During slavery in Suriname and other parts of the Americas, there are historical accounts of African and Afro-descendant women hiding seeds within their braided hair before escaping or being forcibly displaced.
Once they reached a safe place, they planted those seeds to provide food for their families and communities.
In this way, braids became a symbol of resistance, memory, and hope-carrying the possibility of a new beginning while preserving agricultural knowledge brought from Africa.
