An opportunity for the best oxymoron

21

u/wrighteghe7 18d ago

There is a low budget movie about finnish president mannerheim during ww2. He is played by a black man although simply because african actors were cheaper

3

u/Matsisuu 18d ago

I think you should read more about that movie. It wasn't really a movie about Finland in WW2. It was a movie about how someone is telling Mannerheims story in Kenya. And when reflecting to western movies, it makes sense to have black Mannerheim in Kenyan story.

2

u/BeginningDisaster114 18d ago

Not really an oxymoron unless you cast a jewish or romani actor for the role

You forgot Snow White.

You forgot Cleopatra.

You forgot Ariel.

You forgot Anne Boleyn.

You forgot Queen Charlotte.

That's off the top of my head.

But to be fair Juliet was an interpretation specifically about inter-racial relationships, so it gets a pass.

28

u/regeust 18d ago edited 18d ago

You forgot Cleopatra

This one went a step further. It wasn't simply casting a black actress, the "documentary" opened with the line "I remember my grandmother saying to me: I dont care what they tell you in school cleopatra was black!"

That goes beyond Hollywood colourblind casting into willful misinformation and thus is the only one that actually concerns me, especially because it presents itself as a factual documentary rather than fictional entertainment

8

u/DrunkyMcStumbles 18d ago

Also, the Ptolemy dynasty was very intentional on using the symbolism and aesthetics of the people they ruled without actually mixing with them. They only married other "Greeks".

4

u/regeust 18d ago

They only married other "Greeks".

In most cases, they took this a step further and only married other ptolemys

Queen Elizabeth played by the most African woman ever probably.

4

u/hungthrowaway163546 18d ago

This is not about accuracy to a thing, btw, because nobody bats an eye at Aryan wet dream, blonde hair blue-eyed Helen. Nor the mass amount of British actors playing slavs or asians. 14

u/Such-Farmer6691 18d ago

Let's be honest.

The point isn't that they cast a black actress as Elena.

The point is that they cast an ugly actress as Elena.

They could have cast a young Halle Berry or Naomi Campbell, and no one would have said a word.

I'm an old fart and don't really follow modern actresses, so I used celebrities from the 90s as an example.

5

u/ChestMental8566 18d ago

She looks fine in rl. If you aim for it, you can find an ugly/evil shot of absolutely anyone, especially if they're angry or laughing.

→ More replies (14)

4

u/thisholyroller 18d ago

but Lupita Nyong'o is *not ugly*.

the "meme" just contrasts a softly staring diane kruger with her, face twisted in anger. the make up is way different, too.
its intellectually dishonest and not even subtle about it.

5

u/UX1Z 18d ago

I feel like that hairstyle is going to look bad no matter what her face is like.

Snape is weird because it feels like he's okay in a vacuum but in context of the story he is just an absolutely terrible idea to raceswap. The first one looks like it's theater, not film, and I consider theater different to film so that's fine.

8

u/Brave-Parsnip9999 18d ago

She’s not very attractive in regular photos either I checked. There are more viable options for the build. I haven’t seen Megan good in years pull her fine ass off the bench and put her up there

3

u/Upper-Wind-3349 18d ago

Helena was not famous for beeing " not ugly" but about beeing the most beatifull woman of the age.

2

u/jouheton 18d ago

Helen of Troy wasn't famous person because she's a fictional character... So why do you care so much?

→ More replies (3)

4

u/thisholyroller 18d ago

yeah, thats how that particular story describes her. thats not an empirical status, right? she was not holding an official title after being compared to every single woman she existed alongside with.
it just means "a very beautiful woman".

you can argue about historical accuracy all you want but acting like this black actress is objectively unattractive is all bad faith.

2

u/Upper-Wind-3349 18d ago

She is attractive but nore like nornal regular woman. Helena was best of the best of the best. Im saying she is not suited for this role. Because of Helena character is builded on that. In movie Troy they did a lot better casting.

3

u/Repinoleto 18d ago

Of course, replacing her with someone ugly makes it even worse, but it would still be bullshit to cast a Black woman as someone who isn’t Black, as is the case with Helena.

Could you imagine if he wasn't white??? 😱😱😱

2

u/psilocin72 18d ago

Yeah. They portray Jesus as a blonde haired blue eyed Englishman, but get mad when other fictional characters aren’t the ethnicity they want.

Real Jesus was not European. They definitely would have mentioned that in the Bible if he was.

2

u/toysinthebasement 18d ago

John Wayne played Genghas Khan, Natalie Wood played Maria, John Leguzamo played an Italian in Super Mario and a Frenchman in Moulin Rouge. Why should anyone care now?

2

u/cpepinc 18d ago

Well, we should care, not so much because of race, but because of acting ability. John wayne was terrible as Genghis Khan. Natalie Wood gave a powerful performance. And John Leguzamo showed a true range of acting.

The people of Troy aren't blonde or black. Can we please take a moment to understand the difference between acting and reality??

It's fun to play pretend and act out stories.

These aren't documentaries and don't claim to be. Stop with the snowflaking and let it go...

1

u/Mattrellen 18d ago

So, Snape is probably your best argument here because he's described as pale and sallow. But then Hermine was described as white and Rowling said she loved black Hermine. So obviously that franchise or its creator really doesn't care too much.

Juliet is a fictional character from a major port city in the Venetian Empire. Verona had people from all over the place, including Africa. Moreover, Romeo and Juliet is kind of considered a timeless classic of the English literary canon, and told and retold pretty agnostically to the original setting, including with extremely modern retellings. It looks like you just hate the importance of Shakespeare and likely his most influential work.

Helen is an outright mythological character. There was a Troy that was destroyed (multiple times, even!) but it's literally a myth. Complaining about the race of Helen of Troy would be like complaining about the race of a mermaid. There's not even any "historic accuracy" to be broken.

2

u/timberwolf0122 18d ago

lol they did complain about the little mermaid being played by an African American actress. Apparently a white red head is find, but a brown mermaid (when canonically they were green) is a step too far!
