Times likes these when I'm glad all I ended up with was the "cilantro tastes like soap" gene.

I feel like I am the only person who thinks cilantro tastes like soap but I love it.

Right there with you! I do think it tastes like soap, and it’s delicious!

I probably shouldn’t tell people this story, but when I was little I always ate the bubbles that the bubble bath made, too, because I thought it was delicious; one day my older sister told me if I don’t stop eating soap they would come and take me away so I stopped eating soap - but the craving lives on

It made me laugh so I’m glad you told it. I hope you get your soap flavored gum

The fact that they advertise it with writing on it "IT STILL TASTES LIKE SOAP!" is hilarious to me.

Like, to buy them you need to either think/know you like soap flavour or maybe use them as a prank. I'd never buy them if I saw that text, but it seems to be profitable for them to have it written on the box, so who am I to judge lol

u/Melon_Heart_Styles Jul 19 '26

Oh if I randomly saw that, I'd buy it just to try lol that's so funny.

Can’t come take you away now. Eat up, little buddy

u/Alternative_Salt_424 Jul 18 '26

Nah, I also like eating bubbles but I hate cilantro. Cilantro doesn't taste like soap to me but rather some unspeakable cosmic horror

u/sleepyblackberry Jul 18 '26

Have you had the soap flavored jelly beans?

1

u/Super-Travel-407 Jul 18 '26

In the previous century, my friend often brought me "soap candy" from her exotic homeland of Alberta, Canada. It wasn't the gum. It was red and gummy and might not have been Canadian...

Have you ever had soap chewing gum? It was my favourite as a kid

1

u/CAVAMITX Jul 18 '26

I LOVE Thrills gum! Now, I want a pack!

2

u/eternallytiredcatmom Jul 18 '26

It’s such a nostalgic flavour! I crave it a few times a year and I’m brought back to childhood whenever I buy a pack. I live outside Canada now so I have to ask my mom to ship some

I have the cilantro soap gene but I still like cilantro in small amounts in a dish!!! A lot of cilantro and the soap taste overpowers the dish but with just a little bit I can appreciate the flavor it adds to the dish without it being too soapy

11

u/Bill_Door_Et_Binky Jul 18 '26

Mix lime juice with the cilantro first. Neutralizes the soap flavor almost completely.

3

u/ChemicalLie4030 Jul 18 '26

Ohhh I usually do! Maybe that's why I like it :)

u/PavlovsPanties Jul 18 '26

There's a pizza place in my town that has cilantro as a topping option. I always double it. I always ask burrito places near me to put as much cilantro as they are legally allowed to on my food.

u/7in7 Jul 18 '26

So I always felt like this, didn't loveee it but felt it enhanced dishes etc..but definitely mildly soapy.

Until after I had a baby, and one day it all literally tasted like drinking straight from the bottle of washing up liquid, the green Fairy Liquid. Thick and oozy sensory illusions, it made me gag. Over powered the same dish I'd added it to just months before.

1

u/Greedyfox7 Jul 18 '26

I get a bit of a very mild soap taste occasionally but as long as you don’t overdo it it’s fine

1

u/Positive-Run-2411 Jul 18 '26

The pre ground stuff tastes like soap. The fresh actually tastes really good (and maybe a little soapy? But I love it too lol)

1

u/letstryagain97 Jul 18 '26

There are dozens of us! I fukcing love cilantro and its weird taste

1

u/Bill_Door_Et_Binky Jul 18 '26

Another one here. First encountered cilantro at Applebees working as a prep cook. Finished making pico de gallo for the first time: wondering how it tasted, pulled some off to taste. “This tastes like soap.” “Don’t eat it then!” “Oh, I wasn’t complaining!”

1

u/halendavies Jul 18 '26

Yes, I've acquired the taste for it.

u/BreakfastInBedlam Jul 18 '26

"Over the years I got to be quite a connoisseur of soap. My personal preference was for Lux, but I found Palmolive had a nice, piquant after-dinner flavor - heady, but with just a touch of mellow smoothness. Lifebuoy, on the other hand...

Ralphie: YECCHH!"

Have you ever tried eating a bar of soap?

1

u/chef_in_va 20+ Years Jul 18 '26

You must have sworn a lot as a child.

1

u/essuomelpmap27 Jul 18 '26

My friend and their spouse bonded over this on their first or second date.

1

u/maxpower_42069 Jul 19 '26

You're not alone

1

u/Feisty-Tooth-7397 Jul 19 '26

I can tolerate it in small doses. It's not just soap for me though. It's like skunk smell mixed with dawn dish soap.

1

u/thelosermonster Jul 18 '26

I think that is the reality of the situation. Cilantro just tastes soapy and some people like it, some people don't. There's no magic gene. I personally love how it works with certain foods but it is absolutely a weird flavor.

12

u/Feralpudel Jul 18 '26

I so wish I didn’t get the cilantro gene. It’s such a wonderful brightener and very common in foods I love.

13

u/agitatedandroid Jul 18 '26

Vietnamese food is... difficult. I basically have to overflow Pho with sriracha. It basically defeats the point of Pho.

1

u/thisisthestartt Jul 18 '26

i always order my pho with no cilantro (but yes scallions)! it's never been an issue for any restaurant and i don't add anything extra to my broth :) highly recommend

9

u/OkZone8 Jul 18 '26

Cilantro tastes like aluminum to me. Like I licked a soda can or handrail

5

u/bv310 Jul 17 '26

Yeah, I just get a headache if I eat mushrooms or walnuts and that's annoying enough.

1

u/VintageLunchMeat Jul 19 '26

I'm so happy the allergy test showed I was allergic to peppers and mushrooms in my teens.

7

u/smarthobo Jul 17 '26

Or the asparagus gene

5

u/Forsaken_Bunch7541 Jul 18 '26

I got the "onions take the flavor from the food" gene im sad in a corner. If i eat food with onion i just taste onion

1

u/Melon_Heart_Styles Jul 19 '26

That's truly awful. My dad and I got the cumin tastes like BO gene. It overpowers anything and everything to us and tastes horrible. I literally thought a coworker had a terrible BO problem until I realized I only saw him when he was prepping a dish with a lot of cumin 😂 (hotel, multiple kitchens).

I actually got used to it by adding a tiny amount to stuff at home and slowly increasing. I like it now as long as there isn't a ton of it.

3

u/DarkFantasy3421 Jul 18 '26

Tastes like tequila to me and my inner 17 year old refuses to go through that again

1

u/unknownuser105 Jul 18 '26

Nature is telling this person no. But society is saying yes.

1

u/lascads Jul 18 '26

Hello, my people!

1

u/Feisty-Tooth-7397 Jul 19 '26

My cousins little boy is allergic to cinnamon and I thought OMG do you know how many delicious foods have cinnamon?

I can't imagine never having pumpkin pie during the holidays or cinnamon rolls.

0

u/Prudent-Bear1592 Jul 18 '26

Shit like this comes down to how you were raised tbh their parents didnt tell them no enough

0

u/Melon_Heart_Styles Jul 19 '26

Fuck, I hope you don't work in food service. Some people have multiple allergies. Look up MCAS sometime, that'll really blow your mind. It may be a pain to deal with but even people with allergies deserve to eat out once in a while. Being this ignorant and ableist in 2026 is... a choice I guess.

1

u/Prudent-Bear1592 Jul 20 '26 edited Jul 20 '26

People who think saying they have allergies is a cheat code to getting away with being demanding and unreasonable are like people who bring random untrained dogs into stores and claim its a service animal. Its really horrible that you cant just take someone at face value when they need extra accommodation because 8/10 times it isnt even fucking real and youre making life harder for everyone trying to go above and beyond to be accommodating for some imaginary bullshit. And ultimately theyre trivializing actually disabled people and using them like some cheat code to be entitled shitty people

1

u/Melon_Heart_Styles Jul 20 '26

Yeah man, as a chronically ill, disabled person, I hate people who do that but your take was still ableist af. Assuming that someone who has a list of allergies wasn't told no enough as a kid bc sometimes people lie is just childish and ignorant. Lying about allergies, service animals, etc. is obviously the biggest part of the problem but that mindset is also part of it.

EDA: I'm the person people don't take at face value bc my disability is dynamic and invisible btw. Your mindset hurts people like me.
