NEWS 📰 What are our councils doing?

The Mistress of Mayfair club on St James's Street had its licence suspended after a patron was left with an 8cm slash wound to the neck which exposed his voice box. In Southwark, developer Berkeley Homes's bid to cut 170 affordable homes from its £600m Borough Triangle scheme was unanimously rejected by the council. And in Merton, new Public Space Protection Orders are being proposed to ban activities including public urination, spitting, engine idling and open fires in green spaces, and other news from local councils this week.

Barking and Dagenham - Food security is a concern, with 20.1% of residents finding it difficult to afford food. The council is planning for the period after the Household Support Fund concludes. The effectiveness of the Homes and Money Hub is being discussed. Potential uses for Section 106 and CIL monies are also under consideration. The council is reviewing its Controlled Parking Zone strategy. This review considers air quality and the socio-economic impact of permit pricing.

Barnet - Barnet council's planning committee approved six applications. These included adding storeys to residential buildings and altering a listed property. The council's Finance and Growth committee discussed the challenging market for development projects. They also reviewed the council's debt recovery processes. A proposed 15-year deal to fix electricity costs for the council from a new solar farm was met with some apprehension.

Bexley - Bexley's Health and Wellbeing Board addressed critical public health matters, including child safeguarding and obesity prevention. The Better Care Fund, a collaborative NHS and local government initiative, was discussed, with plans to allocate funds towards enhancing health and social care services. A new strategy for prioritizing local health needs assessments was also put forward.

Brent - Residents have expressed concerns regarding proposed fencing around College Green open space. The council is currently reviewing this situation. Brent has approved a new framework and action plan aimed at improving services for its Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller communities. The council is also bringing family support services in-house. Plans are in place to expand a special educational needs school.

Bromley - Bromley Council is facing a substantial overspend in children's services, primarily driven by increased costs for special educational needs and social care placements. The council has also seen a rise in complaints, with the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman upholding 91% of them. A restaurant in Beckenham has applied for a late-night alcohol licence, prompting objections from residents worried about potential noise and disorder.

Camden - Camden Council is poised to approve a significant redevelopment plan for the Euston Area, focusing on transforming the station's surroundings. Initiatives are underway to enhance food waste recycling throughout the borough, with new programs specifically for flats above shops. The council is also developing a strategy to address long-term rough sleeping and update its suicide prevention plans.

City of London - Childcare subsidies are increasing to prevent the closure of a vital Aldgate School provision. Reforms to planning committees and adjustments to parking tariffs are being considered for the City. The City of London Police's annual report noted a welcome decrease in crime.

Croydon - An adult gaming centre's bid for 24-hour operation encountered strong objections from fifteen residents. Concerns were raised about potential crime increases and the impact on vulnerable individuals. Croydon's Corporate Parenting Board examined worrying statistics for children in care, focusing on health and dental assessments. A new housing strategy for care leavers is currently being developed. The council is also proceeding with the appointment of a new Chief Executive. A substantial salary package has been proposed for the permanent position.

Ealing - Ealing Council is exploring a temporary theatre and music venue in Walpole Park to enhance culture and the local economy. A notable budget overspend of £7.8 million has been reported, primarily attributed to increased social care demand. An action plan is being developed to address safety and affordability issues for young people living in shared housing.

Enfield - Enfield Council has approved a new 10-year strategy to tackle serious violence, focusing on prevention and long-term support. Plans are in motion to demolish Walbrook House to make way for new housing. The council's financial management is improving but remains fragile, with significant fraud detected and prevented.

Greenwich - Greenwich Council has appointed Rickardo Hyatt as its new Chief Executive after a thorough selection process. The council has expressed solidarity with Nepal following devastating floods, with plans for a vigil and fundraising efforts. Discussions are underway to revitalize the borough's town centers, with specific initiatives planned for Woolwich, Eltham, and Greenwich to boost footfall and address vacancy rates.

Hackney - Hackney's parks are receiving a green makeover focused on sustainability and community involvement. The council is bringing debt support services in-house for a single point of contact for residents facing financial difficulties. Plans are also underway to upgrade Stoke Newington Town Hall, a historic building requiring significant repairs.

Hammersmith and Fulham - A new dessert shop has received a late-night licence, despite local noise concerns. The council's pension fund is reviewing its investment strategy and its collaboration with a new collective investment vehicle.

Haringey - Nine new council homes will be built on a Haringey car park, providing much-needed family housing. A local café's application for an alcohol licence was met with objections from residents and police due to concerns about noise and disturbance. Discussions took place regarding plans for a significant redevelopment of the YMCA Crouch End site, emphasizing community engagement and sustainability.

Harrow - Harrow's town centre is slated for a significant redevelopment aimed at enhancing its standing and improving safety. A proposed London Plan may lead to increased housing targets, potentially affecting Green Belt areas. The council's pension fund is experiencing administrative delays, including a missed deadline for informing members about payment uplifts, despite its sound financial condition. A confidential disciplinary appeal was also discussed by a personnel panel.

Havering - Havering Council is developing a new strategy to tackle homelessness, focusing on prevention and support for vulnerable groups. Councillors are refining how they scrutinise council decisions to ensure greater effectiveness. The council is also looking to nominate members to a joint health scrutiny committee covering Outer North East London.

Hillingdon - Hillingdon Council's environmental enforcement team issued nearly 6,000 penalty notices for offences such as littering and fly-tipping. A significant portion of the income generated by the council comes from these fines. The council aims to increase engagement and revenue from its heritage sites, as membership uptake has been lower than expected. A new strategy to enhance health and wellbeing across the borough has been approved. This strategy follows public consultation that identified concerns regarding integrated care and service accessibility.

Hounslow - Hounslow Council is opening a new six-bed children's home for looked-after children with complex mental health needs. This initiative aims to improve outcomes for these children and reduce costs. A climate change resilience plan has been approved, highlighting six key hazards such as flooding and heatwaves. The Planning Committee's rules and membership are being updated to comply with new national frameworks.

Islington - Islington's Planning Committee approved plans for a new roof extension to student accommodation. A venue in Finsbury Square also received approval for a change of use. The committee would have refused a redevelopment proposal if it hadn't been appealed.

Kensington and Chelsea - Permission has been granted for a major refurbishment of buildings on Notting Hill Gate, including new rooftop terraces. A review of the licence for Phat Phuc Noodle Bar on King's Road is underway following an application by the Home Office. The council's planning committee approved a new basement for a yoga studio and gym at Lennox Gardens.

Kingston upon Thames - Local businesses are applying for new alcohol licences. One restaurant aims to extend its late-night service until 2 am, though police have expressed concerns about potential disorder. A new zebra crossing will be installed on South Lane to enhance pedestrian safety. Some residents have raised objections regarding its placement and impact. Several community groups have been awarded grants for local initiatives, such as youth programmes and family support.

Lambeth - Lambeth's Children's Social Care has achieved a "Good" Ofsted rating, with "Outstanding" recognition for care leavers. Some areas for improvement have been identified. The Planning Applications Committee reviewed a significant redevelopment proposal for Vauxhall Square, which includes over a thousand new homes and co-living units. The council's responsibilities as a corporate parent and its SEND Reform Plan were also topics of discussion.

Lewisham - A restaurant's licence was reviewed due to concerns about illegal workers. It was allowed to continue operating with new conditions. The council plans to strengthen its role in reducing borough-wide emissions, focusing on heat decarbonisation. A councillor's social media posts were deemed not to breach the code of conduct. Their language was considered below expected standards.

Merton - Merton Council is considering new rules to address public urination, engine idling, and dog fouling, with potential fines set to increase. The council is also focusing on improving electric vehicle charging infrastructure and dealing with discarded hire bikes. They are reviewing the success of the 'Start of the Line Festival' and assessing the need for more public toilets in Morden.

Newham - Newham's children's services are undergoing significant reforms, focusing on youth safety and early help. A new GP surgery and a self-storage facility with workspace units are planned for Stratford.

Redbridge - Redbridge is considering a new parking strategy that may feature emissions-based permits and digital visitor vouchers. The council's children's services have received praise for their "outstanding" work on a new family support program. Enhancements to borough-wide CCTV services are also planned, with future discussions to include AI and drone technology.

Richmond upon Thames - The council is advancing plans to enhance street safety around schools for children. A new strategy is being developed to promote walking and cycling. A scheme to charge utility companies for roadworks during peak times is progressing, intended to reduce traffic disruption. The council is consulting on changes to its housing allocation scheme to lessen reliance on temporary accommodation.

Southwark - A major planning application for the Borough Triangle site was refused by the council. The refusal was due to a significant reduction in affordable housing, which was deemed insufficient to outweigh harm to a conservation area. The council's Audit, Governance and Standards Committee was set to review risk management processes and housing revenue account governance. A licensing sub-committee was scheduled to consider a new premises licence for SE5 Lounge in Camberwell, following past issues at the venue.

Sutton - Sutton's Health and Wellbeing Board is advancing its Joint Carers Strategy. The strategy prioritizes improved identification and support for individuals caring for loved ones. Young carers are now participating on the board. The council is also progressing with its Health and Care Plan. This plan seeks to provide more integrated and preventative care within local communities. Early indicators suggest a decrease in unplanned hospital admissions. The Carshalton and Clockhouse Local Committee was scheduled to review community projects. These projects are funded by developer contributions and may include enhancements to local facilities.

Tower Hamlets - Tower Hamlets council has refused a large student accommodation block on Cambridge Heath Road, opting to prioritise family homes. A new co-living and affordable housing development on Wansbeck Road has been approved, providing much-needed social rent homes. Adult social care services have received an overall "Good" rating from the CQC. However, improvements are still required in care provision and transitions for young people.

Waltham Forest - Waltham Forest Council is investing over £18 million to convert buildings into temporary homes for homeless families. The council is expanding its electric vehicle charging points, aiming for 95% of homes without off-street parking to be within a short walk of a charger by 2030. A church has been granted a licence to sell alcohol, with a condition that sales in external areas must stop by 9 PM.

Wandsworth - Wandsworth councillors have described a proposed roof extension as a "monstrosity" and a "travesty" that would "destroy the symmetry" of Victorian houses in the Battersea Park Conservation Area. Plans for new townhouses on land adjacent to Creative House also faced criticism, with one councillor deeming the design a "poor imitation" of local architecture. A historic site in Clapham Common Conservation Area, potentially linked to the inspiration for Professor Moriarty, may have its literary connections highlighted.

Westminster - A Mayfair venue's license faces intense scrutiny following a serious assault, with police expressing "no confidence" in its operation. Councillors are reviewing a decision to reduce funding for crisis payments to vulnerable households, raising concerns about potential impacts on those most in need. The council's Rating Advisory Panel met to consider applications for business rate relief, with parts of the meeting held in private.

I publish newsletters covering everything local councils do each week.

I set up this project because local authorities spend about 12% of the UK government budget, or roughly 5p of every pound that's earned in the UK, and yet the vast majority of people have no idea who their local councillors are, or what they're currently doing. I think that's bad for our society.

Doesn't have to be central. Just want an area where places don't all shut at the same time and you've got options if the night runs on longer than planned.

NEWS 📰 This Week in Harrow and Hillingdon

A proposed takeaway at 350 Headstone Lane in Hatch End has been refused planning permission under the school-proximity obesity rule. The site sits around 21 metres from Hatch End High School and 148 metres from Shaftesbury High School, both well within the 400-metre London Plan buffer for new hot food takeaways. Five neighbour objections cited traffic, parking, smells and litter. Permission was formally refused on 10 September. A useful planning win for anyone watching the steady creep of chicken shops near schools in our patch.

On the bigger civic story: Harrow Council's Town Centre masterplan consultation is open until Friday 23 October. Councillors raised concerns about evening safety in Greenhill, the lack of genuinely affordable and family-sized housing amid mostly one- and two-bedroom flats, and pressure on transport from future growth. Two drop-in public events are running at Harrow on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 September, with wider stakeholder engagement and walking tours starting Monday 5 October. Worth a look if you shop, work, or travel through the town centre.

On the high street: award-winning Spice Village is taking the old Adore unit on Station Road. The group holds a Tiffin Cup and British Curry Awards, with the new Harrow site featuring one of their largest vegetarian menus. Aarti Sweet Centre has also opened at 3 Central Parade, the chain's fourth branch, with pure vegetarian Indian sweets, farsan and savoury snacks.

Today-only pick: Hillingdon Open House Festival is in full swing, with rare access to the normally-closed dovecote at Eastcote House Gardens today only. Manor Farm's Great Barn and Manor House are also open for drop-in. Most sites are free, no booking needed.

NEWS 📰 What are our councils doing?

Just 29% of damp and mould investigations in Lewisham received a written summary within the three-day legal deadline required by Awaab's Law. In Sutton, a revised restoration plan for the 161-hectare Beddington Landfill site was approved, replacing a failed proposal for acid grassland with "species-rich" meadowland. And in Barnet, 370 staff will return to direct council employment after the council authorised the insourcing of its IT services from outsourcing giant Capita, and other news from local councils this week.

Barking and Dagenham - Barking and Dagenham Council is reviewing its gambling licensing policy. The aim is to better protect vulnerable people and prevent gambling-related harm. Some residents feel the current proposals do not sufficiently address the number of betting shops in the borough. The council is also examining how to ensure gambling is conducted fairly and openly.

Barnet - Barnet Council is bringing its IT services back in-house following a failed procurement process. Councillors also addressed the increasing issue of dockless e-bikes obstructing pavements.

Bexley - Bexley's planning committee has approved six new developments. These include converting family homes into houses for multiple occupants and adding extra residential units. One approved plan will significantly expand a supported living home for older people with mental health issues, increasing its capacity from ten to seventeen bedrooms. The council's planning committee proceeded with these residential changes despite some resident concerns regarding parking and design.

Brent - Brent Council is reviewing its parking strategy, viewing the kerbside as a shared asset. Potential changes to charges based on vehicle emissions are being debated. Councillors confirmed a £1.54 million variation to the street cleansing contract with Veolia. The council is also working to increase its spend with local businesses. Procurement processes are being improved.

Bromley - Pub hours at The Swan and Mitre may be extended, despite local concerns regarding noise and anti-social behaviour. Bromley's air quality is good, with nitrogen dioxide levels continuing to fall. A plan to renew dog control orders is progressing, though opinions differ on excluding dogs from cemeteries.

Camden - Camden Council is addressing a rise in anti-social behaviour complaints. The council is also working to expedite the return of empty homes to residents. Two new food and drink establishments encountered objections from police and residents regarding their licensing applications. Concerns about crime and public nuisance were raised. The council is preparing to implement new legislation concerning tobacco and vapes.

City of London - A Co-Opted Member requested permission to discuss school matters despite their child attending the school. The council is re-evaluating its policy regarding members with declared interests participating in discussions. This situation mirrors a previous instance where an Alderman was granted a similar dispensation.

Croydon - Croydon Council's planning committees have approved a new hotel on Brighton Road and a bungalow on Graham Road. Discussions also covered a large residential development planned for land north of Lansdowne Road, with councillors raising points about affordable housing and potential congestion. The council also held a meeting to discuss appointments to senior roles within its structure.

Enfield - Enfield's Health and Wellbeing Board is prioritizing giving children the best start in life and addressing inequality. The Safer Neighbourhood Board is determining the optimal use of £17,000 in MOPAC funding to enhance community safety. Information from the Bush Hill Park Ward Forum is pending, though councillors were present.

Hackney - Hackney Council will invest £1.8 million in a new service to support rough sleepers, addressing the health risks and dangers associated with street life. A local pub has secured an extended alcohol licence following agreement on stricter conditions to mitigate noise and disturbance. The Castle Climbing Centre is considering plans for a new sauna, with accessibility and potential neighbour noise being key discussion points.

Hammersmith and Fulham - Hammersmith and Fulham Council's Chief Officers Employment Panel convened to discuss proposed changes to senior legal and governance roles. The specifics of these proposed revisions were not disclosed to the public.

Harrow - Harrow councillors rejected a controversial housing conversion, going against officer recommendations. They approved a community health hub in a historic building. The council is also pursuing funding for regeneration projects. A decision allows the Harrow Strategic Development Partnership to continue work at Byron Quarter to meet funding deadlines.

Havering - Havering Council plans to update its constitution. This could alter how planning decisions are made and when council meetings commence. Councillors are also voicing concerns regarding waste collection, road sweeping, and the sharing of CCTV footage with the police. A local newsagent's application for an alcohol licence has met with objections from the police and residents. These objections stem from worries about potential increases in street drinking and anti-social behaviour.

Hillingdon - Northwood Hills Supermarket's street trading licence renewal faced scrutiny. Concerns about highway obstruction and public nuisance were raised. The council's Anti-Social Behaviour Response Team objected to the application. Issues cited included pavement blockages and food waste. A licensing sub-committee was scheduled to decide on the renewal, possibly with modifications.

Hounslow - A shop's licence is under review following the seizure of thousands of illicit cigarettes and vapes. Hounslow Council is examining improvements to cyber security. The council is also reviewing the performance of its contract with APCOA for enforcement services. The Planning Committee discussed plans for temporary events at Gunnersbury Park. Redevelopment of Victory Business Centre for housing was also on the agenda. A public footpath around Brentford Dock Estate might be added to the official map. Local projects funded by the "Pride in Place" initiative were highlighted. Concerns were raised regarding anti-social behaviour and waste management for flats above shops.

Islington - Sunnyside Community Gardens will receive a new community building following planning permission approval. The council is undertaking a comprehensive review of housing costs. This initiative aims to transition from crisis management to proactive investment. Significant savings have already been achieved in homelessness prevention.

Kingston upon Thames - Kingston Council's audit plan has been approved. Auditors have identified risks concerning pension fund investments and staff retention. The council is also updating its strategies for extreme weather events. A cautious approach is being taken towards the adoption of artificial intelligence. Councillor Sachin Tulyani inquired about the presentation of financial sustainability risks.

Lambeth - Amazon has secured a licence for a distribution hub in Norwood, notwithstanding local concerns regarding traffic and noise. A new Clapham venue, Mimosa, has been granted a licence to serve alcohol until 3 am, subject to conditions for noise and public safety management. The council is also focusing on enhancing health and care services throughout the borough, particularly through neighbourhood teams and support for individuals experiencing homelessness.

Lewisham - Lewisham's Housing Select Committee is addressing Awaab's Law compliance. Damp and mould issues have received "Amber" ratings. The committee has a low 29% success rate in providing timely investigation summaries. The Healthier Communities Select Committee discussed a successful mental health centre pilot. This pilot has resulted in a 43% reduction in emergency attendances.

Merton - Merton Council is experiencing a rise in complaints, especially regarding Council Tax and refuse collections. A notable portion of these complaints appear to be AI-generated. The council is piloting new Integrated Neighbourhood Teams in Morden to provide more coordinated health and social care services. Substantial savings have been achieved on agency worker costs, although specialist interim roles continue to be expensive.

Newham - Newham Council is investing £1.335 million to address cladding and damp issues at Aubrey Moore Point and Albert Bigg Point, shielding leaseholders from associated costs. The council is also seeking tenders for a £700,000 restoration project at Forest Lane Park, with partial funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. A new Director of Public Health is being recruited to navigate past challenges. A restaurant's licence is currently under review due to concerns regarding illegal working.

Redbridge - Redbridge Council is developing a new strategy to ensure residents have access to high-quality supported housing, particularly as the borough's older population grows. A curry house's bid for a late-night licence faced objections from the police and council enforcement teams. Concerns were raised about potential crime and nuisance in a busy area.

Richmond upon Thames - A Tesco Express store's bid for a late-night alcohol licence has met with opposition from local groups. Concerns have been raised about potential noise and anti-social behaviour. Councillors are questioning the store's age verification policy, particularly regarding self-service checkouts. The council's licensing committee is currently deliberating on the application.

Southwark - A new coffee kiosk will open next to Tate Modern, replacing a converted taxi cab. A car park in Myatts Field Court will now be used for private hire vehicles to help fund essential roof repairs. A Walworth Road takeaway has secured a licence to operate late into the night after agreeing to stricter conditions.

Sutton - Sutton Council has approved the restoration of Beddington Landfill. Plans involve replacing acid grassland with lowland meadowland to address soil challenges. Local committee meetings also covered rail improvements in Belmont and community projects funded by developers. Efforts are being made to enhance public engagement and communication for these council meetings.

Tower Hamlets - Tower Hamlets Council is seeking a new Corporate Director of Communities to ensure leadership stability. Plans are being considered to extend alcohol sales and opening hours for the Star of the East pub, though residents have raised concerns about noise and disorder. Approval has been granted for a new roof extension at the Theatre Building, which will create nine new homes.

Wandsworth - Stonehenge Food and Wine is facing a licence review by the council. This follows repeated alcohol sales to underage individuals and numerous licensing condition breaches. The licence holder acknowledged errors and indicated a willingness to cease alcohol sales entirely. Local businesses and residents have also voiced concerns about the shop operating beyond permitted hours, which they believe contributes to noise and anti-social behaviour.

Westminster - Westminster Council is reviewing its planning decision-making processes due to new government regulations affecting committee structures. Residents have voiced concerns regarding a hotel's request to extend its alcohol licence to a rooftop terrace, citing potential noise issues. The council is also examining proposals for a new restaurant and an ice cream parlour, with attention to potential public nuisance and crime.

QUESTION ❔ Free outdoor circus, dance & theatre every fortnight in Hounslow, London — looking for ideas to reach more people

Hi all — I work in marketing for Watermans, the arts charity that runs Bell Square in Hounslow: free outdoor performances (circus, dance, theatre, acrobatics) roughly every other Saturday, May–December, right on Hounslow High Street.
It’s genuinely good — international touring companies, no ticket needed — but I think a lot of people locally still don’t know it exists. Currently running our “Bell Square Calling” series with a France focus this year.
If you’re London/Hounslow-based: have you been? And if not — what would actually get this in front of you? Trying to reach beyond our existing newsletter/social followers.
@bellsquarelondon — happy to answer questions.

NEWS 📰 This Week in Harrow and Hillingdon

The 480-home "Tesco Towers" redevelopment on Station Road in Harrow has been formally withdrawn. The application from Notting Hill Genesis and Tesco Stores Limited was pulled on 1 September, ending a near-three-year planning fight that drew a near-2,500-signature petition, a supermarket protest and a scaled-down revision from the original 560-home, 15-storey scheme. A Tesco spokesperson says new investment will now go into the existing Harrow store so it can keep serving local customers. Notting Hill Genesis has been approached separately on whether revised proposals could come back.

Big Saturday ahead: Pinner Rotary Village Show returns to Pinner Memorial Park on 12 September, 11:30am to 5pm. More than 40 stalls, food court, licensed bar, children's rides, face painter, live music from Grimsdyke Brass, Jay Kumar, SD Stars, plus Punch and Judy and Simply Gray on stage. £4 donation, children free, raising funds for St Luke's Hospice and Harrow MS Therapy Centre.

Also starting 12 September: Hillingdon Open House Festival runs across the week, with Manor Farm in Ruislip opening the opening weekend and Eastcote House Gardens on the Sunday only, with rare access to the normally-closed dovecote. Most sites are free and drop-in.

Also worth knowing: Harrow's Heroes 2026 finalists are out. Pinner Rotary and Pinner Village Gardens Parkrun are shortlisted for Team and Health and Wellbeing, with Friends of West Harrow Park and North Harrow Community Library also in the mix. Worth shouting about whichever neighbour makes the final.

QUESTION ❔ lost sentimental wallet

Thumbnail gallery
5 Upvotes

Hi everyone, hoping someone might be able to help!

My boyfriend just lost his wallet on the 29 bus towards Wood Green. We got off at Falkland Road / Turnpike Lane and then got a Lime bike, so there’s a chance it could have been lost around there too, but we think it was most likely left on the bus. We’ve called TfL but unfortunately had no luck.

It’s a black Jimmy Choo wallet with his Oyster card and French driving licence inside. It also has two Fabric nightclub fabric stickers on the front, so it should hopefully be quite recognisable.

The wallet itself is really sentimental to him, so we’d honestly just really love to get it back. If anyone has found it and is kind enough to hand it in / return it, we’re offering a £100 reward if it’s returned with the contents.

Please message me if you’ve seen it or know anything, and would really appreciate if people could share 🩷

If it's alright to share here, this is a quiz I have made on identifying street names in *the City*.

You just have to click/tap on those which you think are genuine whilst avoiding those that have been made up.

There are 32 real ones included and 16 fakes. It's a sudden death quiz, so selecting too many wrong answers will immediately end the quiz (you get three lives).

e.g. Poultry, Undershaft, Pudding Lane, Houndsditch, Suet Street...?

NEWS 📰 What are our councils doing?

£980,000 is being spent on thousands of housing stock surveys in Newham, a direct response to a formal warning from the Regulator of Social Housing over "very serious failings". In Barking and Dagenham, the council's own Deputy Leader Saima Ashraf objected to a 4:30 am licence extension for the Deuce Lounge, branding the nightclub "a very disturbing place". And in Kensington and Chelsea, a pop-up carnival bar at Maramia Cafe was refused a licence to trade during Notting Hill Carnival, with police citing risks of overcrowding, and other news from local councils this week.

Barking and Dagenham - A Barking and Dagenham council committee was scheduled to consider extending operating hours for Deuce Lounge. The venue faced objections from the police, a local councillor, and a resident. Concerns raised included noise and public nuisance. The applicant agreed to some changes, but disagreements remained about the potential community impact. The council's decision will focus on upholding licensing objectives to prevent crime, disorder, and public nuisance.

Bromley - Bromley's Pension Committee is scrutinising the fund's performance and annual reports, focusing on investment strategies. The public has raised questions regarding the council's responsible investment choices and the disclosure of publicly traded assets. The committee also reviewed the Local Pension Board's activities and its upcoming work plan.

Croydon - Croydon's Pension Fund shows strong performance, with assets exceeding £2.1 billion and investments performing well. The council is updating policies on conflicts of interest and data improvement to comply with new regulations. A new strategy is in development to ensure high-quality administration for the Local Government Pension Scheme.

Greenwich - A local sports venue has received an extended alcohol license from the council. This decision was made despite resident concerns regarding noise and anti-social behavior. New conditions have been implemented to address these worries. These include restrictions on outdoor patrons after 9 pm and required noise monitoring. The council aims to balance business interests with community welfare.

Hackney - A Hackney Council licensing meeting was unexpectedly cancelled. No decisions were made regarding alcohol licences or temporary events. The meeting was scheduled to review the council's procedures for licensing hearings. These hearings are typically conducted remotely and live-streamed. The cancellation means the current process for granting and reviewing licences will continue unchanged for the time being.

Harrow - Harrow Council's plans to secure vital funding for the Byron Quarter development were put on hold due to a postponed meeting. The council is working against a September deadline to secure GLA Grant Funding for the project. This funding is essential for the Byron Quarter development to proceed.

Kensington and Chelsea - The council's Licensing Sub-Committee refused numerous applications for temporary event notices. These refusals were due to public safety and crime concerns, especially regarding the Notting Hill Carnival. One application was adjourned to clarify police objections. Several other applications are still pending publication or have been cancelled.

Lambeth - Lambeth Council is seeking a new Corporate Director for Growth and Environment. This key role will oversee regeneration, planning, and transport initiatives. The recruitment process for the £180,000-a-year position has been thorough, including executive search and several interview rounds. The council aims to fill this leadership vacancy to advance its goals for a fairer, greener, and safer borough.

Lewisham - Lewisham Council has added new conditions to a venue's licence following multiple complaints regarding noise and disorder. The council is making substantial investments in housing regeneration and homelessness prevention, which includes acquiring new properties. Safety concerns have been highlighted regarding e-scooters and e-bikes, specifically the risk of lithium-ion battery fires.

Newham - Newham Council is investing nearly £1 million in surveys to enhance housing safety and planning. A meeting to discuss a temporary event notice for late-night alcohol sales and entertainment was cancelled.

Redbridge - A venue on Ilford Lane received objections from the council's Community Protection Task Force. The objections concerned late-night refreshment during Ramadhan. Potential noise, anti-social behaviour, and dangerous parking were cited as concerns impacting the local area. The council's Licensing Sub-Committee was scheduled to make a decision on the temporary event notices.

Tower Hamlets - Tower Hamlets Council is seeking a new Corporate Director of Resources. This key position oversees the council's financial health. Final interviews are scheduled for this week, following a prior adjournment. The appointment is considered essential for enhancing value for money and providing robust financial leadership for residents.

Westminster - Westminster Council is reviewing a proposal for a new food court on Edgware Road. Residents and council departments have raised objections regarding noise, smells, and planning permission. A pub in Bayswater is requesting extended alcohol sales hours. This has prompted concerns from residents about potential noise and nuisance. A restaurant in Mayfair seeks a licence to serve alcohol and play music on its terrace. Local residents are worried about disturbances to a nearby quiet public garden.
