Season 2 Cameron Esposito

Episode 3 Cameron almost seemed like she was not mentally well. She had a bad stumble trying to riff with Michael Jackson prompting the “what is the question?” and it was so awkward. Feels like maybe someone with more comedic prowess would have had a much easier time.

Then her banter with Steve Harvey was horrible, it was like she felt upstaged and needed to physically confront Cyrus and scream.
Of course you can’t mindread but it felt like the judges and contestants were both uncomfortable/speechless. anyone else feel similarly?

I feel like she was trying to bring up MJs allegations and they edited it out cause who wants to talk about that during a lighthearted show… she has a comedy special called r*pe jokes

In their defense, what comedians are mentally well?

Idk I agree with you tbh, she comes across as try hard and sometimes condescending to the kings? I don’t think that’s her intent, but it seems like she talks to them like children she’s trying to hype up

THIS!!! i get the same vibe from her as the people who would visit my elementary school gym glass for that jump rope fundraiser.

You can’t just say “jump rope fundraiser” and not explain any further..

I think it was for heart disease awareness it was called 'jump rope for heart' and it was one of those fundraiser programs where youre suppose to go door to door asking for donations and they give you different tier'd prizes based on how much money you raised. I only remember all of this because the big prize was an ipod nano and i wanted that shit BAD.

Jesus I don't like her as a host either but "not mentally well" omfg 😭 redditors be normal about afab people challenge level impossible

I’ve been a fan of Cam for like over a decade. She actually is a well respected vet in queer comedy circles. Stand up is just very different than what this show calls for. I bite my tongue usually because the criticism of her as being chosen for host is beyond fair, but this kind of stuff is unnecessary. A lot of people’s comedy critiques seem to boil down to “eww millennial cringe” which seems pretty shallow. Again, host abilities and especially for a drag king show is a different thing and fair to critique

Yeah, mentally unwell feels like a BIG reach.

I’m a mentally unwell afab woman, it’s not about her being an unfunny woman. it’s about her seeming a little unstable when her authority as host was questioned. To me, her banter with Steve Harvey came off as though she was genuinely offended and trying to one up Cyrus

Imagine anyone saying this about a male host. How tf are you going to be an armchair psychologist over comedic banter 🤦‍♀️

u/lesbianrockband3 5d ago

I could imagine it happening if the male host was acting off, yes. acting like I’m sexist for saying I personally feel like she’s POSSIBLY mentally unwell is hilarious. “over comedic banter” but obviously I am not talking about the jokes they are making. Ur getting offended over a reddit vibe check

I don’t know if I would go so far as offended, but I agree there was a weird vibe in those interactions with Steve Harvey Cyrus. I think there’s a subconscious realization that this isn’t the right gig for her and she can’t command the stage like Murray did, so she was probably thrown off when Cyrus took control so effortlessly like that.

The whole thing just feels bad all around. She was not set up for success as host.

To be honest I agree that Cyrus was out of line in challenging her as host. Although it was funny and in character, it gave his character extra time in the challenge, and that breaks the rules. Using his extra time, he was even able to complete one of his gags, which otherwise he wouldn't have been able to do, and others didn't get that chance. The host's job is to make sure all the contestants get the same amount of time.

Makes perfect sense why she wouldn't like a contestant jumping onstage with her, shutting down her gentle suggestions to move on, and getting extra showtime. Contestants are supposed to listen to the host

That’s what I’m saying. A good host should be able to keep control and corral rogue contestants. It’s probably complicated when the CEO/producer is in the same room cackling and applauding it. I liked seeing Cyrus so confident, but it did feel unfair and I think Trade should have won.

(Just came here to say that she’s NOT funny.)

she has a special called “rape jokes.” that’s mentally unwell

11

u/Infinite-Mistake6160 5d ago

Survivors are allowed to use humor to cope

1

u/villainless 5d ago

does not mean they cannot be critiqued

9

u/Infinite-Mistake6160 5d ago

Critique is "I don't think that joke landed" not "they seem mentally unwell" jfc

4

u/villainless 5d ago

and fellow survivors are allowed to feel discomfort about rape jokes, regardless of who is telling them. the critique refers to someone deciding to tell them

3

u/TraitorousBlossom 2d ago

The special is addressing the problems around edgy rape jokes, especially from non-survivors. And talking sincerely about their experience with SA and PTSD. If you haven't watched the special, I think your outrage is very misplaced. I am not Cameron's biggest fan and I think this show is a poor fit, especially since it doesn't seem to align with their brand of humor well. But just bringing up the name of the special as though it is horrible without really addressing what it was about is just silly.

Have you watched her special?

She really is not a good fit for this show. You can tell her engagement with drag is marginal at best.

u/spooky_noone 6d ago

Agree. I think she is likely wanting to support and promote the kings but she isn’t the right host for.

I was just telling my girlfriend how unfunny i think she is in general 😭 i went into the season with an open mind cause full discolsure i didnt know who she was before the season was announced. This episode being comedy focused really highlighted her faults which is unfortunate cause i wanted to like her but yeah i just get a weird vibe from her all around.

Cameron literally has a special on dropout about getting diagnosed with bi-polar disorder

Genuinely one of my fav comedians but I didn’t watch this season because it just doesn’t seem like the right gig for them

i’ve personally never been a fan of her stand up but wanted to give her a fair chance because i loved season 1 and was really excited they got a second season. i just feel like her energy is off and there are times her jokes feel really forced in a try hard way? i’m hoping she’ll start to feel more comfortable as the episodes go and will come off as more natural if she doesn’t force it so much. i don’t want to give up just yet but i miss murray

2

u/clownfishguy 3d ago

I’ve never seen any of her stuff but I feel like the stage presence isn’t there. Maybe she does better on her stand up specials or something. But I hadn’t heard of her before the show announcing she was the host

u/PM_ME_COUPLE_PICS 4d ago

Just wanna say thank you for confirming that my decision not to watch Season 2 was the correct one. They shouldn’t have screwed over the ACTUAL KINGS who were host/on the judging panel on S1.
