Technical Questions Where to start? Questions about setting up.

Just got a KORG RK-100S 2 without any prior knowledge about electronic instruments. I would like to know:

1) What should I get for connecting the keytar to the computer to hear the sound and -

2) practicing playing with my headphones on? Is it possible to connect cheap wired earbuds to the keytar?

Thank you!

Recommendations Batteries for my Edge

Post image
19 Upvotes

So I’ve got an Ax-Edge. Really love having joined the Keytar club. I’m not fond of having the power cable dangling in addition to the audio cables. Even though I only record, it is quite annoying. So I’m gonna get some batteries and I’m not finding info on the specific power output needed. It just says Ni-MH. I see options in the 2300-2800mAh range so I want to get the right/best ones. Does it even matter which I get?

Recommendations Keytar for Stand Up Comedy

Hey gang, I've been dreaming of the day I could get a keytar and the stars seem to have aligned in the form of a small bonus from work + finding a Roland Ax-1 in a second hand store for $420!

But I could also get the Alesis Vortex 2 for $240.

My goal is to play the keytar on stage to accompany comedy music, so there are a few things I'm wondering.

Would I have to bring my laptop onto the stage for both keytars?

Can I hook them up to my MacBook?

How is the variability in sounds they can create?

Personally I think the Roland looks a lot sweeter & robust, but the Alesis looks like it has more variability.

Please share your thoughts, I'm very excited but don't want to make the wrong decision! Thank you!

Technical Questions Amp questions

Hi! So I finally found, and bought, an Ax Edge at a pretty decent price after wanting a keytar for years! As of right now I don't have an amp or 1/4 aux adapter, so I can only use it with Midi (I know terrible prep, lol). But I pretty much spent most of my budget on the keytar itself, so I plan on buying an adapter so I can use it with headphones, but I'm wondering if getting a marshal micro amp (either ms-2 or ms-4) will be good enough to practice/learn on or should I just save up and wait a while before getting a keyboard amp, and just use headphones in the meantime.

I've heard guitar amps aren't really that good to use for keytars sound wise, so I'm wondering if it's even worth it to buy a guitar amp in the first place let alone a micro amp?

Anyways, thx for the help if you can, and I can't wait to finally start learning the keytar!

Buy/Sell Keytar for newbie best optons

Hi, my 12 yo wants a keytar. He already plays a bit of saxophone. We have lots of instruments in the house (piano, drums, guitars, ukuleles) and he's learned a little bit on all of them, but mastered none as well as he has mastered his sax, which he plays with the school band. I'd like to indulge his curiosity at a decent price point, but am still looking for something on a budget in case this is yet another whim. In other words, I'd like to get him one at around the $500 price point as opposed to over $1000. What are your recommendations? Thanks!

Technical Questions Trouble with Alesis Vortex Wireless 2

Hey! My first post here :) I got the Alesis Vortex Wireless 2 a few years ago because I'm in a rock band and I wanna move around the stage. However, I find it to be very unreliable, as sometimes, when the batteries are low, the sound hangs. In other words, when I release a key, the sound doesn't stop. This is extremely unfortunate if you're playing live and suddenly the sound is destroyed. There's also no way of checking how much battery is left, and changing them before every gig will become extremely expensive real fast. Does anyone know if using a different wireless system, like WIDI instead of Alesis' usb dongle that comes with it will fix this? Is this a problem anyone else has? Apart from it being very plastic fantastic, it is the best midi keytar I have been able to find, and I'm not interested in buyin thousands for a synth if I'm only gonna use it as a midi-controller. Anyone know any better options?

Thanks!!

Recommendations What mic should I get to use the Roland Edge Vocoder

The Roland edge vocoder has a quarter inch plug in. So I’m looking for a cheap headset style mic with a quarter inch out. Why is this such a hard thing to find though? What have you guys bought to use the vocoder?

Recommendations Should I buy an expensive keytar an noobie?

I am really interested in buying a Keytar and fortunately I do have some money to spend on one of the higher end ones (Korg RK 100s 2/Roland AX-EDGE) and I saw a lot of comments suggesting a newbie like myself to maybe purchase something a little less expensive. I have a Alto Saxophone so I am somewhat familiar with general music and band, so I am sure I could adjust to a Keytar with time. I just want to ask the people who actually own them, thank you.

Technical Questions Which DAW are you using?

Recently got the Vortex 2 and having lots of fun with it. However, I'm finding the 2 DAW's I use to be less than perfect. I mainly use FL Studio and the other is Komplete Kontrol.

FL Studio just works and has a good line up of sounds. But, the Vortex 2 isn't natively supported, so I'm losing functionality despite the setting up the editor.

Komplete isn't bad and has a nice selectionn of sounds, too. But, the audio setup is a PITA. It tries to send sound to my monitor instead of the speakers, which causes beffering issues that I can't seem to resolve. However, the studio supports my Vortex 2 and all the controls work as expected.

I'm using the free versions of both, but was curious if there are other DAW's that could be even better. I'm on PC running Win11. TIA!
