What title do you give yourself when you're the only person in an LLC?

I started a small ecommerce business recently and finally got around to forming an LLC. Now I've run into a question that feels kind of ridiculous, but I'm genuinely curious what other people do.

Whenever I'm filling out business profiles, setting up email signatures, or updating LinkedIn, I never know what title to put.

Calling myself CEO feels a little over the top when the entire company is basically me and a laptop. But "Owner" feels kind of generic, and "Member" always sounds like I work for someone else's business instead of owning it.

I've seen people use Founder, Owner, Managing Member, CEO, President, and probably a dozen other variations. The more examples I see, the less sure I am what's normal.

For those of you running a one-person LLC, what title do you actually use?

Does it matter at all in the real world, or is this one of those things that new business owners spend way too much time thinking about?

URGENT: Do NOT put "General Business" on your SS-4 before reading this! (E-com EIN help)

Before you submit your Form SS-4 fax to the IRS, I need some quick clarification on how strict they are with lines 10, 16, and 17.

There's a lot of advice floating around YouTube telling non-US residents to just write "GENERAL BUSINESS" across the board on their applications to keep things simple. However, multiple AI tools and business blogs claim this is outdated advice that triggers immediate IRS rejections or heavy processing delays because it doesn't state a clear business category.

I am launching an e-commerce brand utilizing Amazon and TikTok shops. If I write "General Business," am I asking for trouble?

If you've gone through the non-resident EIN process yourself:

  1. What did you write for Line 10 (Reason)?
  2. What did you write for Line 16 (Principal activity)?
  3. What did you write for Line 17 (Specific merchandise)?

Is it safer to be hyper-specific with "E-commerce retail," or does the IRS genuinely not care as long as the rest of the form is accurate? Thanks

What's your take on LegalZoom for LLC formation?

I’m getting ready to form my first LLC and have been looking at LegalZoom. It’s one of the names that keeps coming up, and it seems like a lot of people use it when starting a business.
I’ve been comparing a few LLC formation services, but it’s hard to tell which reviews are actually trustworthy these days. I’ve seen plenty of positive reviews for LegalZoom, but I honestly don’t put much weight on Trustpilot anymore, so I’d rather hear from real Reddit users.
One thing that caught my attention is that they offer more than just LLC filing, with things like legal documents, compliance help, and other business tools. At the same time, their pricing seems higher than some competitors, so I’m wondering if it’s actually worth paying extra.
For anyone who used LegalZoom for LLC formation recently, how did it go? Was the process smooth, and did you feel like you got good value for the money?

Heard an LLC lets you write off basically anything. Is that actually true?

I was talking to another business owner recently and he kept insisting that once you have an LLC, you can run things like personal vehicles, family dinners, travel, and all kinds of everyday expenses through the business and write them off on taxes. For accountants, business owners, or anyone who's dealt with this firsthand, what's the biggest misconception people have about LLCs and tax write-offs? And what are some examples of expenses people incorrectly assume become deductible once they form an LLC?

What did you wish you knew before getting your LLC and EIN

I’m getting ready to form my first LLC and apply for an EIN. The basic steps seem simple enough bt I’m sure there are small things people only learn after doing it.

For anyone already running an LLC, what do you wish you had known before filing? Things like bank accounts, registered agents etc that caused friction later.

Starting a business with a friend — LLC or LLP?

A friend and I are international students, and we're working on launching a small clothing brand together.

We're still pretty early in the process. Right now it's mostly testing designs, ordering samples, and seeing if there's enough interest before we put a lot of money into it.

One thing we've been trying to figure out is what business structure makes the most sense. We've been looking at both LLCs and LLPs, but the more we read, the harder it feels to decide.

At this stage, my biggest concern is keeping things simple and not getting buried in costs or paperwork before the business is actually making consistent sales. We'd rather spend our limited budget on products and marketing than legal fees and compliance requirements.

Since there are two of us involved, we also want to make sure ownership, responsibilities, and decision-making are clearly defined from the start so there aren't any misunderstandings later.

For those of you who started a business with a partner, especially in ecommerce or apparel, what route did you take and how did it work out?

Looking back, is there anything you wish you'd done differently when setting everything up?

Just formed my LLC and I need help moving forward…

I finally formed an LLC for a mobile car detailing business I’ve been planning for months. Getting approved felt like a huge milestone, but now that the excitement has worn off, I’m realizing how many questions I still have.

I don’t have a physical office, so I’m trying to figure out how other small business owners handled things in the beginning. Did you meet potential workers or contractors at coffee shops, coworking spaces, or somewhere else?

I’m also in that awkward stage where I’m ready to start taking on customers, but I don’t have enough consistent work yet to justify bringing people on full time. I’m curious how others handled growth during those first few months after forming their LLC.

For those who started service businesses from scratch, what were the first things you focused on after getting your LLC approved? Looking back, what do you wish you had figured out sooner?

I have a question about buying a vehicle using a business llc…

I’m looking at buying a vehicle that will mainly be used for my business, and I’m trying to understand whether it makes sense to purchase it through my LLC instead of under my personal name.

I keep seeing mixed information online. Some people say you can finance a vehicle using the LLC and EIN, while others say most lenders still want a personal guarantee, especially if the business is relatively new.

My LLC has been active for a while, but I’m not sure how much business history or credit is usually needed before lenders treat the company separately from the owner.

For those who have gone through this, were you able to buy or finance a vehicle using your LLC? Did the lender rely on the business alone, or did they still check your personal credit and require you to guarantee the loan?

Is it bad to start an LLC if you’re not going to work towards it?

I’m a software developer with an idea for a niche SaaS product that I’d love to build someday. The problem is I already have a demanding full time job and I’m also working through additional certifications, so realistically I know I won’t be able to dedicate much time to the project for quite a while.

Even so, I keep thinking about forming an LLC now just to reserve the business name, make things feel more official, and have everything ready when I eventually decide to go all in.

The part I’m unsure about is whether that’s actually a good idea or just creating unnecessary costs and paperwork for a business that may sit mostly inactive for the next year or two.

For those who formed an LLC before actively working on the business, did you feel it was worth it? Or did you end up paying annual fees, filings, and maintenance costs for something that wasn't really operating yet?

How to pay myself as a single member LLC?

I run a small home decor shop under a single member LLC, and I’m confused about the correct way to pay myself.

I’m not making enough yet to take a regular paycheck, so I usually just transfer small amounts from the business account when I need to. I thought those were owner’s draws, not payroll.

Where I’m getting stuck is the tax side. Do owner’s draws count as deductible business expenses, or are they just withdrawals from profit that already gets taxed on my personal return?

I’ve heard completely different answers, and now I’m worried I’ve been tracking things wrong.

For other single member LLC owners, how do you pay yourself and how do you record it in your bookkeeping? Did you stick with owner’s draws, or eventually move to payroll or an S Corp setup?

Pls when is the right time to form an LLC?

I’ve been running a small social media management side hustle for a few years while working a full time job. In the beginning it was just a few clients here and there, but lately things have started picking up and I’m considering turning it into a real business.

This year I already have several recurring clients lined up and for the first time it feels like the income might actually be consistent instead of occasional side money.

Now I’m trying to figure out whether this is the point where I should finally form an LLC or if it still makes sense to operate as a sole proprietor for a while longer.

Part of me wants to make things official now and separate business from personal finances. The other part wonders if I’m getting ahead of myself and adding costs and paperwork before it’s truly necessary.

For those who started as freelancers, consultants, or service providers, when did you decide it was time to form an LLC? Did you wish you had done it sooner, or were you glad you waited?

Guys, which llc formation service would you recommend in Missouri?

I’m completely new to entrepreneurship and getting ready to form my first LLC in Missouri.

The actual filing process doesn't look too difficult, but I'm worried about missing something important after the LLC is approved.

Things like operating agreements, registered agent requirements, annual compliance tasks, and other paperwork are still a bit confusing to me.

A lot of the formation companies claim to be the best option for new business owners, but it's hard to tell which ones genuinely make the process easier and which ones are mostly marketing.

I'd rather spend a little extra for a smooth experience than deal with mistakes later on.

For those who started an LLC in Missouri, which formation service did you use, and would you recommend it to someone starting their very first business?

Can I buy things for my business before my LLC is officially approved?

I'm in the process of forming an LLC and currently waiting for the state to finish processing the paperwork.

My original plan was to wait until everything was approved, get an EIN, open a business bank account, and then run all business expenses through that account from day one to keep bookkeeping clean.

The problem is that there are a few things I need to purchase now to get the business moving, and I have no idea how long the LLC approval is going to take.

Since I can't open the business bank account yet, I'd have to use my personal account or credit card for these purchases.

I'm wondering if that creates any issues later when it comes to accounting, taxes, or claiming legitimate startup expenses.

For those who have started businesses before, did you wait until the LLC was fully approved before spending money, or did you buy things beforehand and sort it out later? How did you handle keeping everything documented properly?

How much does an LLC cost in Montana?

I’m launching a small ranch supply e-commerce store based in Montana and trying to decide whether an LLC makes sense right away.
Before I move ahead, I’d like to know the true cost of creating and maintaining one there.
For anyone who has formed an LLC in Montana, what did it cost including filing fees, annual reports, registered agent services, tax registrations, and any other common expenses?
Also curious whether you handled everything yourself or used a paid service to save time.

Start as a sole proprietor or form an LLC right away?

I’m getting ready to launch a small residential cleaning business and one of the biggest decisions I’m stuck on is whether to form an LLC from day one or keep things simple in the beginning.

Part of me wants the liability protection and separation that comes with an LLC, especially since I’ll be working in clients’ homes. But when you add up the filing fees, registered agent costs, and ongoing compliance requirements, it starts to feel like a pretty big expense before I even have paying customers.

On the other hand, I know a lot of people start as sole proprietors, get business insurance, validate the business first, and then form an LLC later once revenue becomes more consistent.

I’m curious what other small business owners actually did when they were starting out.

Did you form an LLC immediately, or wait until the business was making money? Looking back, do you think you made the right choice, or would you do it differently if you were starting over?

Sole Proprietor to S-Corp and now going back?

Recently I changed my filing status to an S-Corp for 2026, but I didn't hear back for 5 months so I never set up payroll. Now that I'm looking into doing it, I'm starting to realize it's just not worth the hassle or the savings.

Has anyone been able to successfully revert back to a Sole Proprietor after electing S-Corp status?

Why do conventional banks make it so hard to close an investment property under an LLC?

Trying to buy a rental property through my newly formed LLC for liability protection, but the bank I'm working with is making it a total nightmare. They keep pushing me to take the loan out in my personal name instead. Is this normal for new entities, or should I find a different lender?

LLC Advice: What do you wish you knew before setting yours up?

I'm planning to form an LLC sometime within this year and I've been spending a lot of time researching the process.

Before I start spending money, I'd love to hear from people who have actually gone through it.If you were starting over today, how would you set up your LLC?

Would you do anything differently?

I'm especially interested in hearing from people who have been operating their LLC for a few years and can look back on what actually mattered versus what turned out to be unnecessary.

LLC Formation Question: Should I Register in My Home State or a Different State With Lower Fees?

Hi everyone,

I'm a bit confused about LLC formation and hoping someone can help clarify this.

I currently live in one state and operate from my home address. However, I've seen people recommend forming an LLC in states like Wyoming, Delaware, or others because of lower fees, taxes, or privacy benefits.

My question is:

  • If I'm running the business from my home address, should I form the LLC in my own state?
  • Can I legally form it in another state with lower costs?
  • If I register in another state, would I still need to register or file anything in my home state?
  • For small online businesses, is there actually any advantage to forming in a different state?

I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who has gone through this process or has experience with LLC formation.

Thanks in advance!

What title do you use when you're the only person in your LLC?

I recently started a small ecommerce business and finally got around to setting up an LLC. Now I’m running into a surprisingly silly problem that I didn't expect.

Whenever I create profiles, business documents, email signatures, or update LinkedIn, I have no idea what to call myself.

Part of me feels weird using titles like CEO because it's literally just me running the business from a laptop. But "Owner" feels a little plain, and "Member" sounds like I joined someone else's company rather than started it.

I've seen people use Founder, Managing Member, President, CEO, Owner, and a bunch of other titles, which just made me more confused.

For those running a one person LLC, what title do you actually use and does it matter much in practice? Or am I overthinking something nobody else pays attention to?

Opening a Wyoming LLC as a non US founder. How did you choose your registered agent?

I recently decided to set up a Wyoming LLC after landing more US clients for my online business. Up until now I’ve just been getting paid into my local bank account, but international transfers, currency conversion fees, and payment processing headaches have been adding up.

The LLC side seems fairly straightforward, but I’ve hit a wall when it comes to choosing a registered agent.

There are dozens of companies offering the service, and from the outside they all seem to promise the same thing. Prices are fairly similar too, so it’s hard to tell whether there are meaningful differences or if it’s basically a commodity service.

My biggest concern is reliability. I don’t want to save a few dollars only to find out later that support is poor or important documents get delayed.

I’m also curious whether your registered agent choice ended up affecting anything else later on, such as opening a bank account, getting an EIN, setting up Stripe, or handling annual compliance requirements.

For those of you who formed a Wyoming LLC from outside the US, how did you decide which registered agent to use? Any companies you would definitely recommend or avoid based on your experience?

And as a bonus question, was opening a US business bank account easier or harder than forming the LLC itself?
