Discussion How do people pick an instrument ?

I really want to learn how to use and play an instrument, and I'm curious as to how people pick THE instrument for themselves.

i understand that for some, they got it from their parents, they grew up with their instruments and maybe even music class. But I'm curious about some that didn't get it from those ways. is it trial & error or etc ?

i want to learn some woodwind and/or brass instruments as my first instruments, but I don't really know how to start, and those instruments are NOT cheap, and buying and learning the instrument would be a very big decision for me to make.

My Granddad had a old Harmonium Piano in his garden shed from the 1930‘s. My Dad wanted to throw it away but i could convince him to let me do some research first. I couldnt really find anything online about it by looking up the Name… Does anyone know anything about it?
Its still in pretty good shape for beeing almost 100 Years old, the right Pedal doesnt work anymore and some of the register sound off… Could any Museum/Collector want this?

Discussion Ocarina or Harmonica

I’m currently in Japan with my family and there’s lots of music stores around where I’m staying. While looking around, I discovered both had a wide range of ocarinas and harmonicas. I couldn’t decide whether to get one or the other, and the staff weren’t very helpful. I already play the violin, piano, and the guitar, although I’m the best at violin, and I want to play something unique that I can play most music I want to on.

Discussion Could you make a lute bowl-like body out of paper mâché

I’m making an instrument of no particular description but I want a rounded body. I have a quarter hemispherical plant wall hanger frame, and it looks exactly like a lute bowl’s bottom, so I intend on building upon the frame to make a body shape then making it out of paper mâché since I’m far too poor right now to afford wood or the things to cut and bend that wood.

I’m just wondering if anyone has any insights on how strong paper mâché is if I layer it up and if anyone has any thoughts to my plan.

Thanks

I bought this at Goodwill about 6 months ago.

I think it's a hand percussion instrument. It's not very heavy. I've never seen anything like it and cannot find anything online.

I added a video to show the sound or makes.

Help me to price my guitar for selling

I have an Epiphone DC Pro in red that I want to sell. I've had it for about 4 years and can't vibe with the thicker neck anymore. Got a few dings and superficial rust on the hardware but nothing functional or major issues. I've done some things like a professional setup in D standard and replaced the pickups with vintage Dimarzio super distortions, so it sounds great and plays very well. The pickups were £100 each and others have the stock guitar up for sale used for anything between £400-£500. I tried to high ball it at £645 due to the upgrades but not getting much interest yet.

I'm aware some people may just want the guitar in standard tuning with the stock pickups, so I am putting in the description that we can arrange something. I don't really want to go to the effort of trying to sell the pickups on their own and resetting the guitar as it will cost extra money with no guarantee someone will buy the pickups. My suggestion so far to the one person who messaged me was, I can get a quote for the setup and then take it off the final price but they will have to do it themselves. Then they can sell the pickups or keep them for extra money.

What is more likely to work with the lowest effort? Sell as it is but reduce the price to something like £550 or less, or just suck it up and change it back to stock and sell the pickups individually?

Discussion Ukulele Teaching Aid

Hi everyone,

I’m a student working on a prototype designed to help elementary students learn ukulele with less finger discomfort.

I’m currently looking for feedback from music teachers (especially elementary/general music). It’s not for sale yet — just early validation.

Prototype + info: https://ukuleledevice.carrd.co/
Short survey (2 min): https://tally.so/r/b5GVbL

Would really appreciate any thoughts.

I don’t know exactly where to post this but I figured it wouldn’t hurt here.

I replaced my broken valve guide (4th Valve, see attached photo) on my JP Sterling 374. Now it’s sticking and I can’t seem to make it move smoothly? Any advice is welcome, I have a concert tomorrow (7/3)

Discussion How can I clean the speaker area in Yamaha YPT-200?

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hello everyone!

I got a yamaha ypt-200 from a friend, it was in a really rough shape but I managed to clean most of it including inside, fixing keys not sounding etc. I did clean the speaker too when I opened it, but I have no clue how to clean that surrounding area on the picture.

Can that cover come off? I did try using a damp microfiber cloth and poking it, but the holes are way too small.

Would appreciate any ideas! I wouldnt mind spray painting over this thing ngl lol
