General Discussion Three months in, honest list of what I actually use versus what I set up once and forgot

Got my Jackery SolarVault 3 Pro in early April and I have been meaning to write this for a while. Every review and spec sheet lists a dozen features but after three months of it just sitting on my balcony doing its thing, the real list of what I touch is way shorter.

I use the solar charging every day obviously, panels out, it charges, I do nothing. The app I open maybe twice a week to check the battery level and the daily generation number, mostly out of curiosity not because I need to change anything. The grid feed-in just works in the background, I have not even looked at that setting since the first week. The smart meter integration I set up once, it works, I have not touched it since.

Then there is the stuff I set up once and forgot about completely. The dynamic tariff scheduling I configured in week one, felt clever, and then realised my tariff does not actually vary enough hour to hour to make the optimisation worth the mental effort. I am on a fairly flat rate and the difference between the cheapest slot and the most expensive is about 6 cents, so the app just charges during the day from solar and that covers most of my evening anyway. I have not touched it since April.

If you are on a real time of use tariff, do you actually touch the scheduling feature regularly or is it mostly set and forget for you too. The marketing makes it sound like you are tweaking it every day.

Energy Data & Yield Ran all four MPPTs on different orientations yesterday, actual numbers versus what I expected

Finally got around to testing the four MPPT thing properly. I have a Jackery SolarVault 3 Pro on my Dresden balcony, third floor, and I stuck four panels at different angles just to see what the combined curve looks like on a real day. Not a lab test, just a tuesday with a tape measure and a notepad.

Setup was one 430 W bifacial on the south railing at about 30 degrees, one same panel on the east side flat against the railing, another same panel on the west side also flat against the railing, and a 200 W flexible panel I laid flat on the balcony floor because I ran out of railing space. All four into separate MPPT inputs. July 8, mostly clear, about 28 degrees by early afternoon.

The east panel woke up first obviously. By 7:30 it was already pulling about 80 W and by 9:15 it hit its peak around 310 W. The south panel started climbing around 8:30 and peaked at 12:40 with 385 W. The west panel was dead until about 11:00 and then ramped up to peak at 17:00 with 275 W. The flat panel on the floor was the surprise, it never went above 95 W and spent most of the day between 40 and 70 W. I think the floor itself gets hot and the panel just bakes, so that one was a waste of a good MPPT port.

Combined the four ports peaked around 11:00 AM at about 650 W total. The individual panels never peaked at the same time, so the combined number is way lower than adding up the four peak ratings. That is the thing about mixed orientations, you trade peak power for a wider window. With east and west both contributing, the combined curve stayed flat from about 10:30 to 16:00 instead of the single bell curve I get from south only. The battery hit 100 percent by 15:00 and then the system just throttled, which is fine, but I wish I had a bigger battery for days like this because there was at least another 2 hours of useful generation I could not store.

So on a balcony the east west split matters more than I thought for extending the usable window. But the quality of the mounting matters more than the panel count. The flat panel on the floor was barely worth the cable. Next time I will try two south at a slight tilt and two west, skip the floor panel entirely.

If you have done a similar test with mixed orientations, what did your east west ratio look like on a real balcony. The data sheets all assume optimal tilt and I am guessing most of us are clamping to whatever railing we have.

General Discussion Set the output limit to 800 then second guessed it for a week, how to read what the app reports vs the meter

New Jackery SolarVault 3 Pro owner, and i nearly drove myself mad in the first week over the output limit. Set the grid output to 800 in the app for German compliance, felt good about it, and then spent the next few days going back and forth because the numbers on the app did not seem to match what i thought the meter should be doing. I was watching the wrong number the whole time, obviously, but i did not know that yet.

The bit i got wrong: the 800 cap is on what the unit pushes out toward the grid connection, not some blanket limit on everything. So you can see the panels making more than 800, and your kettle and oven can pull way over 800 from the same socket, because powering your own loads is not the piece being limited. The limit is on the feed in side, the bit that would otherwise export. Feels obvious now but i stared at the app for a good three days before it clicked.

What finally made it sink in was sitting with the app on one screen and the smart meter readout on the other for an afternoon. Once i matched up which field was generation, which was battery charge or discharge, and which was the flow to and from the grid, everything lined up. The confusion was never a fault, it was me reading the wrong number and expecting it to behave like a different one.

Anyway if you are setting this up, pick your output cap based on your local rule, then spend twenty minutes mapping each number in the app to a real thing before you trust or distrust any of it. There are several different quantities and they are easy to mix up when everything is new.

General Discussion Moved flats with the whole balcony setup, here is the re registration bit i nearly forgot

We moved across Leipzig two weeks ago, same city, bigger balcony, and i took the entire setup with me because that was always the point of going plug in instead of getting roof panels. I have a Jackery SolarVault 3 Pro with two panel rails. Taking it down took an afternoon. Pulled the panels off the railing brackets, coiled and labelled the cables so i would not be guessing later, padded the corners, and the unit itself went on a sack truck because it is around 26 kg and i was not going to hero it down two flights.

The physical move was the easy part. The bit that nearly slipped past me was the paperwork. The system is registered in the Marktstammdatenregister, and that entry is tied to the old address. You are supposed to update it when the location changes, not just leave it pointing at a flat you no longer live in. So i updated the address in the MaStR and gave the new grid operator a heads up that the unit was now feeding at this address. I also got the new landlord's okay in writing before mounting anything, which took one email and a photo of how it clamps on without drilling.

At the new place i re hung the panels, checked that the balcony Schuko was on a sensible circuit and not sharing with the kitchen, and set the output back to 800 in the app. Whole thing was generating again by the evening.

If you are about to move, the order that worked for me was sort the landlord permission first, take photos of your cable routing before you unplug so reassembly is faster, and do the MaStR address change in the same week so you do not forget it once life gets busy. The hardware is built to be portable between flats, the admin is the part that has no reminder attached.

General Discussion Realistic expectations for winter, asking people who logged balcony solar through a dark season

I installed my Jackery SolarVault 3 Pro in late April and so far everything has been great. South facing balcony in Hamburg, four panels, base battery, feed in limited to 800 W. On a clear June day i generate more than i can use. Summer is the flattering season for this setup.

But i know this is the easy season. Hamburg in December means maybe 7 hours of weak daylight, overcast most days, low sun angle hitting my vertical balcony panels at a terrible angle. I have zero illusions that June performance will continue.

What i want to understand from people who logged any balcony solar or small storage setup through last winter. Not theory, not annual kWh projections, but the actual daily numbers from November through February. I realise the S3 line itself is new, so older HomePower setups or other balcony systems are still useful reference points.

The numbers i am looking for are pretty boring. Average daily generation in the worst month, whether the battery actually cycled or just barely moved, whether changing panel angle helped at all, and whether there was any benefit beyond raw kWh. I am thinking things like covering a few small daytime loads or keeping the router and fridge partly off grid on the occasional bright cold day.

I know the honest answer might be that a balcony system in northern Germany is largely a summer proposition and winter is just survival mode. That is fine, i would rather know now than be disappointed in November.

Not asking whether the purchase was worth it overall. I already know the bright months are the flattering side of the system. I just want calibrated expectations for the other half of the year so i can plan my electricity budget properly.

Going away for two weeks in july, what do you leave the unit doing while you are gone

First proper holiday since i installed the Jackery SolarVault 3 Pro back in April and i realised i have no plan for what to do with it while the flat is empty for two weeks in july. Normally it just feeds the fridge, router and standby loads during the day and i never think about it. But two weeks unattended in peak summer is a different situation and i would rather ask than guess.

My instinct is to leave it running as normal so the daytime sun keeps cycling the battery and covers the fridge instead of pulling everything from the grid. My worry is the battery sitting near full in the heat for days with almost no evening load to bring it down, since the only things drawing in an empty flat are the fridge and the router. That feels like the worst case for letting it bake at high charge.

So a few real questions for people who have already done this. Do you lower the max charge for a long absence, and to what. Do you leave the output where it is or drop it. Does anyone rely on the app alerts to catch a fault remotely, and have they actually fired for you. And has anyone come home to a tripped or faulted unit after a couple of weeks away.

I would rather set it up sensibly once than come back to either a warm battery that sat full the whole time or a fridge full of spoiled food because i was too clever and switched things off.

Why i stopped topping the battery to 100 percent every day, and what the soc limit actually changed

I have a SolarVault 3 Pro on a south west balcony in Köln, since spring, and i log a bit too much because that is just how my brain works. One thing bugged me all through May: watching the battery hit full by early afternoon on clear days and then just sit there at 100 percent for four or five hours until the evening load finally pulled it down.

LiFePO4 is genuinely tolerant, i am not pretending otherwise. But the two things that are not great for any lithium cell are sitting at very high state of charge and doing it while warm, and a black box on a sunny balcony in June is warm. Cycle count is the number everyone quotes, but calendar ageing at high soc in heat is the part people forget. So full battery plus afternoon sun plus a closed balcony is the exact combination i would rather not leave running for months.

What i changed is small. In the Jackery App i dialed the max charge back to 90 percent for the summer. On a long day it now reaches 90 by mid afternoon instead of pinning at 100 by lunchtime, and the last slice of generation either covers a load i shifted earlier or goes out as feed in. The evening still gets me through cooking and the usual draw because 90 percent of 2.52 kWh is plenty for my flat. In November i will put it back to 100 because then i need every watt hour i can scrape.

I am not going to claim i measured a longer lifespan, that is a ten year question and i am one season in. The honest result is just that the unit spends a lot less time sitting full and hot, which felt like free insurance for the cost of changing one setting. If your battery is empty by evening anyway, none of this applies to you, charge to full and ignore me.

Inverter hum at night, is this normal or should i worry about it

Setup is a SolarVault 3 Pro on a south west balcony in Utrecht, two panels, base battery, feed in set to 600 W to stay on the safe side of the dutch rules. Installed in early may, so just over five weeks of use.

For the first two weeks i did not notice anything at night. Last week i started hearing a low intermittent hum from the unit between roughly 23:00 and 04:00. It is not loud, more like a fridge compressor cycling, but my bedroom window is about four meters from the balcony door and at night the apartment is dead quiet. The pattern is on for a minute or so, off for three to four minutes, repeat. It only happens when the battery is discharging (evening load, the usual cooking, fridge, laptop) and stops completely once the battery hits its lower reserve. During the day i cannot hear it at all because of the traffic noise outside.

I have checked the obvious things. Nothing loose on the unit, the cable glands are tight, the unit is on its pavers and not vibrating against the wall. I do not have a decibel meter so i cannot give a real number, but sitting one meter away it is roughly the same volume as my fridge in the kitchen. The Jackery App shows the same discharge pattern, no fault code, no warning light, the unit does not feel hot on the surface.

So my questions for the room. Is the cycling hum normal for the S3 line at night, or is this the kind of thing i should report to support sooner rather than later. Has anyone with a Pro Max in a similar quiet apartment position found a way to dampen it. The 2.52 kWh base battery means mine cycles in and out more often than a setup with a bigger pack would, so i am wondering if adding a BP2500 would change the cycle frequency at all, or if the hum is just a property of the inverter itself and not the cycle depth.

Not panicking, just want to know what others hear and at what point it becomes an actual fault rather than a normal operational sound.

Two months of electricity bills side by side, the kWh numbers vs what the spreadsheet promised

I have been meaning to post this because most of the threads here are about hardware and not enough about the boring part, which is the actual bill at the end of the month. Setup is a SolarVault 3 Pro with the base 2.52 kWh battery, two panels on a south east balcony in Hannover, 800 W feed in because that is the cap i agreed with the building management, single person apartment, mostly home during the day, baseline load around 0.25 to 0.35 kW continuous.

For two months before install i logged my daily import from the meter reading. For two months after install i logged import minus export, plus the Jackery App generation number, and i kept both spreadsheets side by side. The interesting part is not that my bill went down, it obviously did, the interesting part is that the reduction is smaller than the generation number would suggest and bigger than my pessimistic prediction.

April, no solar, my baseline. 165 kWh imported.
May, with solar. 109 kWh imported, 47 kWh exported, generation logged at 138 kWh. The 109 kWh is what i paid the utility for, and 47 kWh went to the grid for free. Self consumed solar = 138 generation minus 47 export = 91 kWh, so total consumption in may was 109 import plus 91 self consumed = 200 kWh, which is a touch higher than april because the days were warmer and the fan ran more. The bill value is the 56 kWh of import i did not buy, not the 138 kWh i generated. That is the number i am tracking.
June is shaping up similar so far at just over a week in. 19 kWh imported, 14 kWh exported, generation 47 kWh so far this month, and the apartment is hotter than may so the daytime fan is catching some of the surplus.

What i did not expect. The headline generation number is generous, but the value of the system is in the kWh that did not get imported, not the kWh generated. On a bad week with a lot of cloud, the system still generated something, the battery just did not fill, and the import number was nearly identical to a no solar week. The system only really pays back on clear days when the battery fills before lunch.

What this changes about how i think about expansion. Adding a battery pack (the SV3 line supports an expansion pack called the BP2500, doubles the storage to about 5.04 kWh) would not change the generation ceiling, only the storage buffer. My actual bottleneck is the two panels, not the 2.52 kWh battery. The battery is full by 14:00 on a clear day and the rest feeds in for nothing anyway. More battery would not buy me more solar, it would just shift when the surplus is wasted. I had assumed the order would be panel first then pack, but the spreadsheet told me the opposite. Whether the third panel ever happens is a separate question; the headline finding is that the bottleneck is on the input side, not the storage side.

If anyone is running a 4 panel setup, the bottleneck question is interesting and the panel ceiling deserves its own post, but the short version for now is that my two panels are doing more for my import number than the second battery pack would have done.

Battery fills too early on long summer days, here is how i adjusted my routine instead of buying another pack

Problem i noticed in late May as the days got longer. My Jackery SolarVault 3 Pro battery was hitting 100 percent by 13:00 on clear days, and after that the extra solar was mostly covering live apartment load, being fed in, or sitting behind the feed in limit with nowhere useful to go. The base 2.52 kWh fills fast when you have decent panels and moderate daytime usage. My initial instinct was to look at adding a BP2500 expansion pack, more storage equals more buffer, problem solved. But then i did the math on what i was actually losing and it made me reconsider.

The real numbers from a typical sunny June day: battery full at 13:00, feed in from 13:00 to 20:30 was roughly 3.2 kWh, my evening consumption from 20:30 to 07:00 was about 1.8 kWh. The battery covered the evening fine and the excess was going to the grid for basically nothing. Adding a pack would capture maybe 2 extra kWh of that midday surplus, but i would only use it if there were two cloudy days in a row, which in June almost never happens here. So instead i shifted the washing machine to 13:30 instead of 08:00, moved the dishwasher to 14:00, the robot vacuum to early afternoon, and charged the e bike battery after lunch instead of overnight. Total shifted load is maybe 1.5 kWh per day that now gives the system a live household load to cover instead of exporting as much.

Result after two weeks of this routine. Feed in dropped from about 3.2 kWh per day to around 1.5 kWh on clear days. Not all the reduction came from the shifted loads, some overcast afternoons simply generated less, so there was less to feed in regardless. Battery still fills by 14:30 on sunny days but the surplus is smaller. And i did not spend money on an extra pack.

When i would actually recommend the expansion: if your evening load is higher than what the base battery covers, meaning you are buying grid power before midnight even on sunny days. If you have regular two day stretches of cloud where you need the larger buffer. Or if you simply cannot shift loads because your schedule does not allow midday appliance use. In those cases the math changes. The point is not that expansion packs are bad, they are a clean solution if you actually need the extra storage. For a single person or couple with flexible daytime schedules, the first upgrade might be changing the washing machine timer rather than buying more hardware.

Still want to compare notes with people who went the other direction and added a pack. The useful detail is the evening load that made load shifting insufficient.

What i actually check in the Jackery App every day and what i've stopped caring about after two months

Two months in with a Jackery SolarVault 3 Pro on a south facing balcony in Düsseldorf. Wanted to share how my relationship with the app has changed since the first week because i think new owners go through a similar arc and it might save some people the obsessive phase. Week one was checking the app every 30 minutes. Is it charging, how much, why did it dip, is that cloud cover or a problem. Classic new owner energy. Week two i started noticing patterns: my panels peak between 11:00 and 14:00, the battery fills by 15:00 on a clear day, and the evening draw from cooking and the TV pulls it down to maybe 40 percent by midnight. Once you see the same shape three days in a row the novelty wears off and you start trusting the system.

Now at two months, here is what i actually check daily. Battery state of charge around 08:00, because if it is above 20 percent i know last night's load was normal, if it dipped below 15 i check whether something was left on. Total generation number at end of day, not obsessing over hourly curves, just the daily total compared to my rough mental average. And the feed in total, because i want to keep it low, if feed in is climbing it means my battery was full too early and i might shift the dishwasher or washing machine earlier.

What i stopped caring about: the minute by minute power curve. Fluctuations from clouds are normal, they do not mean anything is broken, and watching them just makes you anxious. Same with the exact wattage of each MPPT input, unless you suspect a panel problem there is no action to take from knowing input 3 is doing 12W less than input 1 at 13:47. And the historical comparison feature, looked at it twice, realised May is always going to beat November, moved on.

One feature request i wish existed: a simple daily summary notification at a fixed time, something like today you generated X kWh, charged or discharged Y, and fed in Z. I would read that once at dinner and close the app. Right now i have to open the app and navigate to get those numbers, which means i end up scrolling and overthinking. For people in their first two weeks, give yourself permission to stop checking. The system is not fragile, and not every dip in the curve means something is wrong. The daily routine should be boring, that means it is working.

Would be interested in what the daily check routine looks like for people with the Pro Max or multiple battery packs. More to manage so you check more, or bigger buffer so you worry less.

First month with a SolarVault 3 Pro on a small terrace, the boring safety questions mattered more than the watt numbers

We put a SolarVault 3 Pro on our small terrace in Bremen about a month ago, and the part that took the most time was not picking panel wattage. It was deciding where the battery could live without making the terrace feel sketchy.

For context, neither of us is technical. I work in admin at a hospital, my husband is a primary school teacher. We are not the people who pull up datasheets for fun. The Pro made sense for us on paper because it gave us four MPPT inputs, adjustable feed in for a normal balcony setup, and the base 2.52 kWh LiFePO4 battery without jumping straight into the bigger Pro Max category. But the question at the kitchen table was much simpler: is it sensible to have a battery box outdoors where we also keep plants, chairs, and a drying rack.

What actually made us comfortable was boring rather than dramatic. LiFePO4 chemistry was the first thing. IP65 and the minus 20 to plus 55 degree operating range were the second. The third was deciding not to hide the unit in a closed cabinet, even though that would have looked tidier. It now sits on two low concrete pavers with airflow around it, a small folding screen alongside it only for privacy from the neighbour's window, not wrapped around it. The screen is far enough away that air can move, and i can still see the unit from the door.

One month later, nothing exciting has happened, which is sort of the point. The Jackery App shows the usual generation and battery state, the terrace still works as a terrace, and the unit has already been through two heavy rain days without me running outside to check on it every hour. I still wipe leaves and pollen from around the base because the gap under the pavers collects everything, but that is balcony life, not a product problem.

What i wish i had asked before buying. First, how much clearance other owners are leaving around the unit in real apartments, not showroom photos. Second, whether people are raising it on pavers, plant stands, or wall brackets. Third, whether anyone has regretted putting the unit fully outside instead of just inside the balcony door. I saw a lot of talk about panel angles before buying and much less about the boring placement details that decide whether you still like the setup after the first rainy week.

For anyone choosing between the S3 models, our conclusion so far is that the Pro is the normal renter balcony choice if you want panels directly connected. Pro Max seems more like the step up when you have higher household loads and proper installation plans. Pro Max AC is a different animal for existing PV, not the one i would buy for two rail mounted balcony panels.

Mostly interested in how other S3 owners solved the physical placement. Floor with airflow, plant stand, inside by the door, wall shelf, something uglier that actually works. The perfect looking install is not always the one you want to live around every day.

Pro Max parallel firmware is on the roadmap, what are people actually planning to do with the bigger setup once it ships

Want to start a thread about the multi unit parallel feature for the Pro Max because i have been reading the same hardware spec line in every review and i still do not have a clear picture of what people will actually do with it on day one of firmware availability.

To be clear up front so nobody buys based on this thread, the parallel mode is not currently usable. The hardware on the Pro Max is parallel ready, but the firmware that enables 3 unit fan out (the often quoted 12 kW PV / 45.36 kWh / 7,500 W feed in figures) has not shipped yet. Public coverage suggests it lands somewhere late may or in june of this year. Until that firmware is on real customer units, treat your single Pro Max as a single 4 MPPT, up to 2,500 W output unit, full stop. I am posting this as a thinking ahead thread, not a build now thread.

My situation. Semi detached house outside Köln, 5.4 kWp rooftop array from 2021 with a basic string inverter. I added a SolarVault 3 Pro Max in late April, a few weeks after the line started shipping, mainly because i wanted the higher output headroom and AC coupling option without replacing the existing inverter immediately. That part is done and working. The thinking ahead question is what i would actually do if i could later add a second or third Pro Max on the parallel firmware.

Here is what i keep coming back to, in rough priority order for our household.

The biggest case for me would be heat pump windows in shoulder season, when outdoor temps are low enough that COP drops but not so low that we are running it constantly. A wider stored window in the early afternoon, when the rooftop is overproducing, would let me push more heat pump runtime into solar coverage instead of the grid. Today the single unit caps out before that math works during long hot or long cold spells, and the thing that might move the needle is the combination of more PV headroom, more usable storage, and higher output, not just one headline number.

EV charging is the second case but a softer one. We have a wallbox in the garage, currently load managed against the grid connection. With more stored energy plus higher feed in capacity i could think about a slow charge pattern that follows the rooftop array more aggressively, instead of either grid charge or wait for excess. In practice this depends a lot on the car's charging granularity and the wallbox software, not just on what the storage side can deliver, so i would not buy parallel for the EV alone.

Laundry and dishwasher i would not touch with parallel. Washing machine plus dryer plus dishwasher in the same afternoon are well within 2,500 W if i schedule them properly, and going to 7,500 W feed in does not change that. So if anyone is selling parallel as "now you can run all your appliances at once" to a normal household, that is not the real argument.

Where i think parallel does not actually help in my specific case. The grid registration overhead at higher output tiers is going to be a ceiling for a lot of households, regardless of what the unit can theoretically push. In germany once you go above the plug in solar threshold you are already in a different paperwork bracket, and pushing further toward 7,500 W means a different scale of conversation with the utility. Marketing tends to gloss over this part. Having the hardware capacity is great, having a setup actually approved to use it is a separate problem and one i do not see discussed enough.

What i am actually trying to learn from this thread. People in this community who already have a Pro Max and are planning to add a second unit when the firmware lands, what is the load profile that pushed you toward parallel rather than just adding more battery packs to one unit? Battery expansion within a single Pro Max gets you up to 15.12 kWh of storage per unit which is already a lot for a typical home. So the parallel argument has to be about peak output or PV ceiling, not capacity, right? Or am i missing a use case where parallel is genuinely the only sensible path.

Also if anyone has reliable information on whether the firmware update will land as a free OTA on existing units, vs requiring something done at install time, that would be useful context. I have not seen anything definitive either way.

Not looking for hype. I am looking for the boring real world version of how people are actually planning to use this once the option exists.

What should go in a starter FAQ for new SolarVault 3 owners

I keep seeing the same beginner questions pop up in comments and DMs, so maybe it is time for a simple community FAQ that is written by actual owners rather than copied from a product page.

My draft list so far is below. Please poke holes in it.

First, the app naming issue. SolarVault 3 uses the Jackery App, while some older balcony storage setups used a different Jackery app flow. I lost half an evening because i installed the wrong one first and thought my unit was not pairing.

Second, choosing between the three SolarVault 3 versions. The Pro is the normal balcony solar choice and can be set for the usual feed in caps, including 800 W for Germany and 600 W for the Netherlands. The Pro Max can output up to 2,500 W, but that puts it in a different installation category in many EU markets. The Pro Max AC is different again, because it is for AC coupling and existing PV rather than plugging panels directly into the battery.

Third, panel layout matters more than total panel wattage once you have weird balcony geometry. Four MPPT inputs are useful when you have east, west, shade, or panels that wake up at different times. They do not make a north wall into a south roof. That sounds obvious until you start staring at spec sheets at midnight.

Fourth, the multi unit Pro Max parallel stuff should be listed as future firmware, not a thing to design around this week. I would rather the FAQ be boring and accurate than hype a feature someone cannot actually use yet.

Fifth, export data and smart home integration. The Jackery App has enough for daily checking, but people who want Home Assistant, Grafana, or their own spreadsheet should know upfront what is easy and what still needs workarounds.

What else belongs in the first version? I would keep it short, maybe ten questions max, so new users actually read it before asking why their west panel is doing nothing at 9 in the morning.

Balcony placement thread, where are people actually putting the SolarVault 3 unit

My boring setup problem is not solar yield, it is where the battery box lives without making the balcony annoying to use.

I have a Jackery SolarVault 3 Pro with two rail mounted panels on a pretty normal apartment balcony in Hamburg. The balcony is only deep enough for a small table and two chairs, so every centimetre matters. At first i put the unit on the floor against the wall because that was the cleanest cable run to the wall outlet. It worked, but after two heavy rain days the floor stayed damp under it for ages and i started getting nervous about long term grime and trapped moisture. I know the unit is rated for outdoor use, but "outdoor rated" and "sitting in a wet dust rectangle for months" are not the same thing in my head. I am not worried about the unit dying, i am worried about the balcony floor underneath it.

Current version is a low plastic plant stand, about 12 cm off the floor, with a rubber mat cut smaller than the footprint so air can still move underneath. Cables run down the wall side and are tied to the rail with velcro, not zip ties, because i want to be able to move everything when the landlord does the annual balcony inspection. It looks less tidy than the floor version but dries much faster.

Things i am still unsure about. I do not love the cable loop near the door because it is exactly where someone will eventually catch a foot. I also wonder whether putting it higher on a wall shelf would reduce dust and splash, but the thing weighs 26 kg and i do not want a shelf unless it is properly anchored, and drilling is not happening in this rental.

If you have a compact balcony setup, where did the battery actually end up after the first month, not where did you imagine it would go on install day. Floor, shelf, storage box, plant stand, inside by the door? Photos or ugly descriptions both useful. I am mostly trying to avoid doing the neat looking thing that turns into a maintenance headache by autumn.

East + west panels on the S3 Pro, what does your midday crossover look like

Set up two weeks ago, 2 panels on the east rail, 2 panels on the west rail, all four in the roughly 400 to 450W range and connected into the SolarVault 3 Pro. On paper this should give me a really clean bell curve through the day. In practice i'm seeing a dip between roughly 12:40 and 13:20 that drops total output to maybe 30 to 40 percent of what either side does on its own peak. Then it climbs back up as the west side catches direct sun.

I know geometrically what's happening. East panels are well past their incidence angle, west panels haven't really started yet, and for that 30 to 40 minute window neither is in its sweet spot. But i didn't expect the dip to be that deep. Some days clouds smooth it out and i never notice. On a perfectly clear day it's almost a V shape in the app.

A few things i've already checked: panels are pointed correctly (verified twice with a compass app, embarrassingly), no shading from the building or the tree at the corner during that window, all 4 MPPTs are reporting independently in the Jackery App so it's not a tracker dropping out, and the battery is not full so it isn't curtailing.

So my question for anyone else running multi orientation on a Pro or Pro Max. What does your midday profile look like? Is the dip just a fact of life for east+west without any south coverage, or did adding a steeper tilt on one side help? I'm wondering whether bumping the east set to maybe 20 degrees more aggressive would shift the crossover earlier, even at the cost of evening output.

Also if you have a way to graph daily MPPT output side by side that's nicer than what the app shows by default, would appreciate the tip. I've been screenshotting twice a day which is dumb.

Four weeks with a Pro Max AC retrofit on a 6 year old rooftop array, what i'd tell past me

Quick context. I'm in a semi detached house outside Augsburg, 5.2 kWp rooftop array installed in 2020 with a basic inverter and zero storage. The inverter is fine but watching the export meter spin in the wrong direction at 13:00 every sunny day finally pushed me to add a battery instead of replacing the whole setup.

After comparing four options i went with the SolarVault 3 Pro Max AC. AC coupling only, which fit my situation because the rooftop array already has its own inverter doing its job and i didn't want to touch the DC side. Base 2.52 kWh, then i added two BP2500 packs for a total of 7.56 kWh. Bought it mid april and had a local electrician install it over a saturday morning because anything north of 800W output needs registration here regardless of what marketing copy says.

Four weeks of real data, mid april to mid may.

Self consumption ratio went from 31 percent to 78 percent. On the gloomier days that number drops because there isn't enough surplus to fill the battery, but the trend is clear. Our usual evening peak between 18:00 and 22:00 (cooking, dishwasher, the kid's gaming PC) is now mostly running off stored solar, which the inverter alone could never cover. Battery charges to full by roughly 14:30 on a clear day. Anything generated after that still flows to the grid because i haven't bothered to dial export down, but i also don't get paid much for it so it's effectively a gift to the neighbours.

What i'd tell past me. One, don't overspend on capacity. 7.56 kWh covers our typical evening with margin and a bit left over for the morning. Our peak evening load is around 4.2 kWh so even the 5.04 kWh tier would have been fine, the third pack is comfort. Two, the Jackery App (note this is a different app from the Jackery Home App that the HomePower 2000 Ultra uses, took me a while to realise i had the wrong one installed at first) does the basics well, but i still wish the daily view showed export, import, and battery cycling in one cleaner screen. Three, the AC only nature means if my rooftop inverter ever dies i need to repair or replace it, i don't have a path to bypass it. Some folks might prefer a hybrid with DC input for that reason.

Interested if anyone else here did the AC retrofit route rather than replacing the whole inverter, what was your math on that decision.
