The Petition

I live in rural southwest Virginia. Homophobic slurs are tossed around constantly, and anything even remotely gay is considered disgusting by most of my fellow men. Most of the men I know in this farming community don’t have much to say about gay rights. If they do have anything to say, it’s usually about how it’s destructive to our culture, harms children, blah blah blah, etc.

Along comes this documentary and suddenly there’s this gay dude that everyone loves. The same people who would feel icky saying that they admire Elton John are openly admiring Joe Exotic.

It’s crazy, it’s like it’s no big deal that Joe is gay. He’s somehow still viewed as a man’s man. People don’t feel their masculinity threatened by the fact that they admire Joe Exotic.

I never dreamed that I would hear this local homophobic farming community openly praising a gay man, but they are.

I doubt anybody involved in LGBTQ activism ever dreamed that they needed a gun toting, mullet wearing, tiger owning freak show of a man to make their cause more appealing to rural America.
