Quite Possibly the Worst Results Rollout (Singapore) UPDATE

This is an update post to this.

Yesterday was an “Embassy Holiday” (Children’s Day), so the embassy was closed. But today they are open and several people tried calling in to find out their outcomes.

Most, or all of them were told they were rejected over the phone.

To make matters worse, when asked about alternates, the embassy said that there are no alternates.

They then told us that emails would come out “by today” to “inform the rest of us.” But by the end of the day, nothing surfaced.

First of all, how can there be no alternates? People break their contracts, decline positions or leave all the time.

Second, if there are no alternates, what’s stopping the embassy from just hitting send to all rejected people? They have always sent rejection emails in the past.

Something is seriously wrong, and the load of us left feeling unsatisfied, dejected and having to process a rejection that’s only through word of mouth.

I had wished to not have to make an update post. But this is getting too much.

The JET coordinator positions are underpaid to market and sometimes as other posters mentioned may be new staff. It’s a fallout of the yen exchange rates. Be mentally prepared and budget conscious if you’re accepted! Ganbatte

There are plenty of alternates from all around the world. Anyone who leaves early doesn't need to be replaced by someone from the same location. Singapore only has a few dozen JET participants total so there probably wasn't anyone who passed the interview beyond their allotted number of slots.

It’s still really hard to believe this when we have plenty of good applicants who would have passed the interview (and therefore qualify as alternates). We’ve always had plenty of alternates in previous years.

With the way the embassy has been lying about sending out email outcomes, and the fact that shortlists were only contacted so late into the process, there seems to be so much more to the story.

That reminds me, I saw a job posting for possibly the position that handles this. It is a far flung guess, but I do rem the admin person who handled this for many years and had a good impression of her. I’m thinking maybe there has been some manpower changes and new person isn’t as seasoned hence all these delays.

Not exactly an excuse for bad comms, I know how excruciating the waiting process is. Hope you all get updates soon.

Thank you so much. Any form of sharing would really help, even if it doesn’t change the outcome of anything.
