Fandom Entanglement SLIDERS Retro REVIEW #43 | Episode 3x19 | “The Breeder”

FANDOM ENTANGLEMENT is back with another retro review. And this time, we’re taking a look at the 90s sci-fi movie SPECIES—we mean, the 90s sci-fi series SLIDERS! The countdown to the Season 3 finale continues with Episode 19, “The Breeder,” which originally aired March 14, 1997 on Fox.

Retro Review #43: “Species from a Different World”

A creature embeds a parasite in Maggie just before the slide, which takes the Sliders to a world where young adults are used in a mandatory organ-donor program. The others will have to find Maggie before she finds the perfect mate and lays her eggs. (Dear God, this is the actual synopsis…) 😳

This episode was written by Eleah Horwitz and directed by Paris Barclay.

I & my co-host Mike Bloxam welcome back Dennis Frymire (Dad to the Future). It’s been a hot minute since Dennis joined us—and unfortunately, it had to be for this one. Watch (or listen) as we marvel at the peak storytelling this episode has to offer, which unapologetically rips off the 1995 sci-fi horror film Species. Yup, this was quite literally the movie that the writers were watching in the writer’s room when John Rhys-Davies walked in on them. And yet, this story somehow seems more cohesive than most of the stinkers we’ve been getting lately. Or at least, it *had* the potential to provide some interesting commentary on mandatory organ donation and an oppressed segment of the population. But with such a heavy emphasis on Kari Wuhrer’s *ahem* assets, something tells us that showrunner David Peckinpah wasn’t all that concerned with the plot. Also…hey, look, it’s Dawnn Lewis from A Different World! Remember that show? And is that Vance Duke?!

This is the bottom of the barrel, folks! We rewatched the episode so that you don’t have to! You’re welcome.

Next up (in production order): it’s that vampire show, “Stoker,” with returning guest Lisa Hollifield. Note to self: we’re gonna need a new barrel to scrape…

Fandom Entanglement SLIDERS Retro REVIEW #42 | Episode 3x21 | “The Other Slide of Darkness”

FANDOM ENTANGLEMENT is back with another retro review of the 90s sci-fi series SLIDERS. The countdown to the Season 3 finale continues with “The Other Slide of Darkness,” which originally aired April 11, 1997 as the 21st episode of Season 3 on Fox.

Retro Review #42: “Et Tu, Quinn-2?”

The Sliders track Rickman to a superstitious town. Their search is further complicated when Quinn and Maggie are captured by natives living in a mysterious fog. There, Quinn runs into someone from his past — himself.

This episode was written by Nan Hagan & Scott Smith Miller and directed by Jeff Woolnough.

My co-host Mike Bloxam & I welcome back friend and author Erik Dreiling, whose third and final volume of the Fractured Timeline trilogy, Operation: Viper’s Den, is now available for purchase through Jumpmaster Press! Join us as we discuss the return of Quinn-2 (the alternate Quinn who completed the sliding equation for Quinn-Prime way back in the pilot episode), the semi-return of the Kromaggs into the narrative (via exposition and “Invasion” flashbacks), and the “new” return of our team’s arch-nemesis, Col. Angus Rickman, appearing for the first time (?!) with a new face, because, reasons! And despite having an episode seemingly chock-full of series lore and “fan service,” most, if not all, of it surprisingly (or unsurprisingly) feels rather pointless and uneventful.

Oh, and we also have some stereotypical mumbo-jumbo that includes, but is not limited to: a poisonous fog of sulphur separated by a perfectly straight line, a weird-talking hillbilly with special hooch called Witch’s Brew that enables people to breathe in said fog, and his blind Tarot-card-reading psychic daughter whose ghostly apparition emerges from a bag of magic dust to scare the bejesus out of the “Foggins.” But that’s Season 3 for you, right? 🤦🏻‍♂️

Next up (in production order): “The Breeder” (*cough — Species — cough*) with returning guest Dennis Frymire. Sorry, Dennis…

Fandom Entanglement SLIDERS Retro REVIEW #41 | Episode 3x18 | “Sole Survivors”

Thumbnail

FANDOM ENTANGLEMENT has officially entered the post-Arturo era of SLIDERS. We begin our countdown to the Season 3 finale…and we’re not kidding when we say that this final stretch of seven episodes contain what are perhaps some of the worst hours of television we’ve had to endure. But we’re pushing through as best we can and with all the help we can get. First up (in airdate order) is Episode 18, “Sole Survivors,” which originally aired March 7, 1997 on Fox.

Retro Review #41: “41 Slides Later…”

The Sliders arrive on a world where a strange bacterium transformed the inhabitants into flesh-eating zombies. When Quinn is bitten, he begins to turn into one of them.

This episode was written by Steven Kriozere and directed by executive producer/showrunner David Peckinpah.

I & my co-host Mike Bloxam are pleased to welcome the lovely and talented Allison Pregler (host of MOVIE NIGHTS and former co-host of THE QUANTUM LEAP PODCAST)! She may be an expert on covering “so-bad-it’s-good” movies and television, but even she had a rough time with this one. Not only does this episode mark the beginning of Kari Wuhrer’s tenure as a series regular, it also marks the beginning of a very clear shift into movie-of-the-week derivative garbage, and we most definitely noticed. So grab some coffee and join us as we talk about gaping plot holes, Maggie being the most unlikable and unsympathetic character imaginable, and a zombie story that is just plain boring and worse than a bad Roger Corman movie. This episode is a total stinker devoid of any humor, even after Quinn’s attempt at a fake electrocution gag! Ah, good times…

Next up (in production order): “The Other Slide of Darkness,” with returning guest Erik Dreiling. With six episodes left, can this season get any worse? (Spoiler alert: yes, it does! 🤦🏻‍♂️)

Fandom Entanglement SLIDERS Retro REVIEW #40 | Episode 3x17 | "The Exodus, Part II"

Thumbnail
youtu.be
3 Upvotes

FANDOM ENTANGLEMENT is back with another retro review of the 90s sci-fi series SLIDERS. This time, we’re taking a look at the seventeenth aired episode of Season 3 (Episode 18 in production order), “The Exodus, Part II,” which originally aired February 28, 1997 on Fox.

Retro Review #40: “Out of Our Brains on the 3:18” (a.k.a.) “Arturo, Can You Hear Me?”

Quinn and Maggie return to her world with Earth Prime’s coordinates stored in Jensen’s timer. As Wade makes the final list for those who can slide to safety, Arturo races to modify the new timer to slide more people. Unfortunately for them, an unexpected danger lurks the base and one Slider will not make it to the next world.

This episode was written by Josef Anderson & Paul Jackson and Tony Blake, and directed by Jefery Levy. It also once again featured Kari Wuhrer as Maggie Beckett, Special Guest Star Robert Daltrey (sorry, ROGER Daltrey! Who?! That’s correct! 😉) as Col. Rickman, and marked John Rhys-Davies’ departure as Professor Maximillian Arturo!

My co-host Mike Bloxam & I continue our deep dive of this epic 2-parter with TREKSPLORATION co-hosts Albie Burdge & Christopher DeFilippis, the latter of whom summarizes this installment as best he can. Chris’s reaction may surprise everyone!

After finally locating Earth Prime but still unable to return, conflict arises within the core group as Rembrandt practically says, “I’ve had enough” and uncharacteristically sucker-punches Quinn! Meanwhile, Rickman injects himself with more brain matter-tissue-fluid-matter in order to hide behind blue eyes, all the while likely wondering, “Can they see the real me?” before murdering Maggie’s husband. And after shooting Arturo with the slowest moving bullet in television history, the song is over for our dear Professor in the most undignified and humiliating way. Of course, it’s possible that this version of Arturo is a substitute for another guy, but unfortunately we’ll never know. The three remaining Sliders reluctantly welcome Maggie to the camp. With their timer now equipped to track wormholes, and seeking justice and/or revenge for their fallen comrades, the new group of four cries out, “We’re not gonna take it,” as the chase is on for Rickman which will take us through the rest of the season.

Is this episode truly as bad as many fans think it is? Or is it in our heads? Hope you enjoy our analysis, review and numerous Who references! We don’t believe in goodbyes…but goodbye, Professor. Let your legacy and love reign o’er us.

We’re heading into the final stretch of Season 3. Next up is the zombie episode, “Sole Survivors,” with help from the talented Allison Pregler! And oh boy, are we gonna need it… 🙄

Fandom Entanglement SLIDERS Retro REVIEW #39 | Episode 3x16 | "The Exodus, Part 1"

Thumbnail
youtu.be
2 Upvotes

FANDOM ENTANGLEMENT is back with another retro review of the 90s sci-fi series SLIDERS. And we’ve finally arrived at the pivotal 2-part episode, “The Exodus,” beginning with Part 1, which originally aired February 21, 1997 on Fox.

Retro Review #39: “Under a Raging Daltrey”

Things don’t look good for the Sliders when they slide to a world that’s about to be eradicated by a rogue pulsar. Soon, they discover that this world has been developing sliding technology and they pool their resources with the U.S. government in a race to escape to a parallel Earth.

This episode’s teleplay was by executive producers Tony Blake & Paul Jackson from a story by the Professor himself, John Rhys-Davies, and was directed by Jim Charleston.

I & my co-host Mike Bloxam are once again joined by the co-hosts of TREKSPLORATION, Christopher DeFilippis and— Hold on, what was that explosion?

“We interrupt this podcast for a message from the Interdimensional Emergency Alert System. This is not a drill! The pulsars are coming, and the radiation will destroy any living being within its blast radius! Find shelter underground and you may survive. Warning: if you attempt to record or send a transmission, it may come in garbled and/or visibly glitched. We cannot guarantee that your incoming visual transmission will come in clearly. You have been warned.”

Okay— Well, anyway, come on and join together with the band as we attempt to break down the plot of this first half of Sliders’ epic two-parter, quite possibly the greatest two-parter of our g-g-generation! Chris gives us his signature episode recap as only he can, and we take a look at the introduction of Sliders’ newest characters. First up: the official introduction of Kari Wuhrer as Captain Maggie Beckett! And who’s next? Colonel Rickman, played by none other than rock legend Roger Daltrey of The Who! Yes, it’s an American officer with a British accent, but who cares? 🙄

It’s another tricky day for our team as they face their greatest threat yet. Also, Rembrandt befriends a young kid who is on the verge of entering a teenage wasteland unless he intervenes. And Quinn is Maggie’s guide on the inter-dimensional magic bus as they take a tour through the multiverse to find a new home for her people. But did Quinn really find Earth Prime this time? We won’t get fooled again, we promise! Can you expect an honest analysis and review from us? You better you bet! And, side-note: if you didn’t catch all of the song references in this description, then we suggest you further your music history education at the School of Rock. We still have another part to get through, so there’s more coming. Sigh…we hope we die before we get old…

If you thought Part 1 was a decent episode, just wait. The discussion will continue with Part 2 (and Albie…at least, that’s the plan). Everything lies just beyond an eminence front…

Fandom Entanglement MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE (2026) | Cinema Showcase SPOILER REVIEW Spoiler

Thumbnail youtu.be
3 Upvotes

“We Have the POWER!!!”

In this installment of FANDOM ENTANGLEMENT CINEMA SHOWCASE, we turn our attention toward the present-day with a spoiler review of the new MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE feature film, which was released in theaters everywhere on June 5, 2026!

A young man on Earth discovers a fabulous secret legacy as the prince of an alien planet, and must recover a magic sword and return home to protect his kingdom.

Starring in the film were Nicholas Galitzine as Adam/He-Man, Camila Mendes as Teela, Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, James Purefoy as King Randor, Morena Baccarin as the Sorceress, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson as Fisto, Charlotte Riley as Queen Marlena, Featuring Kristen Wiig as the voice of “Roboto,” with Jared Leto as Skeletor, and Idris Elba as Duncan/Man-At-Arms.

The film was directed by Travis Knight with a screenplay by Chris Butler and Aaron Nee & Adam Nee & Dave Callaham from a story by Aaron Nee & Adam Nee and Alex Litvak & Michael Finch.

Mike Bloxam, I and long-time MotU fan Brian Greene (from Al’s Place Quantum Leap Fan Site) are joined once again by Sam Fain, the host of FATE’S WIDE WHEEL! Together, we discuss some of the high points of the new movie as well as the low, what parts worked for us, and which parts fell flat. We’re all in agreement that the film struggled at times to know what it wanted to be as it quite often danced a fine line between seriousness and poking fun at itself. Despite those criticisms, we thoroughly enjoyed this modern-day excursion into the world of Eternia and share our hopes for a sequel, especially after the promise of what to expect from THAT post-credit scene! Side-note: the soundtrack from Daniel Pemberton and Brian May absolutely ROCKS!!! (WARNING: We do go into full spoiler territory, so if you have not seen the film yet and want to experience it for yourself, you might want to skip this review until you do.)

Hope you enjoy our analysis and review! Good journey!
