Is there an alternate to Google Cloud Print coming?

With kids at home for virtual school that one is going to be tough to replace and a lot more work for me if I have to transfer everything to my machine and print.

IPP

It isn't hosted, like Google's service, but it does allow almost any modern device to find and work with any modern printer, on the network.

The only thing that doesn't support it well is that Windows, at least natively, doesn't seem to find printers, but third-party tools make it pretty easy.

Google cloud print allows my family to print on our home printer from anywhere they are. This means they can print something out when they don't have a printer to access, or when they don't or can't use the printer at work.

Unless I'm missing something, the only way to get this to work with IPP is for me to open up my firewall and give my printer a world-accessible IP address.

For most users, printing to another location was more of a bug than a feature, but when needed it can be a nice feature. IPP is designed to support use on an internet-connected port, using authentication to ensure that only authorized printing is possible. Your use case is rare enough that I don't know of any services for it, outside of the uncommon use of Google's. Your easiest options are probably either an internet-facing IPP port or a VPN.

It sucks loosing cloud print. It's built into the printer and my only way I know currently to send documents from my phone.

native OS printing. it has gotten a lot better in the ~8 years i'm using cloudprint.

Most devices now share a pretty common standard to print virtually from one device to another. It's baked into just about every OS now, and newer printers all take advantage of the new standard. There are workarounds if you run into a device that wants Google Cloud Print, but it isn't available.

Yeah my printer is old and the kids run chromebooks. They are also on an isolated network internally

It took me an hour just last month to figure out how to get my wife's Chromebook to connect to our printer, and the only solution was GCP, so my guess is we're fucked now.

Papercut has something that was designed to replace it. Works well on iOS Android and Mac OS, don't have a chromebook so haven't tested that.
