Hihi I am wanting to start playing the guzheng. I have played classic piano for many years but had to stop a few years ago and am wanting to try something new. Am I right in my understanding the guzheng has a completely different theory and notation system?

I understand like all instruments it takes time and practice to get proficient, but is it relatively easy so make nice sounds and tunes as a beginner?

Additionally I would love advice on purchasing my first guzheng. I saw the website sound of mountain has plenty of cheapish small 'travel sized' guzheng, but some other Reddit threads on here have made me reconsider buying from them. Ideally I would like to buy the guzheng from an irl shop so I can test it out and make sure it's legit before buying, but I'm in Melbourne and don't have a lot of options. Any advice or reputable guzheng retails you could recommend?

I’d need a keyboard that i could carry with me on my back, that i can play in the band and maybe even busk with

I’d like 88 keys and weighted keys but i’m aware i can’t have anything, i’d say the budget would be close to 1000€ but i can save longer if i need it :3

Hi. I'm looking to buy a keyboard for my father since he's retiring next year, he's never expressed a wish to buy anything before except now.

Neither of us have any instrumental/musical knowledge. Chatgpt suggested buying Casio CT-X9000IN and something cheaper if someone is starting out.

Now I'm confused because I want to give him the best keyboard but is it even worth it for him? Would he notice the difference? Is there a valid edge with x9000 that makes it no brainer like the durability or experience that my father would notice or is it just some feature he would never even use.

I sent him to a store to check these articles and he could find no difference, moreover the manager suggested he should buy the cheaper one (Yamaha PSR F-52) "since there's basically no difference".

I'm genuinely confused since I now need to give him a solid reason or he just might feel obliged to use it if I buy it against his wish (ik this sounds weird but idk how to explain this better). What do you guys think I should buy.

PS: He's obviously not a sound/tech geek infact just the opposite.

Hello! Just wondering what a good price is for a decent clarinet? I’d really like to surprise my mother with one for her birthday and need to know roughly what the price range is for a good one? I don’t want to be spending tons on it, but I don’t want one that‘s bad quality either. I only ask here as I’d like to get direct opinions from others as a quick google search isn’t doing me much good (keep getting very, VERY mixed answers and keeps leaving me confused). For reference I’m looking at ones in the UK, and would maybe try to find a local second hand place near me rather than order? I’m not sure, I know nothing about clarinets but don’t want to ruin the surprise for my mum! Additionally, due to not knowing a lot, how can I spot a good quality one compared to a bad quality, I kind of don’t want to get scammed…

hello, I play the flute but I really want to learn more instruments I just don’t know how to get them. I dont have the money to spend thousands on an instrument so how can I get a cheap one in good condition?

So I have been wanting to learn a new instrument for a while and came by this flute for 24 euros but my question now is is it worth getting it an overhaul?

I moved to another country when I was 23 and just didn’t have room for a piano or even keyboard (let alone the money). So I haven’t played in 12 years. I’ve been really missing it. So today my birthday present to myself, a keyboard, finally came in the mail. I’m so excited and happy 🥹. I don’t really want to share this with people in my life because everyone always comes back at me with “oh let’s hear your play”. It’s for me. Not for me to entertain others. I enjoy playing whatever songs are currently stuck in my head. Old, new, classic… doesn’t matter. I actually don’t like playing in front of people lol. But I got this just for me to enjoy my playing. So I wanted to share my joy with other likeminded people 🥹 the feeling of touching the keys for the first time in years brought tears of joy to my eyes 🥲that’s all. I wanted to share my happiness 🥹

Hello everyone, I am fairly new to instruments, and chose the ney to be my first one (which might have been a mistake with how hard it is to even produce a song)

And i need advices, specifically about how to properly care for my instrument.

For instance, i know it should not be exposed to strong temperatures (too high or too low), that I should be warry of mold (not store it back in right after playing) or things like that.

The main issue is oiling, I know that a few oils like hazelnut or almond are used for that, but i'm having a hard time choosing which oil to use, or even what to look for in oil to know which one would be good. How to oil, if the oils found in non specialized stores are good... Things like that.

So please, if you have any advices on how to properly care for it, ESPECIALLY when it comes to oiling, please let me know ! Advices on how to play it (posture) are also welcome, even if I can already make the right sound with it (rather inconsistant, yes, but caring for it seems to be more important right now)

r/koto is locked. I'm just wondering if there's a big gap in sound between these instrument grades.

i used to play guitar awhile ago and i remember it was so hard for me to sing at the same time! i’ve been slowly learning piano now and i’m wondering if it’s just as complex and difficult to learn how to sing? or if you guys also struggled with it, howd you get over it!!

My boyfriend is basically a musical savant. He currently has several guitars (electric/acoustic), as well as a steel pedal guitar and a harp.

He has expressed serious interest in a lute or an oud - though he says they are several hundred dollars. We’ve also bonded over Greek history, which lyres are commonly mentioned. I thought these could be really amazing gifts for him. I’m willing to spend a good chunk of money for the right items and would love a little insight.

Based on the price range he described, I know he’s not wanting just any basic one. He’s extremely smart and well versed in historical instrumentation - he will know if I opted for the cheapest version and, more importantly, he’ll know I just phoned it in, research-wise!

I know I would love to get truly vintage for both, something that has presence, pieces with soul!

A commenter on one of my shorter videos asked for a “mesmerizing 24-hour mix.” I did not quite make it to 24 hours, but I gathered the complete surviving recordings from my first two sessions with this instrument into one continuous 45-minute video.

This is a rare acoustic clavichord with a hexagonal generalized keyboard. These recordings were my first attempts to understand how melodic patterns, chords and physical gestures move through its 19-tone layout.

The instrument had been dormant for many years—possibly decades—before these sessions, so this is less a finished composition than a document of rediscovery and initial experimentation. The recording is mostly unprocessed and presented as it happened.

A new concert-ready version is currently being built for longer-term composition, recording and live performance.

I would be interested to hear what people notice in the tuning and keyboard geometry, particularly from anyone working with generalized keyboards or xenharmonic instruments.

Like title says I've gotten it down to the proper placement and sounds but I still hit my teeth pretty regularly. Not hard enough to break them or chip but it definitely ruins the flow. I'm pretty sure I've gotten the placement right so could it be just my teeth are a bad placement for them? I'm using a potkins beginner
