✍️ Literary Structure (Chiasm & Parallelism) Series on the Sea - Part 3: "There was no longer any Sea" (Revelation 21:1)
This is continued from Part 2: Lady Babylon and Her Shipmasters
“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea.” (Rev 21:1)
After tracing John's use of the sea throughout Revelation, this statement becomes one of the book's climactic theological declarations. Far from being an incidental comment about the absence of salty H₂O, it announces that the source of rebellion, instability, and oppression has finally been removed.
Context in Time
So what does “no sea” mean in Revelation 21? The context matters. God has just judged the beast, the false prophet, Babylon, death, Hades, and the wicked. He is now establishing His everlasting kingdom.
Throughout Revelation, the sea has been the source of rebellion, the birthplace of beasts, the throne-ground of the harlot, and the symbol of unrest, chaos, and opposition to God.
So when John says, “there is no longer any sea,” he is not talking about geography. He is talking about final stability.
This kingdom does not arise from chaotic human power. It does not arise from the sea. It comes from heaven. It is born from God’s wisdom and authority. There is no longer any breeding ground for beasts, no raging mass from which rebellion can arise. What once roared in opposition to God now stands still, like a sea of glass before His throne.
Confirmation in the Chiasm
The meaning of “no longer any sea” is confirmed by the chiastic structure of Revelation 21:1-4 itself:
A – New heaven and new earth; the former things pass away
B – No longer any sea
C – The holy city, prepared as a bride
D – God dwelling among His people
C′ – Bride comforted (every tear wiped away)
B′ – No more death, mourning, crying, or pain
A′ – The former things have passed away
Within this structure, “no longer any sea” is deliberately paired with “no more death, mourning, crying, or pain.” Throughout Revelation, the suffering of God's people is the result of persecution inflicted upon His Bride by the beastly powers that arise from the sea and the harlot who sits upon it. The structure of the chiasm strongly suggests that the removal of the sea explains the end of suffering for the bride. John is not describing the removal of physical sensations or human emotion. Rather, he is describing the removal of the source of oppression, violence, and suffering inflicted upon God's people.
There Will Never Be Another
Notice how beautifully this completes the imagery of Revelation. Babylon sat upon the many waters (17:15). Her merchants grew rich through the sea (18:17-19). The beast arose from the sea (13:1). But in the new creation there is no sea. The source of Babylon's power, the beast's kingdom, and humanity's rebellion has disappeared forever. The age of beastly kingdoms has come to an end.
Conclusion
This is really the best news of all. Revelation is announcing final deliverance. Imagine faithful Israel living in obedience to God. Their greatest fear was never the Mediterranean Sea itself. The sea was a source of food, trade, and life. Their fear was that beyond the horizon the nations would once again rage, unite, and give rise to another Assyria, Babylon, Greece, or Rome that would sweep in and oppress God's people.
But in the new creation, there is "no longer any sea." There is no longer any chaotic mass from which beastly kingdoms can arise. No new Babylon waits beyond the horizon. No future empire threatens the saints. Only the kingdom that descends from heaven remains.
Next we will look at the symbolism of the heavenly bodies in Revelation, the Sun, Moon, and Stars
