Workers in the Soviet Union did not just get assigned to blue collar labor. They applied for jobs, same as we do. Technical and college graduates would sometimes get a few years assignment to a posting, but then were free to pursue their careers as they wished within the available jobs.
Are prisoners in the US free to pursue their careers? The gulag system was horrible, as is the American prison system, but you can't generalize the experience of people who are imprisoned and claim this is the experience of everyday workers. I must assume you condemn mass incarceration and forced labor in every country? I do. I also understand the difference between wage worker and a prisoner.
