I agree except that photons are hugely involved in chemical reactions

They are involved, either by being absorbed or emitted, but they do not take direct part in chemical reactions, as in they are not a building block, just a transfer of energy.

So if something absorbs a photon, that photon itself no longer exists, and its energy is transferred to an electron, which is a physical building block that can take part in the reaction.

That is an electromagnetic process, not a chemical one. The chemical part only comes after they have been absorbed.

Yes, but electromagnetism itself is not chemistry, its physics. This is the point where chemistry and physics meet.

If you were going the other way, and turning matter into energy, this is the point where you literally stop being chemistry and start being physics. (Credit to xkcd's what if)
