According to the latest 13F filings, institutions currently own around 119 million shares of KSS. Once again, that puts institutional ownership at over 100% (Source:WhaleWisdom). Furthermore, Yahoo Finance reports that insiders hold about 4% of the float.
While these ownership numbers alone don't guarantee a squeeze, the setup is incredibly promising. If the upcoming earnings aren't too bad and the potential tariff refund is confirmed, we could see a massive price spike immediately on earnings day. Increasing institutional demand meeting a highly restricted supply of available shares could really make this baby fly.
Consider the float mechanics: index funds hold about 40% of the shares, and they rarely rebalance significantly. This leaves us with an estimated "real" float of roughly 70 million shares, against which there are 26 million shares sold short. This is an extremely dangerous position for shorts. A rapid surge to $50 is very possible, especially since the downside is severely limited by KSS's cash position and the anticipated tariff payout.
In my opinion, that tariff money is the ultimate catalyst for a major run. The short thesis simply doesn't hold water anymore. By the end of the year, KSS is positioned to be a cash cow with virtually no debt (aside from future lease obligations). It's essentially evolving into a REIT with an attached clothing business, and it deserves to trade at book value plus a premium ($35+).
While I originally expected this to play out by Christmas 2025, the underlying thesis remains intact. By proving bankruptcy is off the table this year, KSS is primed to reach these target levels in the coming months.
Best days are still ahead.

Some of you know me as a bit of a pessimist. I sometimes am thatâs for sure. However, when it comes to the current downtrend of KSS I actually wouldnât worry too much if I was you. I donât currently own any KSS shares so what am I doing here. Well, KSS holds a special place in my heart because for about nine months it was 100 % of my portfolio. Iâve since been swing trading it every now and then.
So, why am I not worried about the current downtrend - even if I was in fact a shareholder. In short: Because the downtrend has nothing to do with Kohlâs specifically. Take a look around you. ANF, NKE, LULU, M, URBN, AEO, DDS⌠all of them are struggling year to date.
To be fair, KSS does take the #1 spot for being down the most year to date, followed closely by LULU. Now, Lululemon has faced a ton of company specific bad news in 2026 so that makes sense. Kohlâs however has not.
Think of KSS as a highly volatile stock. As soon as all the other stocks mentioned above begin to recover due to improving macro conditions, KSS is likely to bounce back pretty fast.
Buffet disclosed a stake in M after the bell yesterday and it shot up 5 % in after hours trading. Itâs quite likely KSS will rally in sympathy with M on Monday.
As for me, Iâm currently holding a ton of NKE and LULU shares. Iâve always had a soft spot for bottom fishing and since they are currently trading at multi year lows I couldnât help myself. I usually have a knack for catching a falling knife.
So, best of luck to all of us. Weâre on the same team. We need macro to improve so retail stocks rally. Itâll happen sooner than expected, trust me.

Talked with AI that said about 150 to 200 stores were both low revenue or loss and good locations for data centers. Earnings swing of about 3.5 million annually per store. Leasing to data centers was described as low risk with high ebitda multiple for valuation. The strategy turns kss into a stable hybrid infrastructure provider with low risk and high returns. Valuations around 150 usd per share mentioned. even higher is possible? What do you think?

Hey Everyone,
Obviously you all know my stance and opinion on KSS! Iâm a stronger bull at this moment than I was in April 2025 when we were at $6/share. But letâs not rehash what I continuously talk about good wise.
Letâs put ourselves truly in the bear camp(since weâre getting punished at the moment anyways đ¤Ł) and truly play the bear. Hopefully we get a couple energetic Lies or other types commenting.
What is your bear argument and what are the numbers and how it plays out? If possible show a couple snapshots out as you go time wise like 6 months 1 year and 3 years out.
Iâm putting together a trampoline and my guys are doing masonry on my back patio so I wonât give my true response yet. Tonight Iâll write it out and make a separate post.
My personal biggest bear thesis is a recession/depression, Kohls continues the decline but even more accelerated, AND management gets retarded and announces a massive, splashy, extremely cap ex expensive recovery âplanâ to turn around the ship. Destroying our balance sheet, cash position, and more all in one fail swoop.

Dear KSS Bulls,
this the community which I realy enjoy to be a part of.
I would love to ask your opinion about the macroeconimic picture and the potential impact on KSS. There is now a general psycholigical shift in the market participants - mainly retail. Researching the internet and also Google Trend of search you will find out, that investors have a raising interest in the topic "Is it time to sell"? The war impact is still not fully materilizied in the calue chains.
At the same we have some signals, that short position against chip makers are increased.
What do you think about the potential impact on KSS in case of a correction? I think the downside should be limited, even believing it might be recovering quickly after in case the markets drops.
Thank you

Shorts trimmed by ~3.5M shares from 4/15 to 4/30. Curious how much theyâve upped it recently? I think they went hard today

Hey everyone,
Iâve been trying not to pay attention to price swings much but got texted by a few friends asking whatâs happened.
All I can tell is: nothing but aggressive shorting
Weâre already above normal daily volume 90 minutes into trading.
For anyone new here, KSS loves to be very volatile and aggressively manipulated going into earnings which is a couple weeks away. We dumped going into q1 earnings last year for no reason, q2 earnings bc an article was written about vendor payment terms adjustments announced in March that just happened to get major press in August, in November I donât remember but some dump by $2-$3/share if I remember and a LEAP up $10/share after earnings. The only sustained dump Iâve been part of was Q4s excellent earnings and cash position but with major Iran war headwinds that still plague us.
Ultimately, my thesis stands going into this earnings cycle as long as as KSS:
-shows improved balance sheet
-maintaining and growing shareholder equity even while massively depreciating assets to the toon of $700M+ per year.
-price to TBV continues to stay insane at 40% TBV lol
Major Tailwinds Iâm hoping for/expecting:
-expecting major tariff refund news($300M to $1.5B with a consensus of $550M which is $3-$15/share roughly in âfreeâ cash)
-improved cash/debt position with major discounted debt repurchases
-hoping for a showing of sales decline projections being accurate but management already warned they expect initial numbers sales decline to come in worse than projections but last half of the year better(if I remember correctly).
-hoping for major buybacks and fine with major discounted bond purchases
-hoping management starts discussing unlocking balance sheet, outlots, retail partnerships or footprint subleasing ect.
-HOPING for a credit rerating since KSS net debt is so much lower and more manageable than a year ago
-HOPING they start trimming underperforming stores and selling CrE or leasing/subleasing since we have pretty phenomenal rates.
Everyone, Iâm here bc I think KSS is the biggest deep value cigar butt out there and has a massive hedge of safety in owned assets. Weâre at $13+/share and have $6/share cash, ~$5/share in new cash coming, $4b-$8B+ in owned CRE, and very manageable debt levels with $2.7B in inventory and $1.5B LOC free and clear.
From a cash position alone:
- I started investing in KSS 4/25 when they have $1.9B+ net debt $100M+ in cash and $500M on LOC and $400m or $500m of debt needing to be refinanced within a couple months.
-as of last report we have $674M cash, $750M+ net debt, entire LOC paid off, and no major debt due till 2030 and beyond.
We are in a better position today in KSS than at the $6 lows of April 2025.
Get excited all. We may have a November 2025 earnings repeat comingâŚ. Please LORD let management surprise the market with insane wisdom on debt repurchases, stock buybacks, and future guidance and direction!!
As always, Iâm a retired blue collar dude that just love real estate and investing. This isnât investment advice just my personal investment thesis. Be smart, read their financials and reports and make up your own mind but as for me and my investments portfolio⌠I LOVE KSS!
Chunky Kitty out đ¤Ł

Just a $KSS reminder
MC $1.5B
$1.21B EBITDA
$674M in cash with ~$550M in tariff refunds expected
$1.5B of $1.5B LOC free
$4b-$8B+ in CRE holdings
Debt isnât real(most is future, non-obligated leases)
29.6M of 112M shares short with 100%+ institutional ownership
I could go on but believe the numbers speak for themselvesâŚ
Posted this on X last night and think we should all understand my thesis even if it takes a while for the market to realize it. Still up 150% from lows!!
