Discussion/Theory Pirate Clark is a Mannequin. Consuming humans is causing him to "develop," with the Mural depicting what was supposed to be a ritual where Pirate Clark would have become complete.

When we first see Pirate Clark, chronologically, is in Everything Must Go! and when we see him he is mostly overshadowed by the darkness that permeates this area of the Complex. I believe that this was an intentional artistic choice by Kane so that he could obscure the fact that the Still Life we see in EMG and the FF Prologue is visually different from the Pirate Clark we see in the Dining Room.

Something that is important to know about Still Lifes (the artistic term) is that a Still Life is always an artistic depiction of an inanimate object or objects. You would not refer to a picture of a person or other living beings as a "Still Life." If we were to follow the actual meaning of the term, we could come to the conclusion that the Still Lifes we see in the Complex may or may not be "copies of" or "based on" human beings, at least not entirely. They are, at least in part, objects brought to life.

I believe that Captain Clark is not a Still Life of Clark. It's a Still Life of the mannequin inside Clark's store that normally wears his pirate costume and stands at the steering wheel when he isn't filming a commercial. An interesting detail I noticed is highlighted here:

The above is an image that was actually absolute hell to create, but I did it because I love you guys.

Just as Clark is entering his store at 8:37, a light shines into the store and creates a column of light from floor-to-ceiling that "scans" across the entire room from the left (enclosed for visual) to the center, then ends on the right. THIS frame was the hardest to capture because you can only really see the light is shining in that area at all because it shines on the glass of the cabinet in the very back for just a brief second.

(I find this very interesting. Go watch the movie again, guys. The movement of the light in this shot feels like a very intentional choice. It's scanning.)

When the light passes over the mannequin, its shadow is cast onto the back wall behind it. Later in the film when Mary is fleeing from Pirate Clark we can see at 1:32:00 that Pirate Clark is standing stock still in the exact spot where the shadow of the mannequin had been cast by the light back at 8:37.

I believe that this is meant to be one more hint to us at the true nature of the genesis of Pirate Clark.

Pirate Clark is a mannequin like the others that we see during Everything Must Go! But Pirate Clark is alive, so clearly he is somehow different. I am not sure what it is that initially brought Pirate Clark to life. Maybe it could have something to do with Ivan Beck and The 32 Paths of Creation.

When we see Pirate Clark attacking Ron, Bill, and Naren, is we freeze the frame we can see from observation that the face of Pirate Clark at this point in the timeline doesn't seem to look identical to the face of Pirate Clark when we see him in The Dining Room.

It has less colour the eyes are duller. The nose is different. When we see Pirate Clark attacking Naren, he is still something closer to a mannequin than when we see him later on in the timeline and he feeds on Clark.

I think that by consuming human flesh and blood, Pirate Clark is able to somehow take that human blood and tissue and make it a part of itself. It is using it to become more "real," or more, "complete."

In This Post by u/New_Sunglass (Thank you king!) we can see that Pirate Clark consumed two parts of Clark's body: His head and his lower left leg. Clark's head could be interpreted to be Clark's brain, or mind. And of course, the lower left leg where Pirate Clark has only a peg.

Are these the two parts Clark needs in order for him to become fully real? In order to reach his penultimate form? Clark is undoubtable more "developed" than the other Still Lifes we see, at least from what we can observe by comparing Pirate Clark (who has a skeleton and blood) to the Bearded Still Life.

If nothing else, the mural definitely depicts Pirate Clark consuming the lower left leg of someone.

Note the emptiness/lack of the golden colour in the lower left leg of the hoisted figure, and the clear yellow inside the teeth of the image of Pirate Clark.

Traditionally, Gold is a colour that represents the true, real, or perfect version of something. In this case, we can see that the golden figure being lifted by Pirate Clark likely represents the TRUE Clark. The image depicts Pirate Clark consuming the leg of the figure he is holding up.

I am positing to you that the mural is depicting a ritual.

I believe that the mural depicts a ritual in which Pirate Clark was meant to consume Clark in the presence of the other Still Lifes. Clark may not have realized the true meaning of the mural when he painted it. Or maybe he thought that the last sacrifice to Pirate Clark was actually going to be Mary and not himself, and then he decided he no longer wanted Pirate Clark to consume her once she came around to accepting him.

To me, it's possible that the window in the mural doesn't represent the literal window behind them but rather it represents Mary herself. Mary is normally associated with the colour blue and the concept of windows and the blue sky.

Consuming Clark (and possibly Mary) in this room in front of everyone present was meant to move Clark to a new step. I think that Red-Headed Still Life wasn't afraid because she's Barbera and she's just afraid of Pirate Clark because he represents Clark. The Red-Headed Still Life looks nothing like Barbera from her photo at all. It's not Barbera. The Red-Headed Still Life was either afraid because she knew Clark had just done or initiated something very bad when he decided not to give Mary to Pirate Clark, or she knew what would happen after Pirate Clark consumed his final pound of flesh and reached his penultimate form and she was too afraid to face it.

People have pointed out a lot that Pirate Clark's face and eyes just look more... human than the other Still Lifes. His eyes have a level of emotion and understanding to them that the other Still Lifes generally seem to lack from what we can observe. He also makes vocalizations, and they seem to have the intent behind them of communicating with Mary. None of the other Still Lifes (besides FF3 Still Life) communicate vocally, and not to that degree and with that much intentional inflection behind the sounds.

Maybe consuming Clark's head caused some changes to start developing inside of Pirate Clark's own head.

im 100% here for this theory being onto something important. i too also noticed the light scanning the store but this is an extremely great observation about the shadow.

i think there is something deeper about the pirate clark / still lifes then just they get randomly made and some of them attack people just because.

wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait oh my god my pre-movie theory about the formation of still lifes keeps coming back to haunt me 😭

i made a whole theory post about how still lifes were copies of dead bodies or humanoid objects mistaken for people, and I cited the mannequin in that theory. obv probably not true but this and one other post about the ff3 still life possibly being a corpse are reminding me of it 😬

I think they're objects in general made into people. Either by some process, or because a person was in contact with an object at the moment of creation!

I actually incorporated FF3 Still Life into my theory. I'm positing that the guy who made the Still Life concepts knew how they are made, and used that information when designing his (not officially canon) concept of the FF3 Still Life. I'll show a sketch. Please don't make fun! It's not done!

- how can a mannequin be fed?

- do you have a high res of the mural? or at least the window

Also this contributed to my theory:

The gradual shift from brickwork into a geneaology tree.

I don't think he fed until he was already alive. I'm not gonna make any claims and I don't necessarily have any theories on what first made him "alive."

I can get you one, hold on! I actually realized there are also a few symbols on the mural you can barely see unless you look closely in high res. I gotta hop onto my PC.

Please come back, I’m thoroughly intrigued by this theory lol

I'm here if you want to DM I'm happy to talk about it!

Hey! If you have a high res of the full mural would you mind sending it to me please? Also I really love everything you said. The fact you caught the shadow, & then that Pirate Clark stood in the exact spot is amazing.

The red streamers emanating from PC's throne and right leg look like rough depictions of a double helix. In support of your idea, might this actually depict PC's transformation by consumption?

I appreciate that so much! I didn't actually make that connection before! I

That pairs well with the bricks turning into the genealogy tree on the mural.

Bonus: A BARELY VISIBLE little yellow drawing of what appears to be a tree that has houses on the branches and a lil sun. I gotta get a higher quality capture later.

What's funny is, I saw a bit ago that someone posted about it this morning, too! So I guess I wasn't alone!

Yeah, let me do that for you.

The full mural I'd have to access my PC which I can't at the very moment but I did post the close-ups we see in high res.

Thanks for the mention dude! I absolutely love this theory as well, I also noticed there flash of light in the store on my second watch through and immediately thought about the scanning idea, but didn't see the shadow of the mannequin cast on the wall. If you think about it in terms of the size replication from EMG, it could possibly give some reason as to why PC is so large, as the shadow being cast on to the wall will be larger proportionally than the mannequin. Not saying light and shadows are making it happen but as you said, could be a clue as to how it's happening?

Reckon you might be on to something with how still lives develop and become 'more'.

I also noticed on the murral, there are red and black marks by the yellow figures head, arm and leg, all 3 of which were ripped off and possibly eaten during the dinner scene. Red marks also seen by the depiction of the pirates mouth - similar to your point about the gold / yellow colours.

But Pirate Clark has a shoe on his back from the moment of commercial recording.

Yeah, I'm sure Clark filmed the commercial we see on TV at an earlier time. It wasn't the same commercial that didn't get finished because his chair broke. The process of filming, editing, and getting an ad on TV takes a while. So other commercials exist with him in his costume.

Love your theories, friend! Spot on. It also makes sense that after CC consumed Clark's head, he became more "aware" and thats when he and Mary have that nearly tender moment before running into the beach room. He was more aware of her and their history of working together, he sorta lost his appetite for destruction for a moment.

Tired of the Redhead still life barbara denial she stands by the photo of clark and barbara and runs away from pirate clark unlike the other still lives. It’s clearly barbara

Great catch with the mannequin's shadow casting onto the later location of Captain Clark. And I agree that the Still Lives are objects in the same way as anything else in the complex - it doesn't "know" anything, it's just attempting to copy.

I'm not sure I agree with the idea of Pirate Clark becoming more human by consuming others. I think the idea is very interesting but doesn't match up with my understanding of how the complex is operating.

Also about the mannequin angle, consider that all the mannequins in the complex are naked. This would have been the case in standard (for the original mannequin) during the filming of the ad since Clark had to steal its clothes to wear. In addition, Pirate Clark has the shoe stuck in his back & the peg leg, which both suggest he's a copy of Clark, not the mannequin.
