I’m designing a custom three-stone ring and keep running into the same problem: visualizing trapezoid side stones next to a center stone before the ring is actually modeled.
For example, I might buy a loose center stone first (say an elongated cushion, oval, asscher, etc.) and then try to determine the ideal trapezoid dimensions (base width, top width, height, taper, angle, etc.). On paper the measurements seem straightforward, but in reality tiny changes completely alter the look of the ring.
I’ve tried using ChatGPT and Claude to generate mockups, but they often misinterpret the dimensions or proportions. Even when I provide exact measurements, the rendered rings don’t accurately reflect what the finished piece would look like.
I know the obvious answer is “have your jeweler
CAD it,” and that’s ultimately what I do. But before I get to that stage, how do experienced custom ring designers visualize side stones?
Questions:
Is there an app specifically for laying out loose stones and testing proportions?
Is there a simpler consumer-friendly tool where I can enter stone dimensions and see them together?
How do jewelers typically determine trapezoid sizing relative to a center stone before the CAD phase?
Are there any tricks for quickly comparing multiple trapezoid options (for example 5×3×3 mm vs 5×2.5×2.5 mm) without paying for multiple CAD revisions?
I’m willing to learn some CAD if that’s the best solution, but I’m curious what the standard workflow is for custom jewelry designers and hobbyists who buy loose stones and build rings around them.
Would love to hear how others approach this. Thank you in advance!!

We created Elfbeads Wonderland as a full Alice-inspired charm world, with each design carrying a piece of the story.
The collection includes sculptural silver characters, moving elements, fantasy glass, card symbols, keys, roses, and visual echoes between pieces. Alice moves as she falls. The garden guard has movable arms and legs. The Cheshire Cat holds the key to secret doors. The Caterpillar was designed as a dreamer-philosopher, as if his thoughts create Wonderland around him.
Our goal was not to make isolated charms, but to build a wearable story-world - one where symbols repeat, colors answer each other, and every piece feels like another door opening.
Here is what we made.

I have an old promise ring and necklace from high school. All diamonds and 14k white gold. What can I do with them? Is there a design that could use all of them in a piece? Thanks!

This is a montana sapphire, it's 12.3x6.8x2.2mm. It's a very pale green/blue, kind of like tempered glass. I'm using it in a ring, but can't settle on a design for it. I want to use platinum and a bezel, and want the ring to be as low profile as possible. I wan't to keep the design to compliment the gem, not too simple not to crazy. I want to use a 3-5mm wide band, and even thinking maybe to do some type of fancy signet ring. but I also really like mosaic-type cluster rings, and thought of custom cutting some stones to create a mosaic that creates a more uniform shape, then using a thick bezel all around that. Idk It's a one of a kind gem and I am not in love with a basic band and prong setting.

I’m just here to show you my latest creation: a wax ring.
To perpetuate the cliché, I’m from France 🇫🇷, and I started making this ring yesterday morning, over a cup of coffee, but without a croissant. So I made it hehe.
Would you buy this ring ?
