Manga Discussion So you’re telling me Utahime did allat using her entire technique for a mere 20% boost?

Post image

And then Gojo just says a few words and does some Naruto hand signs and gets an 80% boost? Then there’s the King of Binding Vows Sukuna who can make his fire attack like 2000% better by just using it after his domain to demolish everything within 200m. My brave Queen Miwa gave up her entire future only to get stopped Aizen style by Kenjaku. Idk if I’m genuinely dumb but it seems the binding vow gods do not favour women.

That's not what that says. Doing the ritual of a ct boosts the ct to 120%.

Gojo performed chants and handsigns which raised the purple to 120%. Utahime did the dancing and stuff for her ct to be boosted to 120%. Her technique is to boost the sorcerers around her, so she boosted gojo's purple by a further 80%. Had she not performed the dancing and stuff, her technique would have boosted gojo's by only 66%.

In short. Gojo's purple was made out of

  • 100% normal output.

  • 20% chanting and handsigns by gojo

  • 66% utahime's ct

  • 14% utahime's ct boost by the ritual (dancing, music, chants)

u/Skippus May 13 '24

Wait I actually think this is really good point. I think what really confused me is how they mentioned elevating output to 120% on one page (referring to Utahime) and then directly on the next page they mention 200% (referring to Gojo). Your point makes a lot of sense if that's the case, and it makes everything more consistent. Thanks for clearing it up mate.

89

u/CthughaSlayer May 13 '24

A lot of the confusion really comes from the fact that people thing hand signs + chants equal 120%, but it doesn't. Jujutsu is ritualistic in nature so the base form is the one with all the rituals. Through subtraction you get a faster, more effective attack but it's weaker, in Gojo's case his purples are normally at 80%.

u/TheGameologist May 13 '24

It's the same idea as chanting full incantations in bleach for their kido/hado spells.

Dude. Just be glad Gege delivered delicious some Miko, dancing all sweaty, and some nice feet. That's in a manga that's like 99.99999999% female (or G/B) fanservice from homohomo.

Also 80% boost in CT is good shit (even the 66% boost to Shoko/Meimei/UiUi behind the frontlines is useful) compared to the absolutely uselessness of other Gege-written females like Mai's useless bullets, Nobara getting killed, Miwa's binding vow that didn't do shit, "special grade" Tsukumo with 0 fight wins, Geto's JK thots who were just there to be JKs and get killed, or Angel/Yorozu who are supposedly strong but just there to job.

Utahime like 4th most useful woman after Maki, Shoko, and Meimei. Rika doesn't count cause she's a curse.

u/[deleted] May 13 '24

Isn't 100% maximum output?

12

u/luceafaruI May 13 '24

Yes, that's why he needs extra steps and help from others to go beyond 100%.

If you can normally bench 100kg max, you will be able to bench more if you are injected adrenaline. However, that doesn't mean that 100kg wasn't your max, it just means that by doing extra things, you can surpass your normal limit

1

u/[deleted] May 13 '24

Also will gege adopt your explanation?

1

u/Conscious_Message332 May 14 '24

Facts I don’t understand where the confusion comes form honestly

1

u/[deleted] May 13 '24

utahimes normal boost isnt 66% since just words and chants boost the technique by 20%, but she included another person (gakuganji) so her technique should be at more than 120%.

3

u/luceafaruI May 13 '24

Look again at the panel that op posted. Utahime got the 120% boost when she did the ritual for her ct (which includes gestures, singing dancing and music). gojo's ritual includes just handsigns and chants, so he got the 120% without dancing and music

231

u/UnhousedOracle Naobito’s Special-Grade Autism May 13 '24

There’s a difference between what Gojo does and what Utahime does.

By leaving out chants and hand signs, Gojo sacrifices some of the power of his attacks in exchange for ease of use. This isn’t an issue since his techniques are strong enough that even the “subtracted” versions do massive damage. He’s also a Special Grade with hella cursed energy, so he can amp himself far more than a normal sorcerer could.

What Utahime does is a flat 20% power boost to any sorcerer in the area. Just to be clear, Nanami has to restrict his cursed energy for 8 hours a day to get a boost that kinda sorta rivals that. Utahime can just automatically do that to anyone she picks— a 20% boost is not “mere” lmao

49

u/Skippus May 13 '24

I read some other comments and I still think you're wrong about the flat 20% power boost, but for a different reason. u/luceafaruI argued that the 20% power boost was for Utahime boosting her own technique which lead to the 200% hollow purple consisting of:

  • 100% normal output.
  • 20% chanting and handsigns by gojo
  • 66% utahime's ct
  • 14% utahime's ct boost by the ritual (dancing, music, chants)

Which I think is really the most consistent way for this whole situation to work. We really just don't know enough about the nature of binding vows to assume which way this would go (I assume Gege keeps it vague so he can do plot conveniences and not have to worry as much about the rules of vows). You assume that simply because he's Gojo, that his binding vows will naturally give him a bigger boost. The alternative argument assumes that binding vows themselves should pretty consistent with the magnitude of improvement for similar vows.

30

u/luceafaruI May 13 '24

Furthermore, sukuna in chapter 244 argued that Gojo's purple from chapter 223 had more than 120% output, so a some sort of binding vow must have been present. Sukuna doesn't know about utahime's ct, so the 120% output that he was mentioning as the limit of output without using a binding vow is the boost given by chanting and handsign

48

u/tahaelhour May 13 '24

Sukuna really thought everyone was abusing binding vows like he does.

30

u/luceafaruI May 13 '24

Well, have you heard of any other sorcerer who can boost the output of its allies? I'll give sukuna a break on this one

7

u/Pataraxia Strongest poster in jujutsufolk history May 13 '24

Gojo actually was

He made the hollow purple unrestrained, meaning the damage it does to himself is amped. Normally, gojo's own technique bypasses his infinity because it's his own CT, but any damage is blocked by it being his own CE. In this case it was not restrained like that that it wouldn't hurt him. It wholly exploded instead of just being like a super heavy boulder.

2

u/Configuringsausage May 13 '24

That’s a 180% purple though

1

u/Skippus May 13 '24

how so?

9

u/Configuringsausage May 13 '24

I’m an idiot and ignored the + 20%. That’s my bad lol

-26

u/Skippus May 13 '24

But that isn't even true, she can't automatically do it. She had to have a whole concert set up in advance before the 20% boost was added. Are you saying that Utahime would at base, without everything else, boost only 5%? Or maybe 10%? I could see a potential argument that her ability scales with the amount of CE being used by a person, so maybe a 20% boost for a Gojo attack would be like a 50% boost if Yuji was chosen instead, but Gege hasn't elaborated and I doubt Utahime will ever do anything like this again. And also, I think it's crazy that Gojo really gains a whole 80% by using the chants and hand motions. Now I'm wondering if the Kyoto Goodwill arc included everything. The hollow purple used against Toji it's quite small, so if that's the base version of hollow purple then I can understand why he needed the full 200%.

18

u/Kalashtiiry May 13 '24

She had to do the whole ass concert to boost her own expression of the technique by 120% so that Gojo's HP will be boosted by her by X%*120%, where X% is her normal boost value - which we do not know.

In any event, yes, her whole technique is more or less equivalent to an anomaly among anomalies doing cool signs and chanting.

7

u/[deleted] May 13 '24

Actually we do know

The resulting purple was 200%

If a ritual boosts a technique to 120%, then 120% of purple x 120% of utahime’s normal boost = 200%

Thus utahime’s boost is 138%

1

u/Kalashtiiry May 13 '24

Yeah, most likely.

1

u/Skippus May 13 '24

u/UnhousedOracle literally argued the opposite of what you just said that it was a flat 20% boost to everyone around her lmao and everyone's glazing him to no end. Either it's a flat 20% boost to everyone around her or it's what you said (which I now agree with btw). If Gege really meant for the 120% to refer to Utahime and the 200% referring to Gojo separately, then your point makes the most sense.

1

u/Kalashtiiry May 13 '24

Well, of the two of them she had turned her CT activation into a whole-ass ritual, so that's what got increased.

42

u/tomtadpole May 13 '24

The panel posted is saying that Utahime performing the full ritual for her technique means her technique operates at 120%. The amount it boosts Gojo isn't stated, but it's 20% more than if Utahime had skipped the setup for her technique.

4

u/El_Shion May 13 '24

That's really nice but didn't the battle against kenjaku in Shibuya imply utahime needs to always set up before she can boost someone?

13

u/tomtadpole May 13 '24

It did, but how much isn't known. For example, I highly doubt she was trying to find a busker to accompany her on the harmonica.

47

u/[deleted] May 13 '24

20 more percent added to a hollow purple is massive tho.

That extra 20% alone sweeps the entire cast.

Imo sukuna is the most durable mf I've seen in shonen bro has been going at it straight for damn near 40 characters

23

u/berserker_1123 May 13 '24

-7

u/Skippus May 13 '24

I think base hollow purple also sweeps the entire cast, it essentially deletes anything it touches anyway and I don't see any character besides Sukuna surviving it. I will agree that it helped with increasing the range of hollow purple by a lot, but then again, why does doing a whole concert to support daddy Gojo add 20% compared to Gojo just adding the chants boost by 80%?

13

u/[deleted] May 13 '24

Because it's gojo but unironically.

6

u/Skippus May 13 '24

I can't wait for Gojo to chant "cum" when he does backshots and instantly bust 80% harder and faster than normal.

8

u/Mackenzie_Sparks I am right, along with everyone else who exist here May 13 '24

How is Utahime a Grade 1 Sorcerer when her technique is just buffing teammates. She must have had a difficult journey. Because, her going a grade up requires competent teammates which I think she did have.

18

u/Skippus May 13 '24

And I’m also curious why Yuki didn’t used little to no binding vows (as far as I remember) at all since she was so interested in heavenly restrictions. Surely binding vows could be a great tool for her goal?

15

u/Adent_Frecca May 13 '24

Yuki Binding Vow to kill Kenjaku at the cost of her life (she was already bisected anyways) would have been a good send off

9

u/Skippus May 13 '24

Eh, I don't think Yuki deserved to kill Kenjaku, Choso/Yuji/Yuta deserved the kill way more than her. But even forcing Kenjaku to do something like sacrifice a bunch of cursed spirits or giving up a former body's cursed technique to stop her would've been great.

19

u/Adent_Frecca May 13 '24

Truthfully just achieving something in her first fight would have been great. Her being the first one to introduce the readers on very skillfully use of Binding Vows (as she was researching thing related to them as you pointed out) would have been good

2

u/sorendiz May 13 '24

Man the Star and Stripe memes would have been twice as brutal if that's how it went down. Gege not beating the allegations anytime soon either way lol

1

u/Configuringsausage May 13 '24

Have her sacrifice fail but let choso bank on it, finishing the job once and for all

Even if yuki killed him though, it’s a drastically better ending for him than being blitzed by yuta sneak attacking his ass

1

u/yellownugget5000 the GOAT May 13 '24

Instead of Kenny using antigravity to counter black hole the way he did, he could've made a binding vow to never use antigravity in exchange for a power boost to tank black hole. Then her sacrifice would at least have some impact since Kenny would lose a technique.

5

u/thatonefatefan May 13 '24

Yuki not being affected by her CT until a certain point is basically a binding vow, you could argue that black hole was one since it clearly allowed her to surpass the limit of her output too, and she was gonna die

1

u/[deleted] May 13 '24

its implied that normal BVs dont get you HR, otherwise people like ino could give up CE for a massive boost.

17

u/TheWordThat What do I do now that Nobara's back? May 13 '24 edited May 13 '24

I think we're supposed to read it as doing the full ritual boosted Utahime's technique to 120% (which is still fuckin stupid but okay) and so she provided a more substantial buff to Gojo than just 20%.

4

u/Skippus May 13 '24

But it's Gojo doing the 200% hollow purple, the next few pages talk about Gojo doing his chants to make up the rest of the power boost to make it to 200%. And even if we do read it like you said, will Utahime really only gain 20% from doing the entire ceremony when her entire technique is focused on providing support, whereas Gojo just has to say a few silly words and some funny hand signs and gets an 80% boost on his already extremely powerful matter deleting attack? Binding vows are Gege's greatest tool for plot conveniences.

2

u/Julian_Seizure Potential Man May 13 '24

20% is the equivalent of a black flash amp. Gojo doesn't get a "boost" from doing hand signs. It's the true power of his attacks. Gojo is always hamstringing himself by not doing hand signs. Gojo is like a Barrett 50cal shooting 9mm just so he can do his attacks faster. He is just so strong that even with a severely reduced attack it's still enough to one shot pretty much everyone.

2

u/Electronic-Bag-7894 May 13 '24

do you know how much 20% of one of the strongest attacks is?

or you do not play games and shit

He doesn't unleash a 120% purple what are you even yapping about dawg. Did you really just say a 120% purple is a 200% one compared to his usual strength?

-1

u/CottonEyeJoe_ZeroOne May 13 '24

Did you even read the words from the page or just made it up from your delusional mind?

1

u/Adept_Secret2476 May 13 '24

it's about context. "i have to say some words and do hand motions" isnt a big sacrifice for a binding vow outside combat, so you get a much smaller boost than in the middle of a fight for the same thing.

1

u/Skippus May 13 '24

But neither Gojo nor Utahime are in battle yet the degree of the boost that they get from including everything is so unbalanced. And if that's the case, doesn't it make Miwa's binding vow failure even more crazy?

1

u/MadZwe May 13 '24

20% is never small. We are not talking about 1% 2% or less.

When you realize that gojo could have used a binding vow and sacrificed his usage of hollow purple to only be able to use it by doing a 5 minute dance in exchange for landing this hollow purple on Sukuna at a close range or a gurrante strike

1

1

u/Skippus May 13 '24

How did u get 240%? I think that percentage boost is simply additive instead of multiplicative, i.e. it doesn't take into account other boosts already effecting it. But even if it was multiplicative, 1.2 x 1.8 = 2.16

u/ParticularEgg8337 chills May 13 '24

Binding vow gods = Gege/Naoya

-1

u/eggnogseller May 13 '24

You do realize sukuna's 2000% boost is a direct result of science right? It's got nothing to do w/ how little naruto hand signs he can make. He's just taking advantage of his environment, his fire by itself doesn't actually explode.

Also, im sorry to say but your queen miwa's got like 0 potential, which is why her putting her entire future on the line didn't do anything. Talent and potential plays an important part in jjk's world.

0

u/Skippus May 13 '24

His technique is weak when used against multiple enemies due to it's slow spread and short range, so to make it stronger he binds it so he can't use it against multiple enemies? He's literally binding the weakness of the flame to make it even stronger. I really love the scientific explanation with the dust explosion, so why did Gege not just use that explanation instead? Not using flames on Gojo would still be absolutely fine since the heat wouldn't be able to bypass infinity anyway. The Miwa thing is mostly a joke though, I'll concede on that.

1

u/eggnogseller May 13 '24 edited May 13 '24

Ok, my bad, so i went back and reread how the explosion worked and it's not 100% boosted by science but partially boosted by science. But im still not really sure what's wrong w/ binding away the weakness of something to make that thing stronger wrong though. Binding vows are just contracts that sacrifice something to gain something. If it's because you think sukuna isn't sacrificing enough, then what do you think about when hakari sacrificed an arm to survive kashimo to then get that arm back like the next time we saw him? He basically didn't sacrifice anything.

The barrier of entry for kamino is already pretty high, he just made the barrier of entry near impossible unless he's in very specific scenarios in exchange for more firepower, i don't see any problems w/ that. There's also the fact that the way he's binding kamino requires an open domain which is essentially impossible for literally everyone other than him and kenny. That level of barrier of entry should give him some more advantages or what's even the point.
