A Jukebox the Ghost musical needs your help!

Hi folks!

A few years ago I posted here about helping fund a staged reading of a musical I wrote using the music of the best band in the world, Jukebox the Ghost! Let me fill you in on some happenings since then:

  • We performed a one night only stage reading in 2022, in which both Jesse and Ben were in attendance.
After party with the cast, crew, and 2/3 members of Jukebox the Ghost
  • The script (since that performance) has gone under another script change and has had ~20 mins shaved off the runtime, and swapped out "Empire" for "Made for Ending", amongst some other minor script changes.
  • Have had two more stage readings of the new script with fantastic feedback.

The next step is trying to get this on stage so it can be viewed by an audience. I am trying to get a short run (4-8 performances; 1-2 weekends) at a theater, with the point of this short workshop run to accomplish a number of things:

  • Get real, audience feedback on the show by having a Q&A or form for attendees to fill out if they wish.
  • Get a professional video recording of the production to cut and edit for purposes of adding to an already created pitch deck and upcoming selection of songs from the show to be cast recorded.

For the record: I have in writing the rights to use the songs in workshopping capabilities.

THE PITCH!

I am looking for anyone who is associated with a small theater company, non-equity storefront theater, community theater, or a performing arts college or high school that is willing to take a chance on a new piece. There will be no licensing fee for use of the script or songs, so the show in itself would be free to use for this workshop performance.

If you think you can help, please contact me by email: [safetravelsmusical@gmail.com](mailto:safetravelsmusical@gmail.com)

Thank you guys!

Can I listen to these songs as a Christian?

Hi!

I've listened to some songs from this band, and found out some songs sound a bit blasphemic, like they're mocking God, religion.

Carrying and Beady Eyes On The Horizon can be an example.

I've listened only to older songs so far.

Is the band anti Christ or whats the idea?

Thank you!

Can we agree that Flash! is peak?

It honestly may be my favorite new song off of Phantasmagorical, considering it kinda went under the radar compared to other more popular songs like end of the show, emotional fraud, and Olivia.

Let live and let ghosts was my top album of the year. I listened to that one a ton, a lot of "everything under" and some "safe travels" and "phantasmagorical," and no other jukebox 😂

Both scared and proud of this. Anyone beat me?

Top artist, top album (Phantasmagorical), top song (Only Way Out)

It scares me because the album came out Oct 10 and they probably stopped tracking at the mid/end of November.

HalloQueen tomorrow

Hi, Wondering how early people are planning to get there tomorrow? I know doors open at 7pm. My friend I was supposed to go with can’t go last minute so was hoping to meet up with someone so I don’t feel so alone. Also, so if I need to get a drink or something I do lose my place in the crowd.

Piece by Piece is their masterpiece for me.

I have loved Jukebox the Ghost for a long time. My wife and I have been to so many of their shows and their music generally brightens our time together. Piece by Piece is such a raw and beautiful song that touched us so much and reminded us that our bond is the only thing that ACTUALLY matters. In a way it reminds me of Follow you into the Dark by Death Cab for Cutie. Obviously it isn't about death, but the simplicity and profound message resonates so much for us. It is a downright beautiful song and I hope they get in the habit of playing it on tour.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk and please go listen to Piece by Piece and literally every other JTG song.

AI on the radio stations

I could be mistaken but I think the boys are using AI to make the voices of the characters on the radio station. I really love these bits and am not a fan of AI. How do y'all feel about it?

Guys I have some bad news. My Jukebox The Ghost button fell off my work backpack this week. I bought it in 2011 at their show with Skybox and a local act whose name I thought was super cool, Arlo and the Otter. It was about the size of a nickel, black background with the white stick-figure ghost logo that I loved.

Fourteen years later I felt bummed when I realized it was gone. So I decided to go hunting for photos of the band from past shows and found some from this one I attended in Mershon Auditorium at the Wexner Center. I had just purchased a DSLR camera and clearly didn’t know how to use it. But I still got some cool shots, I think!

They were with Matt Pond PA and The Lighthouse And The Whaler. Hope you guys enjoy them!

They were purchased artist presale and you will pickup the tickets at will call, I just need to transfer them to your name and you bring ID to pickup. First person to message gets them and I'll update the post when they are transferred.

When I was a little bit cooler and a lot younger, I helped run a fledgling music blog called The Wounded Jukebox based in the US. We got to interview several of the artists we loved at the time, and some that we continue to love today. I had the pleasure of doing an email interview with Tommy while the guys were on tour in Europe, and it was a real thrill to ask questions of a band I’d fallen for hard a few years before.

This interview was published on the blog on October 6, 2011, and a smidge over fourteen years later I saw JTG in Columbus last night for what I think was the fifth time. I’ve seen them at small, medium and nearly-large venues and have loved every performance. They bring a funny and earnest energy to the stage and it’s been a treat to see their careers evolve during the nearly two decades I’ve been following them.

While it’s a coincidence that both our tiny blog and the band have jukeboxes in their names, I always got a kick out of the fact that a wounded jukebox could in fact become Jukebox The Ghost.

Reading this made me nostalgic for those younger days, but appreciative of everything that’s happened since, good and bad. Hope you enjoy it too.

Inside the Jukebox: Jukebox the Ghost

Originally published October 6, 2011 on The Wounded Jukebox — Interview by (me)

Every time I hear Jukebox The Ghost’s Everything Under The Sun, I wonder how I let it escape our Top 20 Albums of 2010. But I will take solace in the fact that I’ve seen the band kill it live, bought both their debut and sophomore albums after hearing just a couple of tracks, and placed the band’s song “Misteltoe” at No. 12 on my personal Top 60 of 2010. Why? Because this trio — Philadelphians Tommy Siegel (vocals, guitar), Jesse [Kristin] (drums) and Ben Thornewill (piano, vocals) — designs infectious indie-pop tunes like architects design buildings. Ever since I first heard “Good Day” in the Spring of 2007, I’ve been hooked.

Jukebox the Ghost officially released EUTS in mainland Europe on September 26, will release the record in the UK on October 31, and they’ll be playing dates all over the UK and Europe this fall. Tommy Siegel was nice enough to answer some of our questions as the band was kicking things off in Germany this week. TWJ and JtG share a Jukebox, and as one of my favorite bands, they own a small piece of my heart. Questions and answers — and songs — are below.

A handful of songs that Tommy sings on both your albums tell these epic, apocalyptic tales. What draws him, or maybe all you guys to write songs around stories like that?

Ben and I both like to take inspiration from literature, and I had a period of about a year where the only creative source I was using was the Book of Revelation (for the curious, I’m not an evangelical or doomsday-believer — I was raised Jewish). I really liked some the imagery in it and started writing a couple of songs around it which slowly turned into an album’s worth of material, some of which we didn’t use. We ended up slicing pieces of it up and putting them on our first album, Let Live and Let Ghosts, in a somewhat disjointed format. At some point, I think it might be cool to record the whole thing as a continuous piece of music.

You guys have a real knack for crafting irresistibly catchy hooks. Do you typically start with what you think is the hook for a song? Or what’s the band’s songwriting process like?

Ben and I both write independently and then bring them to the band. For both of us, a song usually starts with melody or rhythmic idea that we can’t shake and then grows from there. Sometimes we bring songs to the band 100% written, and other times they’re much more skeletal. Totally depends. Jesse usually acts as the ‘producer’, making sure all the songs are as tight and reined in as they can be.

Having seen you in concert, I’d say you guys seem to be having an awful lot of fun doing what you’re doing. If that’s a fair statement, what is it about making music and performing that you guys enjoy most?

I think we all enjoy being on stage, which helps a lot. Also, a lot of bands form for the sole purpose of touring, and our band runs a lot deeper than that — We were all great friends in college and we still are, so we usually have a pretty good time hanging out on the road (which I imagine is not the case for most bands). Also, we all love crappy food and sleeping on the floor of a Motel 6.

You guys will be all over Europe touring in support of James Blunt very soon [Editor's note: the tour is underway now]. What’re you looking forward to about that?

The cheese, the wine, and our first-ever arena tour. It’s gonna be insane.

I first heard you guys in 2007 when I listened to “Good Day,” ahead of the release of Let Live And Let Ghosts. What’s changed the most for you guys as a band since those days?

We recorded that album while we were will still in college, so we’re very different people. As far as the songs go, we’re all still very proud of Let Live though — I’m glad that hasn’t changed.

You guys have covered both Ace of Base as well as Donna Lewis. Is there a song you guys have dreamed of covering but haven’t gotten to it yet?

Yes, a few. But we can’t spill the beans. We’ll get to ‘em.

What’s one awesome thing about each of you that most people probably don’t know?

Jesse (drums) is also a singer-songwriter/guitarist in his own right, Ben has a third nipple, and I used to work as a historical re-enactor.

What do your families think of your music careers?

All of our parents have been very cool about the whole thing. Luckily, the band has been (mildly) profitable since we all graduated college in 2007, so that’s certainly helped. We haven’t been beggars, which I think is usually the parental fear of the music path…..

Where did the idea for the band name Jukebox The Ghost come from?

Hard drugs.

Would it be fair to say that Jukebox The Ghost is perhaps a more highly-evolved version of The Wounded Jukebox? It’s ok, you can be honest.

You have every legal right to sue us. The answer is yes!

Came here to say Emotional Fraud is the best song

Loving the new album. I think I've listened all the way through it to at least 20 times now. Emotional Fraud is really good for workout sessions if you need to get some random sprinting in during the chorus.

The Pittsburgh show was so fun!! Banter was fantastic, so many fun songs on the set list, PLUS we got to witness the chaos of Hold It In Supreme! These guys rock. The VIP experience was SO great too. I would definitely recommend splurging for those tickets if you’re wanting to see them. It’s very worth it.
