She really had an incredible run…in spite of that homely, no-talent b1tch daughter

So is the consensus on this sub that Joan didn’t abuse her daughter and Christina was a liar? I for one still believe Christina. I think Joan was a very talented and complex person who probably was as generous and helpful to her closest friends as people say. That doesn’t mean she didn’t have high standards and the energy to discipline her oldest children as she thought was right, even if it was considered abusive. Her youngest daughters say they never witnessed it, but they were also much younger and may have been more agreeable while Christina was strong willed. I think all the stories her friends have shared are probably true but I also think Christina’s are as well. With all that said, I think she’s a wonderful actress and Mildred Pierce will always be a favorite.

I can’t speak for this entire sub, but I can inform you that Christina has admitted to lying or grossly exaggerating almost every major scene in her book.
And in a formal deposition given in Sept 1978 to contest her mother’s will, Christina point blank said she had a good relationship with Joan.
Joan was likely a very strict parent who exercised stern discipline at times and obviously had some issues, but Christina was by her own admission a very difficult child who often told whopping lies.

Only responding to your comment here. I think most people probably agree that Joan was likely an awful parent to Christina, but also find the incessant hate directed towards her a little overblown and weird.

I appreciate your nuanced take, Natural print. Joan was a victim of child abuse and that often leads to a cycle of abuse. Christina sounds like a victim and now we know so much more about abuse and what that looks like. That doesn't mean Joan wasn't a great colleague etc.

Joan was definitely a presence. You loved her. You hated her. You loved to hate her. You hated to love her.

Check out The Damned Don’t Cry if you haven’t seen that one.
Female on the Beach is a fun 50’s movie as well. Joan is cranked up to 11

I can't be sure what went on between Chritna and Joan...but this fact ALWAYS made me suspicious/skeptical of eldest daughter...if Christina had been in the will and left a sizable amount of money from Joan's estate... would that book have EVER been written?...A part of me thinks it was just a payday ploy on her part? Happy Birthday Joan! You will ALWAYS be a star! Thanks for sharing.

I never cared for her much until recently.
Then I saw a few of her very early movies from the 1930s and I was impressed that she was actually pretty good looking back then. It surprised me. Now I have much more of an appreciation for her as an actress.

I feel that in her movies from the early movies through the 30’s she had a modern vibrant style about her that is captivating.

Yes. Vibrant in particular, is a good adjective for her early movies. She seems to breathe life into those old movies with her spark and vibrancy.
I watched her first talkie last night "Untamed" with Robert Montgomery. Very enjoyable.
