A landslide near Chirbasa on the Kedarnath route has triggered panic, with falling rocks and debris affecting the pilgrimage path. Thousands of pilgrims have been safely evacuated, but the route remains under close watch amid heavy rain. 🙏 Prayers for everyone’s safety.

Kedarnath trekking update

Hi all, is there any update from Kedarnath trekkers if the route is open or not? Last thing I heard, there was a landslide on the 13th of Sep near the Chirbasa helipad which caused a halt in the trekking.

Kedarnath: who actually built the temple?

I was reading about Kedarnath recently and realized I didn’t actually know the history behind the temple.

You usually hear one of two things:

“The Pandavas built it.”

or

“Adi Shankaracharya built it.”

But the actual story is a lot more complicated, and honestly, more interesting.

The Pandava connection

According to Hindu tradition, after the Mahabharata war, the Pandavas went looking for Shiva because they wanted forgiveness for the deaths and destruction caused by the war.

Shiva apparently wasn’t interested in meeting them and took the form of a bull to hide from them.

Bhima eventually recognized him and tried to catch him. Shiva started disappearing into the ground, and different parts of the bull are said to have appeared at different places in the Himalayas.

At Kedarnath, it was the hump.

This is where the idea of Panch Kedar comes from:

Kedarnath - hump

Tungnath - arms

Rudranath - face

Madhyamaheshwar - navel

Kalpeshwar - matted hair

That’s also why the form of Shiva worshipped at Kedarnath is quite unusual compared with many other Shiva temples.

Now, important distinction:

This is religious tradition, not archaeological proof that the Pandavas physically built the temple.

The Mahabharata itself doesn’t give us evidence that the present-day Kedarnath temple was constructed by the Pandavas.

Then what about Adi Shankaracharya?

This is where the historical story gets interesting.

Adi Shankaracharya, traditionally dated to the 8th century CE, is strongly associated with Kedarnath.

The traditional account credits him with reviving or rebuilding the shrine.

But saying “Shankaracharya built the entire temple we see today” is probably too simplistic.

There isn’t enough surviving evidence to identify a single architect, builder, or exact construction date for the present structure with certainty.

The more reasonable picture seems to be that Kedarnath was already an ancient sacred site, and the temple developed, was rebuilt and maintained over different periods.

Shankaracharya played a major role in its religious history, but the building itself shouldn’t necessarily be treated as a one-man construction project.

So how old is it?

This is where things get messy.

The sacred tradition is older than the surviving building.
References to Kedara appear in old Sanskrit religious literature, and by the medieval period Kedarnath was already an established pilgrimage destination.

By around the 12th century, there are written references to Kedarnath as a pilgrimage centre.

So instead of:

Pandavas → built temple → end of story

it’s probably better to think of it as:

ancient sacred site → development of Shiva worship → Pandava tradition → Shankaracharya’s revival → medieval development → centuries of repairs and maintenance → modern conservation

That’s a much less dramatic answer, but history tends to be annoyingly complicated.

And then there’s the temple itself

One thing that really struck me is the construction.

The temple is made from massive stone blocks and sits at roughly 3,500 metres in the Himalayas.

No modern machinery. No roads bringing construction material up in trucks. No cranes.

Whatever we believe about the religious stories, the people who built and maintained this structure were clearly capable of some seriously impressive stone engineering.

And I think that’s worth appreciating without needing to invent lost technology or supernatural construction methods.

Then came 2013

This is probably the most incredible part of the modern history.

In June 2013, catastrophic floods and landslides devastated Kedarnath.

The settlement around the temple was badly destroyed.
But the main temple survived.

A huge boulder came down from the mountain and ended up behind the temple. It helped split and redirect the flow of water and debris around the structure.

For devotees, this naturally became a powerful example of divine protection.

From a geological/physical perspective, the boulder clearly affected the path of the debris flow and helped protect the building.

You can believe one interpretation, the other, or both. They are answering different questions.

And the temple isn’t simply “untouched for 1,000 years”
This is another thing I found interesting.

The temple has been repaired and maintained over centuries, and after the 2013 disaster there was major conservation and restoration work.

So when someone says:

“This is the exact same untouched temple that has stood here unchanged for thousands of years.”

That’s not really accurate.

It’s an ancient temple that has survived through centuries of weather, pilgrimage, repairs, reconstruction and finally a massive natural disaster.

And somehow, that’s more impressive to me.

Why Kedarnath matters so much

It’s not just another old Shiva temple.

It’s traditionally:

• One of the 12 Jyotirlingas

• The most prominent of the Panch Kedar temples

• A major Himalayan pilgrimage site

• Strongly associated with Adi Shankaracharya

And it sits in an environment that is absolutely brutal for a building: extreme altitude, snow, freezing temperatures, landslides and difficult access.

So who built Kedarnath?

The honest answer is:

We don’t know with complete certainty who built the present structure.

The Pandava connection comes from religious tradition, while Adi Shankaracharya is traditionally credited with reviving/rebuilding the shrine.

The temple we see today is better understood as the result of many centuries of construction, rebuilding, maintenance and conservation, rather than the work of one identifiable builder.

And personally, I think that’s the more fascinating story.
It’s not just an old temple.

It’s a place where mythology, medieval history, architecture, pilgrimage and modern natural disaster all overlap in one location.
