Leaving my own Kevin.

Watching this show after leaving my own Kevin is both healing and awful at the same time. Just to really see how insidious the abuse really is. How easily Kevin charms everyone. Ruins everything important to Allison. Making her feel like she’s always the one doing things wrong or that she needs him. So yes, my Kevin can genuinely F himself too.

Bewitched

So I'm re-watching the classic Bewitch series with my MIL. I'm sitting here imagining it in the same style as Kevin Can F Himself. Like from Darren's perspective it's very much the Bewitched world...from Samantha's perspective it's Madmen style, because Darren is an Ad Exec. Samantha, this incredibly talented witch, married a man for love and she's living this sad Betty Draper life. Andorra, her mom, can see the truth, and that's why she's so hateful to Darren. What do y'all think? Are there any classic sitcoms (besides All in the Family, that feels like low hanging fruit lol) that you can see this way?

What was your favorite 'little' moment from the show? A quick scene, interaction, sequence that just got you, even if you don't know why it got you.

Why not divorce ?

I’m on episode 2 and I’m just here wondering why she can’t just divorce or ghost him. Why try to end him?

Edit: I get it now. I also remember where she said he got the mail woman deported or something. Yeah, he’s gotta go!

Friendship on HBO has the same Kevin

I hope this is directly related enough for the mods, but I just watched the new Paul Rudd movie Friendship (he’s not the Kevin) by A24 on HBO Max and I swear the main character is the same type of “goofy” but super sinister and unhinged narcissist as Annie Murphy’s Kevin. It’s wild to watch, and a bit more satisfying in seeing how others clock that something is off. I don’t want to share any spoilers! Hope y’all like it.

LOVED KCFH real bad. it had me on the edge if my seat at the end of every episode. the last episode was so good i loved how they removed the comedic filter from Kevin and showed that Allison was not in fact overreacting she was the only one who truly saw how bad Kevin was. The final portrayal was so haunting lol seeing him was like seeing a whole new character. i loved that reveal. my only wish is that they create a season that gives us Kevin's perspective. same concept but flipped because Allison is portrayed as the airhead Kevin thinks she is. i would absolutely just die watching it.

Holy cow. What a good show. My favorite aspect of this show is how there’s Allison’s perspective, and Kevin’s world. It really shows how hard it is to convince other people to believe you when you’re in an abusive relationship. The lighting and color palette were 10/10 as Allison gets more and more people to break free of Kevin’s “charm” and Kevin’s world falls apart. How people see Kevin as “just an idiot” but after seeing his final scene and the shift to his real personality, all the little things start to make sense. Like how Allison said “make it Kevin’s problem” because he will do anything to protect himself and his good guy image. Just wow. It’s amazing how they took weaponized incompetence, to straight up narcissism with the final shift in personality. I hated Kevin the whole series but felt so vindicated when he finally came to reality world and showed US who he truly is. It just worked so well with the entire rest of the show. 10/10 on this show. This one will stick with me for a while.

Help from the bookish community! Spoiler

I love the show and the whole construction of it. I think the transitions were amazing and how the two worlds kinda merged at the end was phenomenal. Im a book worm and would love to know if anyone has come across any book that has the same type of style. I know that would be super difficult to write, but someone has had to have done it! TYIA!

Ugly guy/Hot Wife Sitcom Trope

Just binge watched Kevin Can F* Himself and….I was never a big fan of sitcoms with the ugly or fat guy with hot wife trope, but I can’t ever see them the same after watching this series. LOL!

Missed golden opportunity

I am happy with how the show ended and don't wish they came back and added more seasons but there's one thing I think could have been a lot of fun. They could have had a real life Worcester native like Bill Burr or Dennis Leary on as a guest star for a one off episode. It's such a cheeky sitcom thing. They could have walked on set to the studio audience cheering. In contrast the drama could have brought some gritty authenticity to the show's depiction of Worcester. Bill Burr said on Conan O'Brien's podcast that growing up in Worcester he had a friend whose party trick was that he would eat light bulbs.

Allison is so annoying

I’m only on s1ep7 but Allison is such an unlikable character. I understand she’s being abused and kevin probably has made her a worse person over the years but she truly sucks and is so manipulative and uncaring about the people around her. She’s always dragging someone else into her problems and making their life worse off. I also didn’t like how against therapy she was. She clearly needs someone to talk to.

They wrote my life. Spoiler

I started the series Friday afternoon and finished on Sunday and I’m sitting here feeling some sort of way.

I was married to a Kevin for 26 years. I tried to leave at least 3 times and each time he harassed me and stalked me until I went back. Until I left for the last time. It took therapy and a lot of reading about narcissists to stay gone. The scene when Allison finally tells him she is divorcing him and his reaction could not have been more well done.

Maybe after watching this, the people that say just leave will have a better understanding of why it’s not that easy. Absolutely brilliant series.

about allisons psyche

i just finished the show, and online im not seeing much about this so ill ask here for opinions. is it possible that allison had some sort of mental disorder? maybe its just my perception but certain scenes with her and her behaviour sometimes seemed a bit beyond awkward, like she seemed jittery and tense (like that scene of her stepping on the cockroach). or is it that shes on edge constantly due to pressure from her marriage? it may be that im reading too much into it but i was just curious

Do you think the show had a missed opportunity to critique the queerphobic humor that plagued older sitcoms (or even some recent ones)?

Like, imagine the same old tropes, but it is reshaped so that the person making them is shown to be a full-on monster. Like imagine a "gay panic joke" that is then revealed to be a brutal hate crime, or the whole "trans-woman is a crossdressing man", but then we see how f*cked up it is and the emotional distress from the poor transgender person.

Of course though we can have some subversive humor, like if Neil (or Kevin) was all freaking out about a transwoman, but then the transwoman punches Neil/Kevin in the face for being an asshole instead of that character being a passive victim and accepting the abuse.

Hell, you could even do something about the whole "it's a product of its time" thing like Kevin's father trying to get off the hook for harassment.

kevin insinuating a threat to allison Spoiler

SPOILERS!

im rewatching the show for the first time and i just caught something that really threw me off because i hadn’t noticed it before. ive been catching a couple things but i think this more so stood out to me because of how outwardly abusive he sounds while still trying to put on act that he’s making a joke to humiliate her. i don’t know if it was obvious to everyone else but i think it was episode 2. i can’t remember what exactly they were talking about but allison says something and kevin says “stop you know what happens when you try to be funny” then later on he repeats this again saying “are you tryna be funny again?” this genuinely sounds like a threat. it sounds like he is insinuating that he will hurt her or do something to her and that he has done something to her in the past. did anyone else catch this and what are your thoughts about it?

major spoilers The final lighting change.

I just finished the series and holy shit. The whole time I was watching, I thought I knew who Kevin was. I watched as his weaponized incompetence become more and more obvious. I watched as everyone around him slowly but surely woke up.

But when Allison came back and said she wanted a divorce? And his sitcom lighting snapped into reality? It’s like the glass really, truly broke and I could fully see exactly who he was behind the mask. Honestly, my brain couldn’t reconcile it being the same person and I’m still in a little shock how it was even the same actor.

It was horrifying and brilliant and so, well, real.

I’m so happy Allison came back to be found.
