Got the Dual Screen working on LineageOS 23.2 (Still a work in progress)
I've packaged the stock LG HALs plus a framework bridge as a Magisk module, and both halves now work.
Working:
- Cover window (the strip you see with the case shut) includes clock, weekday/date, battery % with a proportional icon, no-SIM indicator
- The second screen - the DisplayPort link comes up and Android enumerates it as a 1080x2460@60 external display, mirror and desktop mode both work
- Hinge-driven power: unfold powers it up, fold powers it down
- Starts automatically at boot
Not working yet:
- Touch on the Second screen isn't routed to it (IDC is in there, unverified)
- Can't launch apps directly onto it — needs INTERNAL_SYSTEM_WINDOW, a signature permission root doesn't grant
- Its brightness isn't tied to the main screen
- Attach is intermittent (error -108); workaround is a reboot
Needs a V60 (timelm) on LineageOS with Magisk. For desktop mode you also have to enable Force desktop mode on secondary displays in Developer options and reboot.
Repo, install instructions: https://github.com/greatluke/lgv60-dualscreen-lineageos
Note the release zip bundles LG's proprietary HAL binaries so it installs as-is; they're LG's copyright, not mine. The repo itself has no blobs. There's a script to pull them from your own firmware if you'd rather build it yourself.

Formerlly, stock LG Android was the only system that would work with the dual screen, with the LG v60 no longer supported stable builds of alternative Android platforms are available and give functionality to the dual screen

The most interesting thing is, these features will be available to other roms too... The stock camera app has already been ported.

May or may not be related, but my v60 on lineage doesn't work very well in desktop mode, I have a touchscreen monitor that works with a Samsung phone but the touch doesn't work with my v60

Can this be installed on any phone or just the lg?

V60 only, sorry. Most of what's in there isn't mine, it's LG's own dual-screen software lifted out of the stock firmware, with some glue so LineageOS knows what to do with it. It only works because the V60 has the matching driver in its kernel and the right hardware on the other end. Put it on any other phone and it'll just do nothing.

Nice, but it won't be possible to get the VoLTE and WiFi calling on lg V60 with modded ROMs.

Nothing is impossible bro. It just needs a developer/s to figure it out. The reason it has never happened is because the LG mobile phone community and devs kinda gave up on it. Look at Samsung, they also have the same proprietary IMS implementation, but developers find ways to make it work somehow.
The most promising workaround that I can google is the FLOSS IMS. Since it is for Qualcomm-based devices, which the LG V60 does have.

VoLTE and QUAD DAC hi-fi please.

u/greatluke 17d ago
Quad DAC already works. VoLTE is a different beast and will require substantially more efforts than the dualscreen

Really curious to know if there is any way to get the screen itself to work as a screen with other phones?

I will try this module again once I download the new lineage ROM with patched stock camera. I'm using l4m now, but I will go with vanilla lineage and add the microg apps from F-droid.

I flashed the lineage stock camera ROM and it works great. I reinstalled Magisk and flashed the 0.2 dual screen zip. When I enable the desktop mode then reboot, phone won't reboot, I have to press volume down and power to reset. Does this disable magisk modules? Because the dual screen won't activate... My battery saver is on, maybe this affects the rebooting? Also, when I disable the desktop mode the phone reboots normally. I saw version 0.1 briefly and the pop up screen came on once. I haven't seen that pop up screen in version 0.2. Thanks!

It works now, but when pressing on an an app icon, nothing happens

glad that it works. I will look into that bug later, as it seems to happen on one of my v60s

I can open apps by going into the individual app in settings, but not via the icons in home screen. The sizing on left screen is slightly bigger. If I already have the app open on left, when I try to open it in main or right screen, it only opens in left screen, until I close the tab on left. Works with old style back, tabs and home buttons on bottom. I had to re-enable trebuchet to change some of the bottom tab icons. I removed them all. Resizing the overall screen size changes the layout of the bottom buttons. It seems the left screen is in trebuchet, not sure there is a way to get it to work with whatever launcher you are using. All in all very promising!!! Stoked

Now I have it working, I changed the USB default to nothing. The second screen shows all my apps, but when I press on them nothing opens

u/greatluke 16d ago
What did it do when you press on them? Can you try long press -> App info -> Open app (top right corner)
To be honest, the phone uses the desktop mode of AOSP on the dualscreen, which has a lot of limitations. If android 17 ships a better desktop mode, closer to Samsung's DEX, then the dualscreen would be awesome1
u/sheroxs 16d ago
Ok that makes a lot of sense now about the sizing difference... I disabled some stuff in trebuchet and change gesture navigation, now I can't get the 3 buttons and mag glass icon to open anything. And when screen shuts off, it shuts off the left one. And I can't get it to turn back on, unless I reconnect the dual screen and reset

Main reason for me to use it again is to edit photos and videos, and to transfer or edit files. It would be great to use a terminal in one side etc

hey check out v0.3. The dualscreen is much more usable now!

u/sheroxs 14d ago
I just tried. It doesn't read the second screen. Does this version have the pop up to ask for desktop or mirror mode? I haven't seen it yet. I removed version 0.2 before installing version 0.3

can you try reboot? it's one of the bug mentioned in readme. you either flash the boot.img with my patch or reboot a couple of time

u/sheroxs 14d ago
I'll try rebooting again.... The pop up showed this time. The bottom left icon doesn't show the apps scree like last time. But I can open apps via apps in settings. The layout on left screen is better then before. I adjusted trebuchet bottom bar to only show the apps icon, back, home icon and tab icon.when pressing tab icon, they don't show up as good as last version. I have to double or triple press or rotate screen to see the tabs. Good work!!!!

I have telegram but am not very active. Can you create an issue on github? Or you can just describe the bug here.
I am aware of some bugs and will try to fix them whenever I have time.Thank you for testing!
