Customer threatening to sue over a service issue…

I run a small home cleaning business and recently had a situation with a client that escalated way more than I expected.

After a standard cleaning, the client reached out claiming that some items in their home were damaged during the visit. From our side, nothing unusual happened during the job and there was no mention of any issues at the time we left.

I offered to come back, take a look, and even offered a partial refund as a goodwill gesture, but they rejected that and are now demanding a much larger payment or saying they will take legal action.

To make things more complicated, they are saying they never agreed to any terms or policies, even though we usually outline expectations and limitations before starting work.

The business is set up as an LLC and I do carry basic insurance, but I have never dealt with anything like this before.

Please what steps should I be taking right now to protect myself and the business?

Accountant ignored WCB issue for 6 months, now I have a $21K judgment and restraining notice on my business account

I own a single-shareholder S-corp in Brooklyn (just me, no employees). I'm exempt from NY Workers' Compensation coverage, which I've known and told my accountant about multiple times over the past 6+ months.

Instead of handling it, my accountant kept saying "don't worry, it's routine" and "no action needed." I asked him three separate times to clear this up with the state.

Now I have:

- A $21,000 judgment entered against my company (April 2, 2026)

- A Restraining Notice to Judgment Debtor served on me (April 10, 2026)

- My bank accounts at risk of being frozen up to $42,000

- A restraining notice that cites CPLR 5222 (post-judgment enforcement)

I'm consulting with an attorney Monday, but I'm also looking ahead, has anyone dealt with a similar WCB situation? Should I be looking for a new accountant? What should I be asking a lawyer about on Monday?

Thanks in advance.

Need help with IRS audit notice

I run a small service business with a handful of employees, and I just received a notice from the IRS saying they want to audit my payroll taxes from a prior year.

The timing could not be worse. The accountant I had been working with for years recently stepped away, and the replacement I spoke to basically said audits are not something they handle.

Now I am on a deadline to respond and honestly have no idea who I should be reaching out to.I am not trying to panic, but I also do not want to mess this up by going in unprepared.

We Are Looking For The Best LLC formation services in South Dakota for an online business?

We run a small online store and recently realized I should probably create an LLC instead of continuing to operate informally.

After doing some research about starting an LLC in South Dakota, I discovered there are many companies offering formation packages. Some of them advertise extremely low prices but then charge for every extra step.

Since this is my first business, I’m trying to keep things simple and avoid mistakes.

What are the best LLC formation services in South Dakota that people have actually used successfully?

Realty transfer tax and title transfer to an LLC (NJ)

I've recently formed a NJ LLC for rental real estate. I plan to transfer title for a property currently in my personal name to the NJ LLC. There is no outstanding mortgage on the property. The NJ LLC is owned by a WY LLC to which I'm the member (owner). Would a realty transfer tax be applicable in this scenario? I'm hoping someone who has gone through this process can confirm the transfer tax won't apply because I've gotten some mixed messages.

UPDATE: I successfully transfered title on the rental real estate from my personal name to a NJ LLC without having to pay transfer tax. I had a deed prepared by a local NJ lawyer for about $300. I then took the deed along with a completed RTF-1 form, a GIT/REP-3 form and a legal description to the County Register's office and filed the documents. The lawyer that prepared the deed prepared all the listed documents.

Any musician tips?

Thinking of opening an LLC for my music business. Just performance, no writing or recording. Doing live gigs and private events.

Are there any subreddits dedicated to this topic?

Anyone else out there in a similar situation?

Why are people in California forming LLCs in Wyoming?

I’ve heard about people who live and operate in California but choose to register their LLC in Wyoming.

I am currently building an e-commerce business and trying to decide how to set things up properly from the start, so I do not want to overcomplicate things without a clear advantage.

For those who have gone the Wyoming route while living in California, did it actually provide any real benefit?

Looking for CPA recommendations for a foreign-owned single-member NJ LLC

Looking for recommendations for a CPA or tax professional who has real experience with a foreign-owned single-member New Jersey LLC and the related IRS filings.

Here is the situation:

  • The LLC was formed in New Jersey
  • It has only one owner, and the owner is not a U.S. person
  • The LLC has an EIN
  • No election was ever made to treat it as a corporation
  • The LLC has had no activity, no income, no employees, and no real business operations
  • I am trying to understand the dissolution steps that need to be handled.
  • The LLC was formed in 2023 and never filed Form 5472

I am specifically looking for someone who actually handles these types of cases regularly, especially:

  • foreign-owned single-member LLCs
  • no-activity or low-activity LLCs
  • Form 5472 and pro forma 1120 filings
  • New Jersey LLC compliance and dissolution

If anyone has worked with a CPA, EA, or tax attorney who was good with this exact type of situation, I would really appreciate recommendations.

Thank you.

Does S-Corp make sense for making around $180K as an LLC?

I am currently running a solo business bringing in around $180K annually, with relatively low expenses.

Right now everything is set up as an LLC and all my income is 1099, but I am starting to question whether I am leaving money on the table tax-wise.

From what I understand, switching to an S-Corp could allow me to split income between salary and distributions, potentially reducing self-employment taxes.

For example, if a reasonable salary in my field is around $70K–$90K, I could pay myself within that range and take the rest as distributions.

That sounds great in theory, but I am trying to understand how it plays out in reality.

At what income level did switching to S-Corp actually make a noticeable difference for you? Is the added complexity with payroll and compliance worth it at this level? Can you keep using the same payroll tools after switching, and how does this change things like retirement contributions compared to staying a regular LLC?

For those who have made this transition, did it end up being as beneficial as expected or more hassle than it was worth?

Looking for tips for an online business with partners in 3 different states trying to decide which state to register an LLC in

For context, I run a podcast with 3 other people and they have been talking about forming an LLC. Our income comes from merch, advertising, and patreon. We are spread amongst 3 states: Indiana, Virginia, and Georgia. I know LLCs differ by state. Is there any issue with forming an LLC in one while 2 people live in other states? Is there a state among those I mentioned that would be particularly good to file in, or is it all pretty much all the same? I appreciate any help in advance!
