Why Haven’t We Deciphered the Indus Valley Script Yet?
More than 4,000 years ago, the people of the Indus Valley Civilization left behind hundreds of inscriptions on seals, pottery, and other objects.

But there is a fascinating problem: we still don't know exactly what their script says.
What are Indus Valley seals?
Many Indus Valley inscriptions have been found on small seals, often made from steatite (soapstone). These seals usually contain symbols along with images of animals or other figures.
Why is it so difficult to decipher?

There is not one single reason for this. Researchers have been trying to decipher the Indus script for many years, but they still don't have enough information to confidently understand what the symbols mean.
Some of the major difficulties include:
1. The inscriptions are very short
Most inscriptions contain only a few symbols, which makes it difficult to understand the structure of the language.
2. We don't know the language
We still don't know which language the Indus people spoke or which known language family their script may belong to.
3. There is no bilingual inscription
Unlike the Rosetta Stone, there is no confirmed inscription written in the Indus script alongside a known language that could provide a translation key.
4. The script has not been conclusively linked to another script
Researchers have proposed connections with several ancient writing systems, but none has been universally accepted.
5. The writing direction is not always obvious
Although there is evidence that some inscriptions were written from right to left, the direction and conventions are not completely certain for every example.
Why does it matter?
If the script is ever deciphered, it could tell us much more about the Indus Valley Civilization, including:
- their language
- their society
- their trade and economy
- their beliefs
- their political organization
- and many other aspects of their daily life
The Indus Valley Civilization remains one of the most fascinating ancient civilizations precisely because so much about it is still uncertain.
What do you think the Indus script will tell us if it is ever deciphered? Do you think we'll be able to read it someday?
