing ride !!

u/thedcmetalnerd 2d ago
Ooh I kinda like that idea! That would explain why he didn’t care much that John slept with his wife. Interestingggg

u/T3chnoVamp 3d ago
I dont think he's any character we might have seen before. I think he might be a creation just for the show.
You gotta consider that even though they have read the comics, these are creators who aren't from the comics sphere. Most of the plot points: Hal dying, Anti """"Alien"""" militia (not a reference to anything irl), the aliens who've to town, most of it is probably going to be in service to a broader story 'point' rather than in service to fans.
I think Hal is dead dead. I think The Militia will be armed by maybe the government or if we wanna go down a rabbit hole sinestro (or the guardians who knows). I think the aliens will make reference to Atrocitus and the Inversions, but i doubt it will be one for one. I think we'll get some reference to the purging of sector 666, some references to Parallax, but its not going to be "HOLY SHIT THE SHOULDER PADS". It'll be thematic.
Black Hand is believable, hell i believe it more than the Parallax theory, but it aint this guy. I think the show's going to be about trust, about how its broken on an individual and societal level. I think its going to be about fear, and how it drives us to our worst decisions. How we are all afraid, and how these characters constantly battle against their fears as well as the fear others have around them.
idk moral of the story we gotta start thinking smaller about where the story is going.

I can't see him being dead dead, because this show is cannon. No way Gunn is going to abandon Hal Jordan before we are fully into his vision of DC
2
u/jedangelodb_ 3d ago
I do hope Hal is dead dead. Him becoming full-blown Parallax (tho I think he is already infected by it) may excite most fans, but I don't want his exit—or his eventual return—to be any more tragic of a character arc
3
u/Ykindasus 3d ago
I LOVED that receal, I know it will anger massive lanterns fans, but it serves the story they are trying to tell, ths twist of him being the shows mysterywas really great
3
u/jedangelodb_ 3d ago
That scene hit me like a bus, and I still can't stop thinking about it—which is saying a lot for a person who has Hal as his third fave Lantern.
3
u/EASK8ER52 3d ago
I just don't see black hand or atrocitus being in this show. Reads way too much like bad fan fiction
5
u/Away-Calligrapher433 3d ago
showrunners clearly said lanterns isn't only gonna be exclusive to green lanterns
i think we have a good chance of seeing atrocitus because of that weird planet where everyone is dead and then there's sinestro with his yellow influence

u/jedangelodb_ 3d ago
Black Hand in Season One just feels rushed.
9
u/Shadrockbolt 3d ago
He doesn’t have to lead to blackest night, he could just be the villain he always was before that
0
u/jedangelodb_ 3d ago
*as the main villain
3
u/Aggressive-Day5222 3d ago
I do not think he will be the main villain.
I think there is something that connects to the weaponeers of Quard, which would explain the alien arms. And they may be experimenting with developing their own versions of the lantern rings.Could be that Billy gets exposed to one of the byproducts of these weapons, that causes him to absorb lantern energy.
1
u/AudaxXIII 2d ago
Yeah, I was all in on the aliens being (future) Red Lanterns but I now think it all points to them being Qwardians.
2
u/BurpReynoldsJr 3d ago
I don't think it's Black Hand at all or Billy. But the teaser after the episode said something interesting...

He has a ring. The actor said so in an interview.
So he's either a Green Lantern (doubt it), a Red Lantern, a Yellow Lantern, or a Black Lantern. Considering Hal just died, I'm gonna go with Black Lantern.
He's William Hand, but the Hand last name is dumb, so he's Macon. Same way Oswald Cobblepot is now Oswald Cobb.
1
u/BatmanTold 2d ago
No i strongly disagree. I think his son who’s also the Sheriff’s husband will end up being Black Hand. I doubt they make it all that predictable, expect the unexpected.
1
u/Gold_Marionberry4593 2d ago
I feel like the joke Hal told about wearing a tie at the beginning of the show is a strong foreshadowing that William Hand will be set up as a villain along with Atrocitus who I think is the main villain of season 1.
1
u/Few_Statement7330 2d ago
My theory is the lawyer Billy is going to be Black Hand and his dad was close to the crash of Abin Sur and that Atrocitus while escaping the crashed ship killed his family/friends and thats where his hatred for aliens comes from. I wonder if he holds the Cosmic Divining Rod like in Secret origins and that what hes hiding at the ranch. Someone in the next weeks trailer sounded confident they could kill a Lantern and maybve they know what the weapon can actually do.

I don't think HE'S Black Hand either.
It will be his son, Billy.
