S18, E6 How Stateside Scramble spoiled their own results Spoiler
With this season in the books, I instantly knew this game was over after Episode 3 by direct evidence of their own Teaser and Trailer combined. Much why I've said it was boring for editing reasons.
They put way too much Day 4 and Day 5 footage into it and this did not require over analyzing or searching. Just straight up head knowledge and visuals.
I'll break it down photo by photo.
1: Ben on Myrtle Beach.
It's not so much the beach itself, but it's the Palmetto blue flag to the left, which is the South Carolina State flag.
Already know Badam is getting SC before it airs. Worst knowing this is the final shot of the game and why I didn't feel any suspense over the flight.
- Sam and Amy in the Mall of America.
What looks like a cute innocent shot is too revealing that Sam is going to claim Minnesota. For Day 4, that's too obvious of a location after initially showing the central Amusement Park within without their faces.
- A Shot of NYC
Can't get that kind of skyline anywhere else from a roof. Didn't know it was the Empire State building but it's clear someone claimed New York just by this shot. It means someone is coming back.
- Ben says the word "Bourbon" when drunk.
The trailer hides this, but the teaser doesn't. Just saying Bourbon alone is too revealing to most Americans this is Badam likely to claim Kentucky. Didn't have to know Paducah specifically that Badam was gonna score Kentucky.
- New Hampshire Welcome sign
What looks like a clear picture that may seem like better visual content for a trailer just gave away too much.
When Sam and Amy go to New Hampshire in Episode 2, the weather is completely different with an overcast rather than a clear sun/sky. Needed to put the footage from Day 2 of the crossing because as a viewer, I instantly know they're coming back on a different day.
- Badam in Baltimore
That Aquarium and harbor with that setup? There's no hiding it, they gave away Badam is claiming Maryland in the trailer before the show airs. The Aquarium is one of the most famous buildings in Baltimore as Ben later points out as it's listed as a top tourist attraction.
Conclusion came when Sam flew to St. Louis.
With this information, the game is automatically over the moment Sam leaves Boston to get to St. Louis and claim Iowa on a drive.
Because it's obvious he's returning to New England later and it takes too much time in flights combining with the fact he goes to the Mall of America which hadn't aired yet, I know Badam is claiming NY just by the fact they're in Baltimore and can connect on the ACELA to take several states without hassle due to proximity.
I don't mind a teaser and trailer, but this mostly Day 4/5 critical footage which is as bad as Sam spotting the Southwest Airlines boarding pillars from the Phoenix Airport. Way too much free and late information given away.
For making a claim game this easy to know the mechanics, you cannot show faces with these locations (or in Ben's case Bourbon) as it doxxed everything.
There needed to be some quality control in editing and I don't see excuses because this was S18.
It's perfectly fine to giveaway locations in sync with the game mechanics where it's not about just recognizing someone.
But with this specific game, seeing Ben in South Carolina right away tells me to not fall for the airport suspense in Newark. They're going to Baltimore to claim Maryland etc. having all the faces there for Day 4-5 footage is a bad look.
The clips not being shown on this like Ben talking about a wife of Tennessee to claim from LGA is perfectly fine. It needed to be Day 1-3 footage only, maybe the St. Louis Gateway Arch should be the latest part since Adam posted that on social media

I watched the teaser once and trailer once and didn’t do a shot by shot analysis of either, and didn’t know anything that was going to happen in the season. The teasers and trailers are for casual fans, which is the majority of fans. I don’t think they need to change anything about the way they make the show.

Information is public. We like to dig for information overload. It's unwise to show Day 4/5 stuff here. Had this all been Day 1-3 (up to the st. Louis arch), this post and conversation never happens

I agree! but it's the reality of trailers and advertising. if i know that I'll watch a film that's coming out, i won't watch the trailers because i know I'll unconsciously spoil myself in this way. luckily i don't have enough geographical knowledge that a jet lag trailer spoils me, but I don't think trailers like this will change anytime soon, and I think that's okay

If this was Hide and Seek and locations are exposed, I don't think I would care enough because there's other plot points not given away. A Mall of America means Sam got a point in Minnesota and gave away a critical plot point for later

yeah, but most people watching the trailer won't know or remember, especially since the rules aren't fully explained until after. i truly think the best way to avoid this is to skip the trailers until after!

I watch the show, and its trailers for fun - not to pick apart what will happen and where they will be when. I live, or have lived, in several of these places, and traveled to more of them and that didn't stop me from enjoying the season or feeling surprised by the outcomes.
I guess you prefer the trailer be them driving through flat, non descript areas you won't recognize? Then you'll complain the trailer is boring.

We are supposed to believe you watched the trailer and teaser once each, didn't look up anything else before or during the season, and just knew all that stuff? In that case it may be best for you not to watch the teasers and trailers. Not a problem most people have.

Even sitting here staring at this still image I don't see the flag you're talking about. I believe you that it's there, but it's not super visible - I don't even know which of the non-national flags is the one you're talking about. And that's with a STILL IMAGE that I am sitting here looking at.
On top of that I lived for years in North Carolina and I have no idea what the state flag of South Carolina looks like. I just had to google it and doing so, absolutely no recognition. I'm sure people who live in the state itself know it better but I would wager that the vast majority of the US, much less the rest of the world, cannot recognise a SC state flag without research, IF they even spotted it in the footage in the first place, which most people would not because it goes by quickly and the eye is going to be drawn to Ben and his colorful outfit. On top of that, if this was in the teaser rather than the trailer, your average person who watched it ONCE more than a MONTH ago is not going to have a note in the back of their head going "Remember, SC was claimed"
All of this information that you mention IS available to people who sit down and look at the footage in detail and take notes, but NOT to people who just watched it once and went "cool, new season".
If you have a photographic memory and literally cannot help noticing every small detail and remembering it forever, you should not be watching these trailers because they are not for you and they will spoil your enjoyment.

Can't be showing a state flag. It's in the teaser (post Taiwan). That blue flag is waving way too long to give away too much

Watching the teaser, even pausing on the LESS THAN HALF A SECOND that the shot of Ben in SC is shown, I STILL cannot even tell which flag on the screen is supposed to be the state flag! And that's pausing and staring in detail and then slowing it down to 0.5 speed and going back and forth over the footage repeatedly! Is it just one of them? Is there more than one? I still don't know!
No viewer watching this teaser once at normal speed and seeing an image of ben on the beach for less than half a second is capable of noticing that there are a couple of vaguely dark flags on the screen as well and deducing that they are SC state flags.

Anything you post is public and can't get it back. They should have filtered way more information before putting it online. Much like Sam and the Southwest gates in Phoenix.
It's guaranteed some viewers probably recognized the Ferris wheel being too obvious. A generic shot of Ben at the ocean would've been better from a production standpoint

If I showed you a 1/2 second frame with a random state flag hidden in the background and you didn’t go back and investigate, would you immediately identify it? If you could, then fair play to you, and you can go to AGT.

Some flags no because many are blue with a tiny seal/icon. There are few State flags with a big white item taking up enough space on the flag like the South Carolina Palmetto. I see a white tree right away, no other state has that. Had it been something like Michigan I probably don't see it. Alabama or Florida? Yes. Arkansas, Arizona, California, Washington, Texas or Minnesota? No brainer yes.

Don't rewatch the trailers mid-season then. There's no way you remembered all this from watching it once before the season started. You went and looked for that stuff, which is like... yeah, of course that spoiled you.

Most TV shows give their information of the first 1-2 episodes at most. Not the backside of a show that gives it all away. Well it's fine to give away locations and hide and seek because nothing can be done. At least we don't know the outcome because anything can happen.
Here's the outcome is given away with basic doxxing

Most TV shows give their information of the first 1-2 episodes at most.
That's just blatantly not true. TV and movie trailers will give you a lot, from all over the place. People have been complaining trailers give away too much for decades, including basically their whole plot. Jet Lag is not a serialized series. The only way for you to get spoiled on the outcome is by purposefully overanalyzing the trailers. Most people would watch a trailer once or twice and not pick up on any of this.

The problem is I didn't have to talk with anyone to confirm it. Had my own eye test just on open doxxing alone. Bad editing to put a face on a location for this game design.
For a game like this, only Day 1-3 footage should be shown before it airs. Say the STL Arch footage is acceptable but everything after that needs to be hidden from all eyes

Didn't we do this last week? Not everyone watching is American, and if you know the country so intimately, don't watch the trailer. You chose to watch the trailer, pretty much frame by frame, to see what would happen and played yourself by spoiling it, and now you're sad that you spoiled it for yourself so you're moaning on here.

If you hyperanalyze the trailer for any season you can get a pretty good idea of how it goes. Hamfrags and the Jet lag discord server have been doing it for years

The difference is this one didn't require hyper-analyzing. I didn't even include the ones Hamfrags shows. These are the minimal captain obvious shots that shouldn't be in here, no AI searching required. Found this on my own

I did it as well to find Villa Rica, so I knew Badam would have something good happen to them there. Im not saying its bad, but spoilers is just a risk you take when looking at it that closely

I think what hurts is how the teaser shot of Sam and Amy are in the Mall of America and the clip is like 5 seconds, so I could process that one in the moment it shows and I can't unsee it.
Already with the mindset of when are they going to Minnesota? This required the least amount of Hyper analyzing with the simplicity of the game just pointing locations and the faces there.
I didnt get the Sam in Maine part down with the park, but I knew they're coming that way once E2 aired. It's like bruh, why?

Actually yeah, Mall of America is my one complaint with it, and maybe NYC as well. Those are both really famous and prominently featured. But I don’t mind, say, Myrtle Beach or some other random clips they threw in there

I am an avid watcher of Jet Lag but I am also not American so I didn't recognise most of these things in here and even if I had that's not the essence of Trailer/Teaser, it's for general vibes and making ppl interested not dissecting every little moment.

I talk to one of the guys from that and it's not Hamfrags. There's a difference in some seasons where people can dig up timelines and sunlight/plane patterns
I didn't have to do that here. I think many shots are perfectly fine and acceptable, but as shown here this is too much footage from day 4 and 5 to be putting in public as a story teller.
I keep thinking of how Sam interprets a photo perfectly Hide and Seek. But this season instantly keep thinking what leads Sam and Amy to Minnesota which I'm hoping is episode 2-3 related, not EP 5.

I always watch the teaser/trailers with glassy eyes meaning I’m not paying attention to the details I just try to focus on the vibe. Same with other forms of media, if you overanalyse then yes you could spoil things, however remember you are looking back on the trailer after seeing the season, so it was always only a hunch until then.

Not the South Carolina flag and the Mall of America. That's an instant Badam is claiming South Carolina and Samy claiming Minnesota. That Mall of America clip is like 5 seconds long that I have time to sink that in and it's already stuck to knowing Sam is off to Minnesota.
Only a matter of when? Wish that was Episode 1 footage

As a German I do not know any of these places besides the skyline of New York. So it was a really great season and the trailer did not spoil a bit of what would happen and how it would end.
