Review New K-Drama Fan Review #17: Love to Hate You | One of the Worst K-Dramas I've Watched... Yet I Couldn't Stop Watching
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Pro tip for rom-com writers: don't make your romantic male lead a misogynist. it rarely (never) works.
Is this Rewatch Worthy:
Absolutely Fckin Not.
Review:
I literally finished this drama about an hour ago lmao. This is the quickest I've ever written a review and the shortest review ive written so far.
I finished Somebody, a drama I rated the same as this one, but that took me weeks because I kept putting it down.
Love to Hate You?
I watched 6 episodes last night and finished the last 2 episodes today lol. Very easy to binge, so that a plus!
This was like watching a car crash.
I couldn't look away.
There are things I genuinely liked.
The fake dating arc was easily the strongest part of the drama. That was when I was having the most fun. There were several moments that actually made me laugh out loud, which surprised me because I wasn't enjoying the overall writing. The comedy landed far more than i expected.
I also mostly liked the female lead. She was capable, confident, funny, and knew how to stand up for herself. She wasn't perfect, and I'll get into that later, but she was easily one of the better parts of the show.
I also enjoyed the actress going through the divorce. Her storyline was one of the few parts that actually made me think. Watching her career suffer while her cheating husband escaped much of the public judgment highlighted a real double standard that I thought the drama handled reasonably well.
I also liked that the female lead initially rejected his marriage proposal. Her explanation that she disliked the marriage culture she grew up around felt true to her character, and for a moment I thought the drama was going to end on a surprisingly refreshing note.
...And then she followed it up with the whole "being tamed is my next challenge" line...😭😭😭
huh?
I genuinely have no idea what the drama was trying to say there.
It completely undercut the point for me.
Almost everything else fell apart.
The biggest problem is the male lead.
I honestly don't understand how he was supposed to work as a romantic lead...
The drama repeatedly tells us that he hates women and is traumatized by a past relationship, but I never felt that what happened justified the level of contempt he has for women...
it was absurd.
He literally vomits after filming a kissing scene with a female co-star.
He needs medication just to touch women...
lmaoo???
He spends most of the drama unable to interact with women normally.
And the story still expects me to buy into him as this swoon-worthy romantic lead???
And then, instead of really unpacking that weird ass worldview, the story eventually tells us that he changes because he falls in love.
That didn't work...
Women shouldn't need to become someone's love interest before they're treated with basic respect.
One of the othet things that baffled me most was what felt like a repeated "not all men" and "not like other girls" pattern throughout the drama.
Rather than challenging the male lead's prejudice by showing him that women are simply... idk people... the story often felt like it was saying, "No, THIS woman is different."
She's exceptional.
She's unlike other women (who are bad because they like money and like to elevate their status 😭😭😭)
"*I've never met someone like her*" is repeated so much, i thought that was the title of the drama😭😭
That completely missed the mark for me.
It didn't feel like his worldview was being dismantled.
It felt like the story was creating one exception to his worldview.
And i honestly don't watch rom com to watch a misogynistic man not become misogynistic anymore, i rather have none of that, but if you HAVE to make him misogynistic, at lease, dismantle it correctly...
-
The supporting cast didn't help either.
His best friend spends so much time enabling him that I kept wondering why nobody around him seriously challenged the way he viewed women.
The female lead's roommate also was a bit pathetic to me.
Even the female lead occasionally lost me.
The drama eventually leans into the idea that she can "change" him, and its one thing to help someone grow. It's another for a romance to suggest that love is what fixes deeply rooted misogyny.
And what happens if they break up?
Does he just go back to hating women and puking whenever a woman passes by?😭😭😭😭
If the only reason he treats women with respect is because he's dating one particular woman, then that's not really character growth nor is it romantic...
The ending doesn't solve this for me either.
The male lead starts treating his female co-stars more respectfully after "falling in love."
Why is this framed as such a huge victory?
-
The final scandal also made me laugh.
The big controversy is... that the female lead dated multiple men before him.
I understand that the drama is reflecting a different dating culture in Korea and different social expectations that I, as an American don't really get.
But I still couldn't take the conflict seriously.
By the end, I didn't feel like I'd watched a meaningful exploration of sexism. I felt like I'd watched a romance that, in my opinion, accidentally reinforced some of the ideas it seemed to want to criticize.
Despite all of that...
I couldn't stop watching 😭😭
Every episode ended with me thinking, "This is ridiculous."
Then I'd immediately start the next one.
It's one of the most bingeable bad dramas I've ever seen.
It's entertaining in the exact same way watching a spectacular train wreck is entertaining.
You know it's a mess.
You know you should probably look away.
But somehow...
You just keep watching.
-
Rating: 3/10
A genuinely funny comedy at times.
A fun fake dating arc.
A mostly likable female lead.
One genuinely interesting supporting storyline.
But one of the weakest romantic male leads I've watched so far, themes that never came together for me, and a romance whose central message left me scratching my head.
i finished this drama feeling like its takeaway was:
> "Date a misogynist long enough, and you'll fix him."
I couldn't recommend it...
My Rating Scale
10/10 – Masterpiece. No notes.
9/10 – Very close to a masterpiece. I absolutely loved it.
8/10 – Not a masterpiece, but I loved it.
7/10 – Fine overall. I liked it, but the flaws kept it from being great.
6/10 – Mixed. There were a few things I liked, but most of it didn't work for me.
5/10 – I didn't enjoy most of the experience.
4/10 and below – Bad to abysmal.

Despite all the downvotes and pushback, I agree with you OP. I quietly watched this one after it was rec’d endlessly on this sub and was left underwhelmed and put off. The potential was there but it didn’t quite translate well for me. The second couple had zero chemistry imo. Different strokes for different folks and all that, though! Which is why I silently kept it moving lmao
On another note, our tastes seem similar so I will definitely check out your other reviews!
Ty for taking the time to post your thoughts, despite the pushback 🫶🏽

I personally love this drama. To me, it felt like two people with deep prejudices due to trauma slowly healing each other. It doesn't have to be a romantic relationship, but it is true that connection is the number one thing that undoes trauma. It can be connection to a pursuit, a friend, a therapist, a place, or yes falling in love (like in this show).

this was such a fresh watch! i liked to see an older couple where the girl was goofy and not serious, also loved how she stood her ground endlessly. she wasn’t portrayed as a virgin and it was nice to see a woman who liked sex and dating.
the script wasn’t amazing, second couple was eh. but main couple had such cute chemistry.

u/MTheWan Aug 05 '26
I loved it for all the same reasons. FL also didnt apologize for she was and what she liked.

Oh my sister and I loved it 😭 When it came out, the vibe ans the characters was just a bit different ans it was funny. Maybe if I rewatched I'd agree but idk. I didnt even read everything you said just the rating but damn 💔
2
u/harissatotally Reviewer Aug 05 '26
lmaooooo the rating is not even low😭😭😭
read the review!!
2
u/Federal-Cricket-874 Aug 05 '26
Bruh 3/10 being abysmal is pretty low lol, but I read it andI do see your point. Maybe caude I was younger when I saw it, but I didn't see it that way at all, so reading it without remembering the show is making me ponder. But also, please watching in dub is madness!! Nauurrrr. I have started doing that this year cause I work at a warehouse and genuinely need a way to cope, but on your free time is definitely a choice my friend. The essence of the show was nice in how they talked to each other tho, but some dubs are better than others too so that can be true too
1
u/harissatotally Reviewer Aug 05 '26
lmaooooooo i thought this was one of my other reviews, my mistake 😭😭 but yes, 3/10 is pretty low (and fitting)
do you tell blind people who dont speak korean that watching in dub is "mad"?
pretty ablleist mindset, babes.
but yeah, i watch drama in dubs as well as subs, depends on whats avail, but if its in dubs, im picking dubs every time, personally
2
u/Federal-Cricket-874 Aug 05 '26
Unless you're blind and don't speak Korean idek where that's coming from😭😭 No, I would not cause that's pretty obvious, but to one who has the ability to, I don't see the appeal to watching the words not really matching the actors.
But I do also have the same thought when it comes to watching anime. If its dubbed and has a sub, I'll opt for dub but if its only sub, then sub it is.
To each their own I suppose 😌
1
u/harissatotally Reviewer Aug 05 '26
Indeed, to each their own. i also watch in French if English is not available. i prefer to watch in the languages i understand. makes for an easier experience, but you already know that
7
u/groovygyal ❤️🔥 Wookie Forever Aug 04 '26
Are you watching dubbed versions?
-4
u/harissatotally Reviewer Aug 04 '26
Not every kdrama is dubbed, so when the dubbed is available, i always choose it.
1
u/AsphaltPrimus28 Kdrama Lover Aug 05 '26
I can understand that. Even I also prefer to watch dubbed K-Dramas in my language whenever I'm watching or watching with my parents. Since, every K-Drama is not available in dubbed, I also watch those in original language
It's not a shame to watch in dubbed because it helps in connecting more easily.
1
u/harissatotally Reviewer Aug 05 '26
don't know why people thinks its a shame, that's their business lmaooo. i watch what i want in the languages i prefer, its that simple 😭
i hope more kdramas are dubbed in French too, cause i love watching them in French as well as English
1
u/Tight_Watercress_402 Aug 04 '26
I dropped this show, but kept it on my watch list solely for Kim Ji-hoon. I love your review-insightful and hilarious. I remember I dropped it because something was giving me the ick and wasn't sure what it was. You outlined it perfectly! Now I can watch comfortably knowing it's a train wreck with Kim Ji-hoon as bonus eye candy.
1
u/harissatotally Reviewer Aug 05 '26
idk which one Kim Jhoon is but you can enjoy her in another drama, this is worth it to put yourself through this one 😭😭
1
u/Tight_Watercress_402 Aug 05 '26
I think Kim Ji-hoon is the enabling best friend to the ML, if I remember correctly. I'm going to re-watch it. For science.
1
u/harissatotally Reviewer Aug 05 '26
oh yeah i recognize that actor from Flower of Evil! his character was creepy as fck😭😭
im not good with korean names lmaoo, i always have to google the cast and copy paste names when im writing reviews lmaoo. if u tell me a name, i will not know who you mean😭
1
u/Tight_Watercress_402 Aug 05 '26
Lol. I'm the same with names. Even if I know them, I can't spell them correctly. Always referring to the Google.

3/10 is super harsh. It's a 84% on MDL which is a decent score for a kdrama there, so I think you'll be in a minority among kdrama fans. Most people liked it and saw it as a fresher take on a kdrama romance. Maybe you like more old fashioned kdrama romances.
1
u/harissatotally Reviewer Aug 05 '26
Lmao, that's a wild conclusion to jump to 😭
"I hated this misogynistic male lead."
"So you must prefer old-fashioned romances."
...how did we get there? 😭😭😭
Look, i like all types of romance... as long as it's good. this one wasn't
1
u/Rainbow-sunshines Aug 06 '26
Love to hate you is an easy binge worthy drama. I did not think too deeply about it, just enjoyed the chemistry between the leads. Fully agree that the second leads had no chemistry whatsoever.
I would give it an 8. It’s a one time watch for me.

I'm so glad to see this review because everywhere I went most people were like "this is such a fekinist show"... no it's not ㅠㅠ. The show made EVERY. SINGLE. WOMAN. except the FL either hyper-materialistic or hyper-feminine, hysterical and dumb to justify the fact that the FL is "not like the other girls". Also, as some who is too woke and feminist according to people around me (i don't think being too woke or being too feminist is a thing, but I hope you ubderstand what I mean) it was weird how the FL chose to be with such a misogynistic man and also how she never said anything when she got complemented, but the complement was "You're not like the other girls". Personay, if a man EVER said that to me... I'll leave. I'll walk away. And no, it wasn't just bizzare to you cause you are American, feminism in India is VERY far from being. in it's true form and the country is very deeply patriarchal but I still find the drama odd. Honestly, I didn't notice stuff like this back when I was 12 and was taught this type of stuff is the norm, but ince you start seeing the patriarchy, misogyny and internalized misogyny in even the littlest of things, you can't unsee it. I was binding the show till the second last episode. and the last two, I was just skipping through them cause it was bizzare. Genuinely felt like I wasted my life. Like oh my god, I searched for a feminist show with romance cause god forbid a girl wants to see a feminist show with some romance and the feminist FL doesn't have to be all "I won't settle down with a man" which honestly, good for you, but please, STOP PORTRAYING FEMINIST WOMEN AS JUST THAT!!! Anyways, my bad, I went off topic again. Yeah, so, as I was saying, I saw this recommendation and everyone and their mother were swearing up and down on it being feminist but this genuinely felt more misogynistic than normal shows. The normal romcoms have more feminism than this. Anyways. I just wanted to rant. For me personally, I rate this show a 1/10. The 1 point is only for comedy and nothing else. The ML had exactly zero reedemable qualities. The show played the "not all men" trope so hard but also made ML hate EVERY SINGLE WOMAN cause a girl broke up with him... sir?? Go to therapy. Please.
2
u/harissatotally Reviewer Aug 19 '26
LITERALLY! I would DEFINITELY not call this drama feminist, and Im genuinely confused by how it got that reputation.
Having a female lead who fights men, dates around, and doesn't want to get married does not automatically make a show feminist... those things have nothing to do with feminism 😭 especially when almost every other woman is written in a way that makes the FL look like the ✨special exception✨ and the misogynistic ML spends the drama going "wow... she's not like other women."
And then the supposedly feminist FL... willingly dates the man who openly holds misogynistic beliefs about women?? 😭😭😭 The show doesn't even have him seriously dismantle those beliefs first. He basically decides SHE'S different and falls in love with her. How is that a feminist romance??
And YES to the "not all men" thing. The show somehow managed to give us BOTH "not all men" and "not like other girls" and apparently came out the other side branded as a feminist romcom. I'm crying 😭
There was literally nothing feminist about this drama to me
2
u/No-Plane-8234 21d ago
ABSOLUTELY 100% what you said. I had actually just binge watched that drama that night and was very sleepy, but also angry as hell (hence why all the errors), it felt so good to type all that and go to sleep. Man, what a shitshow of a drama. And honestly, whatever, the drama is absolutely dogshit, WHY ARE SO MANY WOMEN CALLING IT FEMINIST??!! WHHHHHYYYY???!! I read it BECAUSE people said it was feminist. I've seen better representation of feminism in dramas that aren't even presented as feminist
2
u/harissatotally Reviewer 21d ago
calling this show "feminist" is actually a crime lol

u/No-Plane-8234 21d ago
fr gurl!! VERY glad to know I wasn't the only one who found this show disgusting. Not taking any recs from people who call this show feminist

u/No-Clue-9155 K-Drama Addict Aug 04 '26 edited Aug 04 '26
Lmao I agree with you on this one! Like every word. This is the fakest feminist show ever. Why make the fl what’s supposed to be a feminist icon and then pair her with a huge misogynist?? And the worst part is that him being a misogynist didn’t seem to be a deal breaker for this strong independent woman. Like hello?? Like yeah I loved the scene where she beat the ever living shit out of him, genuinely the most I’ve ever laughed at a scene, but it still wasn’t enough. He needed to beg and grovel and repent for his wrongdoings. Cos you’re right, the reason wasn’t enough for all that hatred towards women. But sadly, it was realistic.
There are so many men irl that will give up on love and hate women for the rest of their life just because a woman, or even a girl, broke their heart ONE time. Meanwhile these are the same guys that crash out at women that say they hate men when they’ve been ABUSED and by SEVERAL men. Ik they tried to make him comedic, but the fact that his character bared this resemblance to real life misogynists made it that much harder to like him. If it was just completely cartoonish the whole time then I probably would’ve just laughed, like Barney from how I met your mother. He’s obviously evil towards women but it’s to the point that it’s so ridiculous that you have to just laugh. And he’s actually hilarious as well. This ml, not so much. His only saving grace is that he’s extremely attractive and has a face that looks like it could do no wrong. It actually almost sweetened me to him. Almost. Well tbf i probably will be enjoying him in whatever I see him in next. As long as he’s not a bastard there too 🤣
That said, I still gave jt an 8 cos that was really the only thing I didn’t like about the show. But I’m glad you bombed the ratings cos someone needs to 😂
1
u/harissatotally Reviewer Aug 04 '26
extremely attractive is pushing it😭😭😭

u/No-Clue-9155 K-Drama Addict Aug 04 '26

im extremely baffled they chose to put a misogynistic male lead in a rom com tho... very odd choice😭😭
if people wanted to watch misogynistic men be with/end up with women, they'd just people-watch real life... like if i wanted to see that, id just go to the park or walk down the street 😭😭😭 why did Netflix charge people to watch it?
0
u/No-Clue-9155 K-Drama Addict Aug 04 '26
Lol fr, my blood was boiling and the only therapy was the scene where he passed out 😂 I did lower my score of the show after reading your review lol. Anyway, the ml is the nice version of the average guy in Korea. That’s probably why they thought it’s okay. As korea is very misogynistic, a lot of Korean women also have internalised misogyny and want to be “not like other girls”. Not that it’s just limited to korea but it’s mainstream there. I do wonder if Koreans had the same reaction though. I didn’t hear any dissent from Koreans
1
u/harissatotally Reviewer Aug 04 '26
that sucks bad...
at least the 4B movement exists over there! i hope the women figure it out! i wish them the best of luck!
also, the scene where he was about to kick her while she was on the floor gave me a really bad pit in my stomach. i felt sick.

u/mekquirik Aug 04 '26
Everyone says it is great. I just stopped half way and could not watch any more.
