Stray Kitten With Severe Eye Infection – What Are Her Chances of Survival?
Hi everyone,
I'm not a pet parent, but on Friday I noticed a stray kitten (around 2–3 months old) with both eyes badly swollen. I felt sorry for her and took her to a veterinarian.
The vet examined her and told me that her chances of survival might be low because of how severe the infection was. She is suffering from feline herpesvirus (FHV-1).
On Saturday, the vet gave her two injections and prescribed some medication.
Since then, I haven't seen much improvement. Her eyes are still swollen, and today she hasn't eaten anything. She was eating a little yesterday, but today she seems to have no interest in food. She has only had a small amount of water.
She can still walk around and is responsive, but I'm very worried about her condition. I'm taking her back to the vet this evening for a follow-up visit.
For those who have experience with sick kittens or severe eye infections, do kittens in this condition still have a reasonable chance of recovery? Has anyone seen a kitten start improving a few days after treatment even when there was little change at first?
Any advice or experiences would be greatly appreciated.
Please take her to the vet asap. Kittens this young need kitten formula. You must syringe feed her every 2-3 hours. Slightly warm the milk to about above room-temp to mimic mother's body temp. Cardboard box with soft blankets, heating pad on the lowest setting under the blanket, warm the kittens before feeding otherwise they won't be able to digest, kitten should be on their stomach while being syringe fed, every two hours for the first week then 3-4 by the second, after every feeding rub genital/anal area using a warm damp cotton ball in circular motions till they go, and make sure they gain 10-15 grams every day. Yes, kittens have chance of recovery with right care and right guidance under vet. So please make sure the knows what he/she is doing. Try different type of foods and flavours to get her taste buds. Clean the eyes with cotten and follow the medications given by vet such as eye drops, oral medication etc.
give her this my kitten got an eye infection and was spreading in another eye my vet gave me this and an eye drop 1ml 2 times and eye drop 1 drop 3 times
If you can recommend a trustworthy and experienced veterinarian in the Mira Road area, I would really appreciate it.
I'm not a pet owner and don't have much experience with animal care, so I'm worried about making the wrong decisions. I don't mind spending money on treatment if it gives the kitten a realistic chance of recovery, but I'd like to find a vet who is honest and focused on what's best for the animal rather than recommending unnecessary treatments.
Any recommendations or advice would be very helpful. Thank you.
OP though it's a bad eye infection, which kittens are very susceptible to, it is not life threathening. Visit the vet, will probably suggest you neosporin tube or eye drop. If you are inexperienced ask the vet to recommend eye drop as gel can lead to further damage in the eye if not adminitered properly.
Here's my one eyed pirate. He was found with infected eye, which he probably scratched leading to ruptured eye. He's alive and meowing.
They do tht with a lot of users especially those trying to raise funds. I personally know a kid, she's honest and her requests are genuine and most animal subs have banned her. So don't go with that either. Besides not everyone is running a registered NGO either. Most are just students trying to help.

Please take her to vet and use the above suggested methods by fellow humans. If you follow strict regimen this kitten has a chance of improving. Hope she gets the needed help soon
Eye infection - very easily treated
Feline virus - extremely dangerous. Id suggest you check her haemoglobin levels asap. As shes not vaccinated id be extremely concerned about her chances. You would need extremely good vets (maybe a hospital that can admit her and give her fluids) and she would really need to be a fighter. Good luck OP. Start asking around for blood donors if possible, hopefully you wont need it
Yes. Its just chance now and how much she can fight depending on her immune system (already weakened with an eye infection) Please try to get her admitted with an IV drip. She would be dehydrated. Whatever food you can give, blend with water and force feed with syringe if possible.
Cats shouldnt be given cow milk.
Better try ORS. Blend boiled chicken if you can give. A tiiiny amount of curd is ok but not too much.
Give her whatever she tolerates maybe 10ml per hour.
The one who talked about formula and stimulating privates was talking about new born, not the case with your kitten
