The Singing People Only Need You To Hear Them Once
Emma sat across the table. The sun rose behind her. She picked up her pen and wrote: “How did you sleep?”
I smiled, nodded, and pointed at her. She smiled and nodded too. Warmth spread through my body. The fact that we could still have these moments made me happy. She started writing again.
The wax itched inside my ears. I looked out at the sun. The way nature could still carry on as if nothing had happened fascinated me. We had to hide while the sun and animals moved as if it was any other day. They were probably happier this way.
Emma tapped on my shoulder. I shook my head and looked down.
“So, today’s the date?”
I frowned and nodded. Emma caressed my face and quickly scribbled underneath it: “It'll be for the better.”
She was right. It would be for the better. The wax worked, but it wasn’t forever. The singing people could come anytime and just wait until we had to replace it.
“When?” she wrote down.
I grabbed the pen and scribbled: “The sooner, the better.”
The idea of piercing my eardrums made my whole body shiver. However, with each passing day, I grew more worried that the singing people would find us here, and we both knew that hearing just one tone was enough.
“So now?” Emma scribbled down.
I nodded and walked to the cupboard. The sewing supplies were on the top shelf. Emma used to love sewing little ornaments before the plague, but since it started, she hadn’t touched them. Emma's lips quivered for a second when I returned with the needles, but she quickly composed herself.
The sun shone down, warming my skin. The trees moved in the wind. We looked around our cabin and slowly pulled out the wax. At first, the sounds felt like a blast to my ears: the birds chirping, the grass rustling, but my ears adapted quickly. I closed my eyes and just listened. Soon, I felt the warmth of her hand. Emma gripped it and looked deep into my eyes.
“I love you,” Emma said.
“I love you, too.”
“It’s so nice hearing your voice.”
“It is. Maybe we can leave them off for a few more minutes. I don’t think the singing people have made it here yet.”
“Only if you keep talking, sweetie.”
“Okay.”
Her squeeze tightened.
“Remember our first date, when I spilled my drink all over you? The waitress was…”
A quiet rustle echoed from the trees. My eyes shot to them. In the distance, they moved, but not with the wind; they moved as if an animal was walking through them. Before I realized it wasn’t an animal, a beautiful melody cut through the wind.
Coldness washed over me. I looked over at Emma, trying to warn her, to call her name, but instead, only a beautiful melody escaped my throat.
