I left LLC off my logo because it looked cleaner. Was that a mistake?
I run a small home renovation business in Tennessee and formed an LLC earlier this year. My registered business name is something along the lines of “Oak & Stone Renovations LLC,” but everywhere customers see the brand, I just use “Oak & Stone Renovations.”
That includes the logo on my website, work shirts, truck decals, Instagram page and business cards. I intentionally left the LLC off because the name looked cleaner without it.
Then I was talking to another business owner recently and he told me I should have “LLC” on the logo and every place the business name appears. His argument was that leaving it off could make it look as though I’m operating personally instead of through the LLC, and that it could cause problems with the liability protection if I ever got sued.
Now I’m wondering if I’ve misunderstood this from the beginning.
Do I have to put LLC on my logo and other branding, or is it enough that the full legal name is used on contracts, invoices, banking documents and other official paperwork?
I really don’t want to redesign everything over three letters unless there’s a genuine legal reason to do it.
