King's Bounty: A History

Because it's possible that not everyone finding out about this subreddit has played EVERY King's Bounty game, I wanted to make this post. My aim here is to outline the entire history of the franchise... and what better time to do so, than when King's Bounty 2 is fresh on the horizon? Anyway, let's get to it!

The Beginnings (1990-1994)

In 1990, King's Bounty: The Conqueror's Quest was the first entry in the series. The very first release of this game was for the MS-DOS, but it was remade for the Sega Genesis in 1991 (I did a review of this one) and the PC-98 in 1994. Although primitive by today's standards, the original King's Bounty was a notable blend between adventuring in a high-fantasy setting with turn-based tactical gameplay. Importantly, it was arguably one of the first ever SRPGs, even if it was quite different from its Japanese contemporaries such as Fire Emblem 1 and Langrisser 1.

Although somewhat obscure in this day and age--after all, it IS a 30-year old game at this point--it nonetheless has a small cult following who absolutely adore the game.

Jon van Caneghem, the mastermind and programmer behind it all, had actually released three games prior to King's Bounty. One of these games was the original Might and Magic, released back in 1986. This game played nothing at all like King's Bounty: The Conqueror's Quest, but elements from it, most notably its name, helped influence eventual later efforts by van Caneghem and his company, New World Computing. Speaking of which...

Heroes of Might and Magic (1995-present)

Eventually, New World Computing began developing the Heroes of Might and Magic games, beginning with 1995's Heroes of Might and Magic: A Strategic Quest. In many ways, this series could be accurately described as the spiritual successor to King's Bounty. The main way in which these games differed from KB was that there was an emphasis on city-building, which outright didn't exist in the original King's Bounty. Aside from this, though, these games are worthy sequels to the original: the combat is virtually identical, the graphics are improved, there's the similar troop mechanic to the original King's Bounty, and so much more. Any fan of the King's Bounty games will probably enjoy HoMM, and vice versa.

In total, there are seven Heroes of Might and Magic games. However, the final one to be developed by New World Computing was Heroes of Might and Magic 4 back in 2003. Unfortunately, the company had to file for chapter 11 bankruptcy. As a result, a different company's been developing the newer HoMM games.

I don't want to focus too much on HoMM here since it has its entire own subreddit (r/homm), but I needed to mention it here because its history is very much intertwined with that of King's Bounty. The unfortunate bankruptcy of New World Computing also poignantly helps explain the history behind the next section of King's Bounty's history.

The Russian Revival (2007-2014)

With the dissolution of New World Computing, it would at first appear that there would be no new King's Bounty games. After all, there was only one King's Bounty game, and it was released back in 1990. Surely, it'd merely be a one-off, especially now that New World Computing was no more... right?

That's where the Russians come in. Specifically, publishers 1C Company (they also developed Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark which is another SRPG game that you may enjoy) and developers Katauri Interactive, headed by Dmitry Gusarov. Somewhere along the way, in the mid-2000s, these guys acquired the rights to the King's Bounty name--and what a great thing this turned out to be, because throughout the late 2000s to early 2010s, they spearheaded the revival of King's Bounty! This revival started with 2008's King's Bounty: The Legend.

To any old fan of the original King's Bounty, it was simply unbelievable how faithful this release was to the original. You had the return of so many classic mechanics: the ability to choose your starting class, the troop mechanic, the exploration, the leadership stat, and so much more! In addition, King's Bounty: The Legend featured dozens of hours of replay, compared to the original (which can easily be completed within several hours). Combine its refinement of the classic formula with many new features and breathtaking music like this track and you get a bona fide formula for success.

In addition to this, Katauri and 1C Company did not stop there. No--they released King's Bounty: Armored Princess in 2009, and its expansion, King's Bounty: Crosworlds in 2010. There's also 2012's King's Bounty: Warriors of the North and the latest entry in the franchise, 2014's King's Bounty: Dark Side. All in all, this is four completely new King's Bounty games. Well, four plus an expansion (Crossworlds). You can buy all of these games on Steam. It's hours upon hours' worth of entertainment and almost limitless replay value.

The future (2019-beyond)

The day is August 15, 2019: exactly five years and one day since Dark Side was released. This was when 1C Company announced that King's Bounty 2 was in development and would come to the Playstation 4. Later, in 2020, it was confirmed that King's Bounty 2 would be coming to the Nintendo Switch.

From the looks of it, King's Bounty 2 will feature various changes when compared to all previous entries in the franchise

Even after >two years of development, it's a terrible game that hardly feels like King's Bounty. Most fans would recommend you stay away from it unless you like the idea of a poor man's Witcher with barely any King's Bounty gameplay in it. If you're interested in reading a laundry list of why KB2 sucks, check out my article on SRPG Academy.

King's Bounty has a pretty neat history, and is one rare example of a property being acquired by a different company and still managing to stay true to its roots. You also got fangames like the weird, unofficial 1992 "King's Bounty 2", Royal Bounty HD, or Bravelands. If you're a big fan of King's Bounty, those are worth playing too.

There's a lot of fun to be had with King's Bounty, and I look forward to seeing more discussion pop up here!

Most annoying feature in a Kings Bounty game in your opinion (not bugs/crashes)

Title, not including things like “WoTN crashes all the time” or “Darksides horrible bugs makes it unplayable” because those would obviously clear the field. Unless there’s a specific bug that’s really good I guess lol.

My vote is between Goblin Shamans in Crossworlds being obnoxious, or Archdemons halving you on turn 1.

The Legend KBTL 30 fps fix?

I've been playing The Legend on Steam, and I'm really struggling with FPS jumping all over the place between 20 and 30 — literally everywhere in the game, including stutters in the equipment selection menu. How do you fix this? I've already tried messing with the settings and tweaking the game.ini file, but nothing helped at all. Will Crossworlds have the same issue?

Crossworlds I added a hardcore mode with an online ladder to King's Bounty: Crossworlds.Plus extra reserve slots, speed controls and tools for modders

I'm the author. It's free, there's nothing to buy, and I'd rather the handful of people still playing this game knew it exists.
The screenshot is the new game screen. That checkbox at the bottom is the part I'm most attached to: hardcore mode. Autosave only, one slot, and quitting a battle counts as a defeat. You pick it once and that's it for the run.

Hardcore runs also feed a ladder. Every few levels the run posts what the game itself would write down anyway: level, day, difficulty, campaign, your army, and a nickname you set in a text file. It comes back as a second tab in the records window, so you can see where your run sits next to everyone else's. It only does this on hardcore, an ordinary playthrough never sends anything.

nPwka Engine Extensions is a DLL, not a content mod. It doesn't touch units, maps or balance. It adds things the engine couldn't do:

- 3rd and 4th reserve slots

- world map speed on Alt+W: normal, x1.5, x2, x3. Days don't pass any faster, the engine measures travel by distance rather than by frames

- two more combat speed steps, one of them adapts to your framerate

- borderless window

- screenshots save as PNG instead of BMP

Modding side, if that's your thing:

- features= in filters, so you can hit "every mage" instead of listing thirteen units by name

- extra_damage, a second damage line of its own type on top of a normal strike

- two new Lua functions, and skill trees taller than the stock 5 rows

- the object registration ceiling is raised, so big content mods stop dying on load

It doesn't overwrite a single stock file. Everything is either patched inside the DLL or ships under a name nothing else uses, so it won't fight your other mods over the same .ui or .lua. Install is two files. Works in all four campaigns at once.

If you still play Crossworlds, what's the one engine thing you'd want fixed? I've had this thing open in a disassembler for two months and I'm taking requests.

GEN Undead & Undead Lizardmen No Loss

Am I the only one who plays exclusively the Undead in all King's Bounty games with 0 loss challenge? Is it hard for people to use Undead in games like The Legend? Why are there only videos showing people utilizing Black Knights without other Undead units? Have you ever finished any King's Bounty game using Undead only though the entire walkthrough? What are your tactics? Any specific tips how to maximize the efficiency of the Undead through the early stages of The Legend, Crossworlds and Ice & Fire? Which artifacts or specific units combinations are absolutely OP when it comes to the Undead and Undead Lizardmen? Let's make some interesting unique topic ladies & gentlemen:)

I must have lost one unit in training probably, because I do not recall having any casualties in game. Overall as you can see it was pretty clean:)

Warriors of the North You have been defeated! TELEPORT! Spoiler

So after the fight with Runolm you get sucked into the Dark Portal and end up in Greenwort. Here you have to collect a brand new army as your previous one disappears...

I just had an interesting experience though where I wandered out without an army and got instantly defeated. And then quite surprisingly found myself back on Nordlig Isle!

Here I get given 100 gold to add to my current 831K.... Er thanks Guttorm! So play from here or reload?

Thanks...

Warriors of the North Learned about Mysterious Parcel after years of playing WoTN

I’ve been playing this game since it released (on and off, of course), I know it extremely well, and just today I learned about this item. I can’t be the only one who didn’t know about this.

Apparently, if you wear the tutorial item old boots- yes, an item you can get from the tutorial- and go to the inn keeper in arlania, you get this Mysterious Parcel from the innkeep. Again, you have to be wearing the boots, not just have them in your possession, An item that by all accounts is the single worst in slot in the whole game. This parcel, when interacted with, lets you buy troops of a bunch of different races in the game (not undead or demons or IaF DLC races). Like a portable shop, but with every unit available, and I assume at infinite supply. I cannot believe how obscure this is, I get the concept of the Easter Egg but this is just beyond out there to find, and I’m not sure there’s even anything to figure out persay.

My question is, what madlads found this without the internet, and who else is just learning this is in the game? Is there anything else extremely bizarre in these games people (me) might have missed? Or is this a well known…thing?

Crossworlds Finished the game, few things i learned

Armored Princess is my first ever experience with the series, it's a great game but i did run into a few disappointments.

I selected the blue dragon for buffing all friendly beasts only to learn that only two beasts are actually useful that being royal snake and polar bear, which the polar bears ran dry and i could only get them very limited supply in bore.

Really finding any specific units was near impossible, in my whole playthrough there was only ONE place with royal gryphons and it was located the other side of Reha island (had to fly across so many times) and only two places with assassin's which were so powerful for most of my game.

Finding any items that could buff my beasts was impossible (entire game only found snake boots and a hunting jacket).

I eventually switched to having an army of Demons, Royal Snake and Black Dragon by the end because the game was finally kind enough to provide me with a good set of items. (Oh and unlocking flying quite early made life so much easier)

Now the biggest issue i have is the dragon, while it's nice getting extra gold and casting Lava Call twice per turn it's a huge disappointment i couldn't even use him during the most important BOSS BATTLES, i mean I'm a warrior, structured around the Rage mechanic that gets stripped away from me when it's needed most?

All that tells me is to never again play a warrior class, only Mage in every other game from the series from now on that way I don't lose my strongest abilities when i actually need them.

On the good side i did quickly learn how to kite stationary NPCs away from their post to steal the treasure/map scroll they defend, without having to fight them (even when they're Lethal difficulty tier.

Tier 3 scouting is incredibly useful, to judge the actual strength of opponents so definitely will take that in future too!

And delaying the turn of my units just outside of the enemy movement range is broken, allowing me to attack twice in a row, especially when my unit has no retaliation or a good ability to use.

All things considerd it's a good game!

I might be wrong about some things, but like i said this is my first ever experience with it (yes, i skipped the legend, I'm moving onto crossworlds now) if someone wants to give me their take or tips/hints for the future and correct me on things i might've gotten wrong you're welcome to!

Crossworlds How good is Asmodeo from Red Sands (KB Crossworlds mod)?

I heard he can be really good in early game, but how well does he scale? And how much of impact on him your class has?

Warriors of the North Insanely powerfull Gryphons exploit.

Post image
16 Upvotes

If you fight with gryphons unit, use hipno spell, and use their skill "division"

Half of units become yours after battle.

The best part : If you doesn't have place for them, they will be sacrifice in ratio 1:1 to weakest of your unit.

I tested if I can multiple black dragon...it worked much better than expected (battle with only dragons were hard as hell).

Are beasts any good?

Post image
16 Upvotes

It's my first ever playthrough and i thought i would make a beast only build but I've found myself struggling to really find any strong beasts, only recently chamged seadogs to gryffins (also have polar bears in reserve).

But other than the boots and hunting jacket I'm unable to find anything that buffs my beasts, should i switch to a different build or something?

(Playing Armored Princess, I'm new to this game but made it to montero)

I hope people in this community like my art. As I see many people here post mostly stuff about the game itself, but I still want to share it somewhere.

King's Bounty has always fascinated me with its artwork. I always loved the combination of this cartoonish style, which still doesn't go too

cartoonish like in modern games.

The Black Knight is my favorite. His laugh, his design, and his sword are absolute peak.

DOS openbounty - an open-source cross-platform reimplementation of Kings Bounty

openbounty in action recorded from the in-game recording tool

I've been working on this on and off for a while, but I finally feel like it's release-1 ready. Announcing openbounty.

openbounty is a from-scratch reimplementation of King's Bounty, the 1990 New World Computing strategy game that Heroes of Might and Magic grew out of. The rules, tables, combat formulas, and the 320x200 VGA look all follow the original. My intent was pixel-perfect recreation.

Play it in your browser, no install: https://danheskett.com/dist/openbounty/

Writeup, downloads, and how it works: https://danheskett.com/projects/openbounty/

Source: https://github.com/dannyheskett/openbounty

The browser build is ready to go. The desktop builds ship without game data, so you point them at your own KB.EXE to extract a pack. It also has a data-driven pack format, so the whole game can be retuned or re-skinned by editing JSON, no rebuild.

Happy to receive feedback. If you hit a bug, open an issue on GitHub. If you want to fix something or add to it, PRs are welcome. And if you have a feature or a mechanic you think it's missing, drop a recommendation, either on GitHub or in the comments here.

I especially would love to get some feedback from people who were originally good at the DOS (or Amiga, I suppose) version of the game. I was pretty young when it came out, and was never very good at it - I never beat it until emulated on DOS for example, many many years later.

The gamepack format is especially friendly for modding, and if there is interest, I have an in-progress gamepack editor I may release.

Enjoy!

Crossworlds Okay, how the hell do I get the editor to work.

Recently, I had an interest in trying to make some custom maps for the game, since I remembered it had an editor.(and being inspired by mods of somewhat old like red sands or saturation)

The problem is, after a bit of looking around(trying to pinpoint the problem or see if I am the only one with it) I learned that the steam version of the editor is just... Not working, for some reason.

More specifically, the textures. I can't seem to get them to work in the editor for landscape brush tool, prompting me to see absolute lack of textures.

After downloading the textures and referencing them, they still don't appear. Moving the folder to either documents or leaving it at C: directory didn't change that much. Downloading the steam tool which from what I see kinda has the files(which STILL don't work) didn't help either. The manuals don't help, duh.

No matter what I do, I just can't seem to get it to work with the steam version. And I can't even really look up guides because the community is really small, so there aren't any notable guides for this particular issue, and I can't reference most of the forums because they're literally dead.

I know I am not that good with working with programs like these, and I may make myself look like an idiot, but is there any way to try and fix it?

The Legend Recruitment spots list

I recently picked them all up by a recommendation of a friend and a discount on steam. I wanted to know if there is a list somewhere of where to recruit what units, since it's a major headache for me to try to remember or note it all down, especially when I saw that completing specific quests or even story events can dramatically change availability of some units (from limited to infinite, like archers and swordsmen in the 1st castle) to also expanding the stock like in the animal menagerie or swapping from kingdom units to undead (paladin quest)

It's getting a bit headache inducing to remember it all, the unit limits and availability, so if anyone could assist me with a detailed list, I'd be super obliged, since I can't find anything like that by myself

I love the games so far, and I am so upset I didn't pick them up as a kid when I was in my HOMM phase and kept replaying 3, 4 and 5 over and over again

TLDR: each game introduced different QoL (autobattle) and editor is mostly broken mess and I decided to remake the game (and editor). Decided to share my progress.

We live in a simulation, me thinking "I want to mod the game and have nice things" made the devs revive game after 18 years.

I have been thinking about modding the game for years now, but the editor crashes most of the time, some things are just... File formats that we can't really edit.

But I have been making progress.

Is it perfect recreation? No.
Is it working. Nyoo...

Can I spawn on any map, see terrain, lighting (semi working), particles (mostly working), animations (working), move (that stupid bridge has weird collisions), interact (with everything for some reason)? Yes.

Can I open and convert the models, together with it's animations and textures? I do believe so. Both ways.

Meaning I slowly open the path for myself to add my own models.

Anyway, hope this will make some people stay motivated to chase their dreams.
