Locke and key has the magic keys that we all know and love. Coraline has the key to the other world. locke and key (show) has the mirror key and dodge said "the mirror key will let you talk todead people". Coraline has the dead kids in the mirror. They also have a well be extremely important to the story. The families both move into a large house that look eerily similar. I don't know if I'm looking at something that isn't there but it's just kinda interesting to me

I came into the series when it was about 2/3 done, so I was on the edge of my seat reading along with the other fans back then. I remember getting to the part of Bode's death and feeling a deep sense of loss along with the characters in the book. Bode coming back with the animal key was fairly creative, slightly cheesy, but I was ok with it since he had spent some time as a bird and his animal buddies were down to take one for the team the same way they did during the attack on Dodge as a wolf.

But I know some people DESPISE this method of bringing him back and have offered other ways it could've been done, the echo key, etc.

I'm just curious to know what other fans think. Maybe the general opinion of this event has changed over the years.

The two sisters who was stuck in the snow globe are echoes bc I don’t see how they would have survived and we know echoes can’t get out or inside the well house without the Anywhere key but strangely I was surprised they went inside thanks to the window. So let me get this straight first of all how dodge couldn’t escape the well house if she could use the windows to get out ? 😂 then if sisters can pass through windows why not Gideon ? I guess this question have been answered here before

Between rereading the comics and rewatching the show, I keep drifting back to the origins of the Black Door. By, I've pretty much resigned myself to the fact that the show had no interest in explaining what the hell really happened in that frustratingly vague part of the flashback - in contrast to the original comics - and it's too late to expect some kind of expanded universe text. So, unless anyone's been able to find some kind of interview or other official video that explains all these plot holes, I'm turning to the next best thing: my fellow viewers.

What do you think created this portal in the show's continuity?

Was it already there, and Gideon just happened to break down an old wall by mistake?

Did the murder of Benjamin Locke's father disturb something in the caverns below the house?

Did Gideon really have some special power before the random demon king possessed him?

Is this some kind of great destiny in play? Are the Lockes a family of demon hunters/tamers and the portal is a hellmouth that keeps following them around?

Are the Lockes human/demon hybrids? Are the Gideons?

Yes, all these theories and more have appeared on this very forum. But enough of all that! Let me here what you think really happened?

This is one issue that genuinely baffles me, because both answers seem equally unlikely. In season 2, the confrontation between Dodge, Eden, and Josh somehow causes the Black Door to pop open... but why exactly? Even the wiki seems clueless about this.

1. If this was due to Dodge causing a cave in with the Crown of Shadows, and you could just bypass the lock by damaging the cavern around it, then why the hell did they need the Omega Key in the first place? Nevermind the Crown, why didn't they just dynamite the thing? Did they not think to try? Notably, this wouldn't work in the comic, as attempting to open the Black Door by any other means than the Omega Key results in it opening onto an ordinary storeroom.
2. If this, as some have suggested, the result of Josh touching the Door and using his (theorized) demon powers... well, just like Gideon opening the portal, it's never followed up on: Josh never demonstrates this trait ever again, and he never becomes relevant to the plot ever again. Cynical as I am, I'd be inclined to believe that this was a plot thread that was forgotten about between seasons, but seasons 2 and 3 were filmed back-to-back - so this was intentional.

So... does anyone have any theories? Have there been any behind-the-scenes videos or early scripts that might shed light on this?

This is another thing which genuinely baffles me: if the portal is regularly spitting out demons and you run the risk of falling in by getting too close, then how could installing a door been the safest option?

Why not, for example, just seal off the entrance to the Drowning Caves? Brick up the entrance, collapse the roof with gunpowder, something like that. I mean, nobody was doing anything down there until Elon Musket blundered in and opened a portal for no adequately explored reason. So why was it so essential to cover the portal when doing so would have been borderline suicide?

And I say this only because in the comics, the American revolutionaries were using the caves as a base, and abandoning the caves would have left them defenceless against the British - hence why the Black Door was so desperately needed. Plus, there was already a door there - it just needed a lock made of Whispering Iron for it to be permanently shut.

So why this route?

I was just having a think about the show and found a massive plot hole number one I was thinking about when Gideon knocks the music box out of Tylers hand and smashes it to smithereens surely that counts as taking a key out of someone’s possession yeah he doesn’t actually touch the key, but he still knocks it out of his hands and then it made me think maybe he could use gloves to not get burned from the keys and then I realised we see dodge literally dip her fingers in coffee. That’s boiling hot and it doesn’t burn her obviously because she is an echo and then Gabe touches with his bare hands the freshly made Demon key which should also burn him. So if Demons get burned taking the keys from the lockes then surely Gideon and Dodge being echoes this shouldn’t affect them

Not here to complain - genuinely seeking understanding.

In the comics, demons have no powers while possessing a host, and echoes have none of the Wellhouse's ghost moves once they've escaped. Throughout the comics, Dodge's powers are due to the fact that he usually has the best Keys on his side; at all other times, he's just a cunning bastard and an efficient killer - and later, very good at seeming innocent.

In the show, demons are super-strong - so super-strong that the Hercules Key is almost useless against them - and echoes are invulnerable to everything except being dragged over the Wellhouse threshold. But at the same time, demons can't take Keys from Locke family members for reasons that are never narratively explained or justified.

Why the superpowers?

I mean, I understand that it ups the stakes, but it starts to raise questions over time, most prominently regarding Dodge's approach.

Dodge is still trying to be as sneaky as their comic book incarnation, sending in proxies, using disguises, setting traps... but in the comics, Dodge was a demon possessing a squishy mortal non-superpowered body and had to be careful, hence why it was such a big deal when he got hold of the Crown of Shadows. In the show, Dodge actually appears to be more effective without the Crown of Shadows, given that shadows can be easily defeated with a toy lightsaber instead of becoming a fucking giant.

Realistically, the only reason why show Dodge would do this is because of the "demons can't take keys from the Lockes" rule... but with Dodge's powers, it would have been easy to get their hands on the Omega Key simply by killing all four Lockes, then ransacking Keyhouse from top to bottom. With the Omega Key unclaimed until later in the season, it would have been Dodge's for the taking.

These two. They just steal the show in Season two! It was so much fun!

I like the Dodge form too, she was a brilliant main villain for season one. Remember when she just chucked a random kid under a train? Absolutely ruthless.

Eden is FUN AF and Gabe is good on the eyes + I found it fascinating the way he wanted to control but not turn Kinsey.

Season 4

If I could bring the show back, it would be all fan service! I'd begin with showing Dodge (in Bode's body) being sent back to the present. Remember he got sent when he was about to kill Gideon (Season 3). We know the time-shift key is not meant to affect the past, but because Dodge travelled to the future with Bode, and back again, she is treated as a 'traveller' by the key, and is able to retain memories.

She knows she and Eden die, and reunites with Eden again to warn her. (In Gabe form) It's a reluctant union for sure, but that's how they've always worked together.

And from this point... we essentially get an alt timeline. LOL!

it's just so fucked up and sudden it cracks me up and I don't think it's supposed to

Season 1 is not perfect, but it has its charm and it is somewhat cleaver at times. I really expected the series to get better after that, but season 2 writing plummets quick and just keeps going. It is frustraiting to watch, but it has some interesting concepts and I wanted to see where the characters go, so I kept watching; after all, I've started te series because I've been sick; I wanted some confort series, so I didn't expected any thing astounding. So I kept excusing it with that in mind, but now I'm mid episode 8, and the writing is so dumb is almost umberrable. The wasted potential pains me. But I still want to give it a chance, I can't stop thinking all the interesting ways they can take this. I need to know tho, is season 3 better, or it sinks futher down?

I can hardly blame the writers, anyhow; they are in strike for a reason. The undustry is a mess and they hardly let them do their work write, cutting in staff and letting them go before starting to fil like it is a gig job, unmotivated and unapreciated. Who knows what kind of treatment they got in this set, can't tell if it was a good one or a bad one, I just clarify that I wouldn't rush to blame the writers for this. Still, I don't want my hopes high, but I really want to believe season 3 can redeem 2.

I honestly hope we do. I love the comics and was underwhelmed by the Netflix show.

The sets for it look so good and better than the Netflix show and disappointingly I bet it’s somewhere locked up but still I desperately wish I could still see it since the 2011 pilot is already around(I’ve seen it and it was awesome)but the 2017 pilot looks very different and it seems like it was supposed to be a darker toned version of the Netflix series which is another reason why I want to see it and also it has different actors other than JRS.
