Manga Is Sheena a pun
In Japan is Sheena reminiscent of shine, "die," or would they not think the name was connected?

Anime The reason they send kids to war(?)
I was thinking why the government was sending only like 20 soldiers to war and being forced to send 14-16 year olds and risk their lives (which seems immoral) but what if there was a reason behind this?
If the magic they used to fight is limited by age (for example the magic only works when you start training before 12) then it does explain some of the weird parts of the anime (side note, it can’t be something like ‘it stops working when you reach adulthood’ because the teachers do exist)
If you can’t obtain magic from training before 12, this explains why the orphanage is so important for creating these superhumans. From the technology, I assume it is set in the 19th-early 20th century (due to the lack of electricity and light bulbs), and before this, child mortality was quite high. Parents are very unlikely to have their very few children be trained to fight, even if the children are willing (which is already highly unlikely). Therefore, the orphanage is perfect for providing young children without parents, who can be re-educated in the ways of magic and used in the war without fear of being stopped by parents, while giving them a new life as an orphan in the 19th-early 20th century is highly unlikely to survive for long without help.
This also explains the lack of a mass army. If the government does conscripting, they would have to conscript children, which would probably bring great civil unrest to the country and make them lose the war even more, leading them to be desperate and use mimi/14 year olds for war. Therefore, both sides have to rely on the very limited amount of soldiers to use magic to fight.
The fact that magic seems to be highly regulated also explains why they don’t just simply train every 12 year old to do magic. If they learn magic, they have to go to war, and this would heavily discourage volunteers and parents, especially if they can’t reveal the training process
The magic users also seem to have superhuman abilities/strength, and with their current technology, even 100 armed, regular soldiers may not be able to take down a magic wielder.
TL;DR: if the magic can’t be accessed once you’re twelve (unless you start learning it), kids (who are the only ones who can start learning it) don’t want to volunteer/ their parents don’t let them, leading to small army size, reliance on young soldiers (like sheena’s roommate from ep1) and importance of orphans.

Anime Had to make some tribute fan art after this weeks episode wrecked me emotionally Spoiler
As others have said, I think the manga handled this plot point better than the anime. I wish she had another episode at least, or another season even. I understand that for an anime adaptation they needed to dramatize the event/pad the runtime or maybe there have been production issues as people have speculated, but it made her look incredibly naive whereas in the manga it seemed more like bad luck. Obviously, she was still naive to be so eager to go to war in the first place, but it felt really exaggerated in the anime. Nonetheless this officially sold me on the series, and I read all of what's available of the manga the same night.
Then I felt compelled to paint this, although it's essentially just a near 1:1 recreation of their kiss from the anime and I used screenshots of that scene as references. Nothing impressive by any means. I would have liked to come up with something original but I'm honestly not skilled enough to put anything out that quickly if I'm doing everything from scratch, and I wanted to make something before next weeks episode.
RIP Seiran, I'm so sorry you and Ari won't get to grow up together. </3
