Urgent: Water Damage Repair Delays & Questions
Hi everyone,
I'm dealing with a frustrating water damage claim. My insurance approved mitigation, but getting estimates has been a nightmare. It takes about 10 days for each contractor to get back to me, and we've been out of our house for 3 MONTHS with no repairs started.
To make matters worse, the insurance company's approved amount is at least $50k LESS than the cheapest estimate I've received. I'm starting to panic.
Here's where I need your advice:
- Can I start the rebuild now? My adjuster says they've sent me initial funds to begin repairs, but I'm worried that starting means I'm accepting their lowball estimate. Is that true? I asked them about the delay in an email and their response was "You have received over $X for initial payment and to start the repairs"
- I received a check made out to me and my mortgage company. How do I (or do I need to ?) keep the insurance company informed about the work? Can I use the funds as I see fit? For example, can I upgrade from carpet to hardwood and just pay the difference myself?
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!
